Hype’s right, he should be credited more for being a founding father of the sound that became jungle / drum and bass. He’s a legend. Loud and to the point and not a show off. Bring back the funk and bass. All the tunes he put out are original sounding and full of flavour and funk. Hype hype hype. Nice one Ron for the interview.

I completely agree. But I would also say if you were a kid who was slightly to young to go to those huge raves (Dreamscape etc) but bought the tape packs. HYPE’s was ALWAYS one of the stand outs. Certainly was with all my mates in 93/94/95 time period

Mate, you had a big influence on a lot of people including myself, a 49 year old producer of old.. Leon cut my dubs at music house, and I gave them out to kenny Ken and Micky Finn who played them on kiss down the Holloway Road. Got a deal with Kickin records and even got interviewed on kiss back in the day.Couldn’t take the knocks like you did but look back happy to be part of the vibe that was created and I worked so hard to be part of. You have been an integral part of the scene and deserve all the respect that you receive. A lot of people come from the same place you do, the reggae vibe that Rodigan served up to us on radio London, the hip hop vibe that was brought to us by the likes of Mike Allen, which seems kind of cheesy looking back 😂 You amalgamated that vibe and made people like us realise that all the music we had listened to in our younger years was a future music genre. One of the mad things I've always thought about d&b is how you can find truly amazing tunes that never became massive, real masterpieces. The fact this interview doesn't have thousands of likes is amazing to me. Not only is Hype about as genuine as they come, but Ron is one of the very few interviewers that can get those sorts of emotions out of his guests, by paying attention and knowing when to be quiet. You know it's connected when you feel the same emotion as when Hype was talking about Leon. This is superb, well done 👍

Saw Hype play in Liverpool 20 years ago and was blown away. Prior to that he was always the first tape you'd draw from the pack. Big up Hype! Still listening after 25 years.

Interesting how he mentions about being booked more up north. I used to notice that he was a firm favorite at the more ravey events like Helter Skelter/Dreamscape, yet he played ghetto compared to the Slipmatts of the world. Great interview

But some 93 and 94 tapes were happier than he's known for, just like you'd hear Slipmatt playing darkside at some events. Even Grooverider would drop a piano tune occasionally.

I really don’t know why Hype hasn’t been credited he’s deserve. He’s put so much into the scene from the beginnings of the Hardcore/ Jungle era. In the 90’s he was on every big rave flyer - Dreamscape, Helter Skelter, World Dance etc

I always wondered why it was hard to see Hype play in the early 90’s. I saw Hype play at Monroes in Southend and he was playing two records of Terminator as we walked in. I can still picture it now.

Tell Hype it was JB- Jason Ball- Back 2 Basics- who was AKA Dred Bass. Asend & Ultravibe made 'What Kind Of World'. From Mel @ SRD. Never seen Hype look so good- loved this- thank you! & sorry I left b4 138 trek came out- I'm dying of shame.

I'll never forget the kindness shown to me by Hype back in the day, he let me cut what are still some of my most prized possessions, his Funkula remix and Godfather remix, I'll never forget the faces on some big faces in Music House. I was nobody, but he gave me his time and advice through many phone calls. A true gent and I will always feel blessed to have been able to scratch the surface and albeit briefly, get a real insight to the real Kevin Ford. Big up yourself as well Ron, your dubs are in the same pile, another true gentleman devoid of ego...

What an interview - salute salute salute. Hype's drum programming on those early Ganja-era tunes is untouchable - as good as anyone ever did. Rinse Out, Roll Da Beats remix and on and on. Killer productions. One thing I love about the scene is its built from the ground up. We dont want or need some BBC documentary about Jungle, we want and and need exactly this. So thank you for it.

Shot In The Dark was one of the first records I bought in period. I always thought that Hype's name and sound worked so well with the art direction of Subbase at the time. Good times!

45 years young now and still listening to the music now. 94 to 98 were the best years for me personally. Only just in 2020 bought my own decks and started collecting vinyl from that era. Never could afford it before. Collection now worth about 2k. Black by SS for me is the finest tune ever done. Got quite a few of Hypes tunes and love them all. Huge legend in the scene and one of my favourite djs along with Randall and Kenny ken. Great interview guys please do more.

Went to a rave at junction 21 in Leicester back in the 90s.On.the way out got a few freebies they were handing out,I got a vinyl of djss black.Still got it over 20 yrs later

One of the best rave DJs ever and if anyone thinks otherwise then they need to go check themselves. Hype could singlehandedly blow off the roof to any rave. He made some the best iconic tunes of the Jungle and DNB era!! Ganja Records was one of my favourite labels in the 90s.

Hype was probably the biggest and first inspiration to me in music, 13 years old listening to his sets on cassette in school After destroying my dads turntable stylus several times trying to scratch like Hype I got my first set of decks and I was hooked, Saw him live countless times and was a regular at the fabric playaz nights in the early 2000s, Before I fell out of love with drum & bass The conversation about Leon at the end was touching, so sad, Absolutely Wicked interview Ron! Hype is a proper straight talker, absolute legend! Big up!!!

DJ Hype set the benchmark many times over the years. He broke boundaries for many yet i believe it was the die-hard fans that always truly understood him. Why? Because musically, there wasn't ever anyone like him as you knew who he was my his music and his set. Regardless of whether people took him differently, being raw and truthful is the best way to be. People are too sensitive to everything and here is a true legend of the game that doesn't get the true status he deserves. He was and still is the DON! He was always about evolution, not revolution and you youngsters (i'm 45) should listen to his music past and present and be prepared to open your mind!

Hype is one of the few DJs who nails it with that talk of 1993. In my experience the terms "hardcore" and "jungle" were fairly interchangeable around that time. In my opinion (rightly or wrongly as it's based on my experience) the start of jungle was one of those Randall Yaman mixes. The music was stripped back to breaks, bassline and maybe a little synth sound and a sample, I still called it "hardcore" but it was the foundations of Jungle. Also props for not slagging off or just totally ignoring hardcore. There often seems to be a reshaping of history, with people calling records like "Far Out" Happy hardcore as if it's the same as F*cking Toy Town. Or claiming that SUAD was jungle or DnB back in 89

Yes 100% agree 👍🏻. It’s funny when you hear the ‘cherry picked’ history of it all elsewhere. I guess everyone has their experience of how it happened. But it was hardcore still until much later. All the same producers and DJs didn’t just switch genres. It just grew and morphed.

Hype’s Wikipedia article even says that £10 to Get In by SUAD and The Bee by The Scientist are “the first jungle tunes to hit big”, laughable. Whilst hardcore and jungle definitely were borderline interchangeable at one point those tunes couldn’t be further from jungle if they tried.

The Hype is real! No bullshit or narcissistic egos here. Hype is a straight shooter and tells it like it is. Probably the reason that the doors didn't open as big for him as they did others back in the day. People don't like to hear the bare truth sometimes when its put on them. I'm 49, and have loved this dude since way back when. This was a fascinating couple of interviews with the man. Didn't know he was so involved with the scientist stuff in those early rave days. You was right about Potential Bad Boy too. He put out some groundbreaking shit with Ibiza Records and like you, was involved in way more great tracks than he was given credit for. Get him on here. It would be good to hear his take on things. It would be good to see a couple of guests on together maybe. Get the right guests on and some of the old stories would be great if you had a few of you there bouncing off each other. You would have a great laugh. Thank you Hype, your music has helped fuck with my head(in a good way) on more than one occasion🤯🤪👍

DJ Hype was always my favorite as his style of mixing and scratching reminded me of my first love, hip hop. Really interesting insight and a great interview. Tunes released on Sub base and the stuff on ganga were bangers. Would love for d&b to go back to it's funky roots, jazz, ragga and hip hip samples. Feels a bit more soulful that the music being made in the modern era. Maybe I am getting old but alot of modern d&b seems to be lacking something IMHO. Either way, salute Dj Hype and True legend in the game 👍

I remember the day I got Still Smokin', I was sixteen that year and it was the sound of my entire summer...and it rolled into the next year as well. The part where Hype is talking about going through his records is why I love my records, why I never sell any of them even if I haven't listened to a certain plate for decades. ....it seems like a lot of dudes got into puppets during the lockdown. Good on anyone who found a fun thing to do during the lockdowns. This world needs more joy.

All I have in this world is my balls and my word, and I don’t break ’em for no one. True playaz anthem, super sharp and peace love and unity were the sound of that era. Really enjoyed this one. Hype, one of a kind talent and pivotal in shaping hardcore/jungle from the beginning. I was playing the Shot in the Dark record earlier today, that record is nearly 30 years old. I've been hitting a real nostalgia tip lately and pulling out the old tunes as I'm not far behind you in age now. What a time that was to be alive. These interviews go deep and have been truly special. I can't explain how much they mean to people like me who grew up through hardcore and then jungle. You were pretty much gods to us back then but we didn't really know the human beings behind the names. Now we're getting to do that. Thanks so much Ron, big love to you and everyone involved with this show.

As others have said hype has been there and stayed at the top for over three decades at least. Can't think of many others who have. I must have about 100 tunes by him from kickin recs to sub base, ganja, tru playaz and even the breaks stuff he did with zinc. Mixes as well, kiss fm, hardcore, ruff stuff, yaman, helter skelter tapes. As important to the scene as anyone. Thanks for the interviews

It is so true what he said about the change of sound and audience coming from people with a background in rock and metal music. It’s one of the reasons so much of the music these days doesn’t resonate with me. Also very interesting how he said he never looked back only forward until lockdown and having the time to reflect and enjoy the old stuff. I think many people did the same, along with a discerning new generation - the jungle revival is back in full force at the moment! Great to see.

I got to see Hype in Detroit years ago at Movement festival, Hart Plaza. Daddy Earl was on the mic. It was one of the greatest sets I have ever witnessed! Look up DJ Hype with Daddy Earl in Detroit! The vibes were thick man!!!! Big up Hype! Big up Ron too. Legends!

Hype always seemed to be in Manchester. Every time I'd head out with the crew we'd roll up at a DnB club and Hype would be there scratching away to some massive big bass Drum and Bass track! Ohh man, those were the days!

I always loved seeing hype live weather in world dance or brunel rooms dreamscape ect ect he brought different mixing styles. If you was in the cue as a punter hype was one of the most talked about djs in a positive way. Big up for good times and s wicked interview 😊

This is a great interview. Hype is the definition of an original. Some really fascinating insight from the 90s, which makes sense hearing it from Hype. I do think what matters is the influence that he had shaping Jungle. I don't think anyone who was in the scene would ever doubt that. Big up Ron each every time.
