Just another thought, making this even more perfect. We live on a very fertile river and I use the sand/loam in my garden. We also have 15 chickens so access to egg shells. This is a match made in heaven. What else can I learn after gardening for 55 years.

River/ creek sand is great as part of your garden soil. Apparently the sand mixed with some screened compost makes perfect potting mix.

A quick pro tip that may add time to grow and harvest schedule, but well worth it. Wait until the greenery above ground has completely died for one full week before harvesting, do not water at all for that week. Why? Potato skins will thicken slightly upon sitting in the soil for that extra week, which adds to the longevity of storage in a cool dry environment. I'm not talking extra days of remaining fresh, but extra months before the tubers need to be cooked before they go bad. A longer term storage becomes more viable.

Daniel, this soil looks like it's a sand type of soil, does that make it easier to grow and harvest than a store bought potting soil mixed with regular ground dirt?
@danielroberts7940
@danielroberts7940 2 жыл бұрын
@@1111blondie Tubers, aka potatoes, are an amazing crop. Sandy soil, potting soil, I've even had them grow in piles of hay with a dirt floor of all the darned things, all equally well. The key is to have it drain very well. If you have a soil that hangs onto moisture, like clay, it will corrupt the potato quicker and you may see some rot. However, a well draining medium is perfect for tubers. Take a 10 gallon bucket, drill four or five quarter inch holes in the bottom, fill it halfway with potting soil and put the potato that is sprouting on top, then finish filling it up to 90% full. Water only once per week and no more, just enough to make a couple of inches of water. Within one and a half to two months, you're ready for harvest, about 1 week after the greenery dies. Remember not to water anymore when the greenery starts to die and all will be well, no rot. It's hard to go wrong with potatoes. :)

I grew a great crop of potatoes by throwing straw down on the ground about a foot deep. I then threw potatoes on the straw in a row. Then threw a couple feet of straw on top of the potatoes. I watered them, and over the appropriate time, harvested a great crop. While the potatoes were developing, it was easy to access the roots and throughout the summer, gleaned baby and small potatoes for dinner. Just pat the straw back in place. So easy, so productive.

Love your videos. My potatoes, spuds, as I call them, sprout in my cupboard lol I throw them into my raised garden and they grow more spuds. If you can get taller containers and plant the spuds deep and then keep the leaves covered with soil more, you will get more spuds. Goes to show we can grow lots in a small area and don't need huge paddocks of land.

Some kinds of potatoes only grow near the surface, other kinds grow downwards. The surface types need space around the plant, the kind that grows deep will do what you said. Sorry I can’t name the different types I am trying to find that out now which is why I watched this video. He still got more than he planted so that’s great!

@@granmabern5283 Determinate potatoes are varieties with tubers that grow in just one layer. This is why the plants do not require mounding of the soil around them. They produce early, in about 70 to 90 days. Indeterminate potatoes, on the other hand, grow in multiple layers, so it is important to mound soil around the plants. This will give you a better yield. Indeterminate potatoes take longer and produce late crops, 110 to 135 days out.

@@andreamortimer2610 Good comment and information. Very helpful. I grew up with parents who were raised on farms, and so I learned how to grow food, including potatoes, as a boy. But I had not yet heard the terms "determinate" and "indeterminate"....learn something new every day as they say. :) We always grew the latter kind I guess because we mounded soil up around plant as the season progressed; my Mom called it "hilling the potatoes". As per your time estimate, our typical growing season was about 4.5 months. Your estimate of 70 to 90 days (2.5 to 3 months) for determinate spuds, leads me to the thought I had as I watched this video...it said "harvest in 1.5 months". That's only 45 days. I'm skeptical that such large potatoes (as some were in this video) can be grown in only 45 days.

Great harvest from such a small space. If I may suggest to leave the potatoes in dark dry & cool storage for a couple of months. Inspect regularly to ensure that they are not spoiling. Then chip and fry them. New potatoes do not make good chips/frys, they tend to be limp and soggy. Wash but don't peel, then srteam the new potatoes for 15/20 minutes over a gentle heat till a fork will penetrate easily. Cover with some butter, beautiful. All the best nutrients are in the skin. I will try your method this year as my space is limited till my garden is back in action. Keep growing

@@azo7578 the goal is to try and get two eyes per piece. The results will be fewer potatoes per plant but bigger potatoes. If you plant a potato whole, you get more potatoes but they have a tendency to be smaller on average. If you have a spud with 6 eyes on it, then getting 3 chunks with 2 eyes is optimal but sometimes not possible depending on their location.
