He said what your skill has to exceed whatever else you bring, so I thought he was going to say Matt’s comedy has to exceed his looks for his career to continue. There's nothing complicated about the Matt Rife "drama". He made an incredibly tame, and honestly...not very original joke about domestic violence. The only people who were complaining were the (relatively large) segment of his fan base who are unfunny women who are just use to seeing his crowd work where he interacts with other women. I'd genuinely love to see the statistic of how many of the women who have gone to his shows, or who follow him on TikTok...have never been to a comedy club before seeing Matt.

Hey. I am a woman. And I found that joke offensive. Because it wasn’t funny. It was unoriginal and not clever. If you’re gonna tell a domestic abuse joke on your Netflix special, it’s gotta be clever. With that being said, Matt is young. His crowd work is great, but he’s still growing into the rest. Writing is hard. Being original and clever takes work. He’ll get there, but he’ll get there a lot easier if he can have a sense of humor about his miscalculations and fumbles. Though, I have great sympathy for him not wanting to be labeled as the fan girl’s hunk comedian.
