My first ever gig I used the first method and there was no booth monitor. I found there was a slight delay between what I was hearing from the room speakers to what I was trying to beat match in my headphones. It was awful and I almost gave up DJ'ing entirely. If it wasn't for the next DJ coming on who suggested using the other method with headphones on and switching between cue and master, I never would have stuck with it. He was such a genuinely nice bloke who didn't judge and I'm secretly eternally grateful to him.

I experienced the same thing very embarrassing and freak if I don’t have a booth speaker…I guess I need to practice more just using headphones and what I’ve learned here…

A video on hearing protection would be great. Not just for the DJ LOL. Going to try your headphone levels tips as I struggle with beat matching unless both tracks have a definite beat.

Best DJ teacher, have so much love for him. Next time I have enough for his courses, I am purchasing them. Which is the recommended first one to go for again? New DJ. Realized the downside of Denon SC Live 4 is that the integrated speaker is really a (poor man's) booth speaker and is directly on me as the DJ (it is cool that it is loud enough for a small BBQ party, and you can feel the low end frequencies travelling through your fingers, but way too loud for the DJ 😂). So when playing solo, I might start just using the headphones without the integrated speakers of the SC Live 4.
@deankayton
@deankayton 4 күн бұрын
Maybe feeling the low end is off putting because I definitely feel it is easier to beat match on the short, high frequencies, as the low frequencies tend to be rumbly and slow (maybe psytrance different?). This video has given me so much food for thought. Hope to solve the problem where I think I aced it Live, then when I listen back to the recording, it is embarrassing 😳

8:54 Thanks a million for explaining this, i never understood why my cued Tunes in my Headphones always sounded louder that my Master at the 12 o'clock position, i never twigged that it was because my Master Channel was set below Neutral gain. Really has always absolutely bugged the absolute shit out of me why it was this way. I even wrote to Pioneer complaining about there dodgy shit and they even said that this is how all there equipment is calibrated never actually explaining why what causes this LOL. Tnanks man :)

Same here, without the angry letters to Pio though, 🤣🤣 I resort to the cue on the live channel and the one I'm bringing in, flicking the switch between them to get the levels, flick on to cue master to hear the room, start the transition and then get my cans around my neck, leaning me head into one of the cups if it's drifting out of time Every day is a school day no matter how long ya been doing this!

Great video. I use the mix knob all the time. Often when I'm playing out I don't have monitor speakers so it has become my best friend. One additional word of warning then using the mix knob - be careful to not grab the headphone level knob by accident and then crank it all the way to the right. I've done it and had to throw my headphone off my head before I knew ears out.

So basically using the method with master button -> the more i turn the upped mixing knob to left the more I can year cue until only cue (having it max on the left side). Then the more master, the more I can hear the output sound( from the speakers). And at 12 oclock i can hear both equally. Plus the level knob let me control the volume on the headphones. Please tell me I understood well :D Thank you for this video!

For preservation of hearing, nothing beats in-ear monitors with triple flange foam tips. You won't have to turn up your IEMs very loud at all to hear them.

And just remember guys, if you want to turn up your headphones more and more, just go the opposite way. If you want to turn up maybe turn them down or let them stay. Your hearing will say thank you 🙏 I’m always having the problem over a night that it’s getting louder and louder, or when i want to mix at home on headphones that I wanna feel the bass and turn them way up. I hope you could understand it 🤘🏽 cheers

Was naturally using the last method as I find it to be the closest to what I normally use on my controller. However, the problem that you mentioned when the master level has a lot of headroom but the inputs are a lot higher it is very hard to mix with the dial. In fact I wold always have my dial near the master and cue was only slightly open. The problem was discovered when I first started to mix in that one bar when master output was at maybe 11-12 o’clock at all times, but the inputs were loud. So I would have to boost the headphones level to hear the master cue, but then as soon as I press the cue on the new track it is blasting into my ears.

Hi Andrew, Nice explanation of using headphones. I'm currently playing a club where the monitor speaker is connected to the main output (due to a technical issue with the mixer) so I have no real control of the volume and find it far too loud so have just bought some cheaper end musician ear plugs. I would like a video on earplugs before I commit to some pricy ones.

Where is the ideal placement for the DJ monitor? I’ve earned a residency, but I’m struggling with my mixes; they are not up to my standards - it’s frustrating and it’s starting to get embarrassing. I’m having difficulty hearing the music clearly (it almost sounds resorted because it’s so loud)and it creates challenges mixing in and out of tracks. Any suggestions?

I would be surprised if you had a say in where they place the booth monitor, but in my experience it's just to the side facing you. Like I said in this video just turn the booth right down so you can hear in your headphones better.
