In this scouting video I talk about deer scouting in the spring in a typical northern Wisconsin or Minnesota habitat type. Snow is about melted, and there's generally still just enough ice to walk on. In this video I cover a couple specific buck bed locations, transition lines, identifying doe bedding, scrape locations, and finding buck cruising trails.

Glad to see u both breaking down the details. 2 large areas I just finished for hang & hunt 2022. 2 areas 30 miles apart. Deer in 1 area go north & south where the bucks go west & east. In the other area it is the opposite. The buck in 1 area I have December video of I have a lot of wasted video of when some dumbass blew it up b4 he even hunted it. I found in March his travel route. I have 2 setups with a slightly different wind. Hung a woodvine from above with paracord in each spot. My eastern spot got blown up so I have a central & a spot west of that. He will be coming to acorns with each spot. The western spot is interesting. He has a thick brushline to walk through. Then @ the end of it to his other side is a huge oak blowdown. Once he gets to the end of the blowdown on his other side on the edge of a huge cattail swamp the willow brush starts. Now he has a thick woods of brush with cover on the other with a clear path to my ambush 30 yards ahead. The other spot is just another great staging area on the edge of one of the best mast crop areas on the property. Always be ready to be where they hangup as u lose shooting light than hoping they will take 1 of 4 routes through a woods to feed in it. It's important that we all define edge style travel routes as being areas the deer makes them feel safe to travel while having cover but not so much that they have no visibility.

Great video!! When is your favorite time to hunt scrapes?
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 3 ай бұрын
I like them early September close to bedding whenever I happen to stumble upon an active one, also late October is the classic timing. I've also see early December see a minor spike coinciding with 2nd rut if you have that occur in your area.

Thank you for the thoughtful content. I live near some vast swamps and scouted them extensively last winter. However, trying to get into them during the fall was brutal due to the swampy terrain. How do you determine access routes when the frozen terrain conceals all the swampy pitfalls? Thanks again.
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes there's only so much you can do. You know that walking through non-frozen swamp is going to suck no matter what. Some years are better than others. Some swamps have firmer ground, and others are dense muck. I try to connect the dots from high ground to high ground to minimize the tougher walking, but at some point you just gotta use the hip boots and embrace the challenge. Sometimes trekking poles or mudder shoes can help.

Scouting this time of year is awesome. I don't respect all the industry Fraudsters with the giant racks, year after year, it's not reality, but it is entertainment. The most satisfying experience is hunting decent realistic (& of course really big, lol) bucks by grinding it out like this. Anyone can pile up huge trophies when hunting in fantasy land, or off limits to most/gray areas. The best hunters come from areas where the hunting is tough, Michigan, Pennsylvania, the northeast states etc..., not Iowa & Kansas although I myself wouldn't mind only hunting those fantasy areas, lol.

Are you setup in your tree at gray light or do you walk in after day break?
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman 2 жыл бұрын
If it's a rut hunt and I have a tree planned and ready, I'll try to be set up before light. But I also won't sweat it if I get there late. Any time can be a good time in the rut, especially mid day. If it's earlier than the rut and I'm set up near a bedding area I like to get there early afternoon. Or if on a morning hunt super early before light so they aren't too near the bedding when I'm getting set up.

You can see shed bucks and does on cameras this time of year or find out how any other guys shed hunt or scout the area. But for most of my intel I'm not really interested in getting them put there until August. Sometimes I set them up during the season if I scout my way into good sign and have learned a lot with that strategy as well.

great stuff bro I always look for some sort of breakup in the thick transitions, usually that's where the bucks like to bed Also man i really need to start picking trees in post season for my hunts the next season. I've missed a ton of opportunities the last 4-5 years being in the wrong tree . do you mark your trees with tacks or something? or just on spartan forge app?
@DIYSportsman
@DIYSportsman Жыл бұрын
I just mark them on the app. I usually don't like advertising my spots if I can help it. I do often take pictures that I'll attach to the waypoint in Spartan Forge so that I can get a mental refresher of what the tree looks like and how I need to set up in it before heading into the spot.
