I programmed the hi-hat on this tune...Funny story: the engineer on this is my good friend and brother Mike Neal (a.k.a. Funky Ned, bass player and founding member of Rare Essence). He used to work out of two spots...one was his home studio in the basement of his crib in Soufeast DC, and the other was 3 min away near the Eastover Shopping Centre off of South Capitol St. in Oxon Hill, MD - those of you who know KNOW!! Anyway, I used to stay just up the way some at Top Of The Hill Apts., right across from Crystal Skate (in Temple Hills), so it was nothing for me to drive 7min or so to come hang at the studio and check up on my boy...I used to do that schitt almost every day back then. In those days I smoked much weed and I would just pop through, hang, chill and spark up...pretty much by myself cuz Ned never smoked a day in his life. This one evening I fell through and Ned was working with Kool (DJ Kool), and of course, they were working on this song. They had it poppin' and everything was pretty much in place, except the hi-hat part was just straight 8th's (even 8th notes) and it just had no vibe!! After giving it the benefit of the doubt for about 10 min I realized it was becoming more and more annoying, and painfully obvious that something else should be happening, so I said, "Yo...I love the beat but that hi-hat part is kinda boring!"...They looked at each other and then back at me and said, "What did you have in mind?" I replied, "I dunno, but you should try something kinda swingin' and syncopated; like something Juju might play." They made room near the SP12 - I'm pretty sure that's what they were using cuz Ned was faithful to that joint back in the day (lol) - and I started to play around with it. About 30sec later had this part down!! We recorded it into the SP12 and it became part of the beat right away. I went back to hittin' my weed in peace and they were happy that the track seemed to come alive another notch. That's it, no big fanfare, just two cats that were open enough to hear without ego and were willing to lend their ear to a third one (me), who had fresh ears coming into the vibe. I never got paid nor did I expect to...after all it was a very small thing, even though it made a sizable difference. I mean, it literally took under a minute or so from the time I said something 'til the time that the hi-hat part (as we hear it today) became an integral part of the beat. I just dig this little detail about my life in music, and this is the first time I ever say something about it in public...some 32 years later. In case you're wondering about Ned's bass playing...I pulled him into Maxwell's first record and that's us playing together on "Sumthin' Sumthin'"; he also played on "Dance Wit' Me". Later we also played on "Lifetime", "This Woman's Work" and other joints. The end. Well...nah....we're still here!! Long live Go-Go music and DC cats. Love

I lived in Maryland when this came out, on the weekends we would be Dancing at The Dome in Washington D.C. I'm just remembering how much Go-Go music was killing it back then with. Guys would be beating on buckets on the street corners jammin out. Chuck Brown E.U. = Experience Unlimited.. Da Butt Trouble funk DJ Kool Rare Essence Junkyard band Northeast groovers If you weren't from the East coast you wouldn't really know what Go-Go music was. But man I always would say, it was audience participation music. You couldn't help yourself but have a good time when Go-Go music started playing..

This is the absolute truth. Go-Go is such an East Coast thing

Go-go was more of a DC thing. Some of these made it out of DC to the rest of us, but go-go wasn't huge let's say the rest of the se.
