DJ Jazzy Jeff reacts to my tape scratching version of his Peter Piper routine

DJ Jazzy Jeff was a special guest at my company's 2022 holiday party, and while he was there, I got a chance to share my own rendition of his famous Peter Piper routine, which I performed on my musical invention, The ScrubBoard. Sharing this with him and seeing his reaction was truly one of the highlights of my life. The only problem was that this all happened over Zoom, because this was during covid, so I didn't actually get to meet him in person. But on the other hand, if it had been in person, I probably wouldn't have gotten the whole thing on video. And -- because he gave me permission -- I am now able to share the video with the world! Enjoy.

Straight outta the 80s! How cool to have DJ Jazzy Jeff not only critique your video and methods, but praise them too! Having someone of his status tell you how you understand the ethos, and bring it to life in an entirely new way, while retaining the essence of "old skool" scratching, is awesome! Bravo!

DAMMMMNNNN...I've never seen DJ Jazzy react like that to another DJ's work. He was truly in awe of your work, the scratchin & your instrument. How in the world did you ever think to translate scratching into linear 2 in. tape?

Getting that co-sign from Jazzy Jeff is like getting Steph Curry telling you that you have a nice shot, or Peyton Manning telling you "Nice Throw". That is the ultimate compliment.

I found this guy a long time ago. I was amazed that he had the enthusiasm to take the time and build this thing and keep at it. He could have just went out and bought some tables. He has like 3 or 4 different prototypes. It's nuts. When I first started scratching I would steal the turntable from my parents old console stereo and had to put penny's on the needle head just so it wouldn't skip. If your into people being creative look on you tube fir a guy from Arizona scratches on a boombox cassette. He uses 2 of them to mix and scratch. Sounds kinda good too. Dj craze found him and was mind blown. How the hell does he keep the cue? He even does back and forth. Always loved the scratch sound.

It's like watching someone play a homemade trumpet, but it sounds exactly like a guitar solo. You are a genius for being able to take resulting sounds and patterns from one form, and use an entirely different form to reproduce them, and the experience of producing them as an artist. It's like reinventing the paint brush to look like a tomato, but yet it works just as well as the paint brush. In fact, it works better...you don't have to destroy vinyl. You can still get the analog feel for the turntables, as the DJ, not removed from it by technological advances of the last 2 decades...a real tactile control, much like an old muscle car, without the safety of traction control and anti-lock brakes; you're in control, for better or worse. And still getting to experience this active and hands-on way to interact with your instrument, without having to sacrifice vinyl...you could really be onto something. I'm more than impressed. Oh, and you could scratch like a mofo too? Showoff...lol

This was super cool to see on so many levels. You being able to show such a sick homage to someone else’s work, in a unique manner that you invented, for them to witness and genuinely have that kind of reaction…that’s some special stuff right there. Kudos on absolutely everything that went into this and I’m so happy you got to have such a special moment to remember. Thank you for sharing and to Jazzy Jeff for giving permission to do so. Jeff is dope AF. He really seems to embrace technology. Over the holidays I watched his live streams like crazy and Nu-Mark challenged him to an all vinyl set. It was enjoyable but you could tell he was a little out of his comfort zone. I haven't peeped his rig close enough to see if he uses them but you don't even need needles when scratching vinyl in Serrato now. Keep doing what you're doing. Try not to get too lost in perfecting all the super subtle characteristics. Jeff was impressed enough with the older version without the weighted playheads.
