With the impending release of "The Elmatic Instrumentals," DJ Premier took some time to check out the new interpretations of some of his classic productions, as covered by Detroit band Will Sessions. After explaining the background behind the beat for "Memory Lane," he's predictably impressed with the new instrumental versions for "Represent" and "Detroit State of Mind."
"The Elmatic Instrumentals" will be released worldwide on September 27 on CD, 180g Vinyl, and digital formats.

The Will Sessions instrumentals are as close as a covers album can come to being a classic. The instrumentals without Elzhi's vocals is just brilliant craftsmanship!!

Mannnnn. Nothing could beat NY State of Mind. It's incredible, but damn did Detroit State of Mind come close. Elmatic was such a good album. Brave to cover one of the best albums ever, it's big shoes to fill and he did it well.

That's not what he was trying to do. He just wanted to point out where the intro to Represent was, so Premo would catch the intro before the actual track.

I think Elzhi said in an interview that someone else had said Nas heard it, and all he said was something along the lines of "it was dope/good." But very few words.

@Soo35cool I get what your saying, but I see Elzhi's "Ellmatic" as a tribute to "Illmatic." No track on that album does Elzhi out right steal from Nas. It feels like throughout the whole thing he's adding on to Illmatic, not stealing from it. He's putting his own perspective on on it.

Ppremo does not kill Pete Rock, in any sense of the word, but Pete does not kill rza, neither can he out do showbiz.....it's like cats talk about Dr.Dre and forgett Dj Quik, and how consisitent he's been close to 20 years now....they are all sick, Premo is the greatest coz he's an erratic genius, everthing Pete, or Dre does is done puposefully and thoughtfully, Premo has beats that are not very good, but still have that hypnotic feel to them, traces of genius, no one else has this touch. Why does Nas refuse Preem another classic album? Premo seems so freakin' proud of Illmatic and keeps retelling the story about the chemistry there was among the producers and Nas. He just won't stop talking about it like was it his only child. He burns so much to do another album with Nas and it hurts my hiphop soul to see such a humble legend being denied it time after time. Nas quit the bitchin' and quit your in-house producers and get down with Preem, Pete Rock and Large Prof. One last time.

Why is everyone always talking about wayne or making comparisons between artist who have nothing to do with the video...The only comparison here should be Will Session version versus Premier's original. My thoughts are Will Sessions perfected something that was already genius, that band should cover alot more classics. Them and Elzhi should just form a tributegroup or some shit cause Elmatic is NUTS.
