I’ve been djing for 48yrs and my go to speakers have always been Mackie brand. I disagree with the entry level Dj’s statements I hear but other than that good video. I’m still using Thump 15A’s with no issues and they sound great. Never had any complaints from crowds (yet)

Just FYI, Music Ducking mode actually does something different. So if you have a mic plugged into channel one and music playing in channel two if you would go to speak the music will automatically turn down when you are speaking and turn back up when you are done. So it ducks the music when you are speaking. This is a common technique in audio engineering. I'm an audio engineer for a living. We just do it by hand with a fader. Sometimes we sidechain a compressor or use automation too. There are also plugins that do it too. Anyway, just thought it was worth mentioning!

Absolutely meaningless...speakers are measured one meter on axis to the speaker and speaker grille removed ...not waved about willy nilley and shoved into the horn ,but what is surprising though was how low the readings were when you were right on top of it , so it's not going to get anywhere near 128 dB at 1 meter

Can you compare JBL partybox 1000 with any of the other JBL setups you have ? Im a mobile Dj hosting small outdoor partys, and looking for a setup for 50-100 people. I use i Pioneer XDJ-XZ controller and mostly play Techno and Psy so you know it.

@@theaverageguy3884 Nice controller you have there! I do not personally have any experience with the partybox. I do believe I know someone who has one though. I started with 12" EON tops. I have now added 2 18" PRX XLF subs, 2 12" PRX tops, and 2 15" PRX subs. I may be able to compare smaller setup with one and then two 15" subs to the party box for you. I'll let you know if I get the chance. It's great having the 15" PRX subs for most events. So much easier to move around and they are plenty. I use all four subs for school dances. Hello Rick, I picked up two of these and noticed that the orientation of the power switch and the socket where you plug in the power cord is different on mine. Anyway, the main reason I'm reaching out is because when using my iPod Touch to Bluetooth connect to the Thump215XT, the OL or clipping light stays on way more often even though the volume on the iPod is turned all the way down. I noticed you were using a cellphone to play the music at a high volume. Did you happen to notice if the clipping light was at full brightness on your speakers during your review or do I have a setting incorrectly?

#squad. great stuff I think the "standard" for measuring db is at 1 meter, Double the power is 3 db. Due to distance square rule double the distance, half the distance. So at 1 meter you get a reading, at 2 meters, the reading will be down 3 db. At 4 meters you will be down another 3 db ( 6 db, a quarter of the power ). It takes a long way to kill the sound but it drops off quick. As for quality of sound, ( not how good the speakers are ), just making up numbers, using a 1000w system to push 105w sounds a lot better then trying to use a 100w system to get that same 105w. ( I have heard that too many times )
@daviddescheneaux9194
@daviddescheneaux9194 Жыл бұрын
It's actually more like 6db per doubling of distance for a point source speaker, and 3db per doubling of distance is how a line array properly deployed will perform.

Yes, dB SPL should be measured at 1m. That's a standard in the industry and Rick should know this. He's measuring at 8 feet and then at 0 feet, in a garage..😏 Also, dry specs like Watts RMS and dB SPL still don't give a good idea about what a speaker sounds like IRL. Because speakers can have different efficiency and dB SPL can be a number that is measured with a screeming tweeter while the bass is being reduced, compressed, etc. You would have to compare speakers at their maximum volume while they're still not distorting, compressing, etc, to judge their real world soundquality.

My all time favorite jazz bassist uses a nice mic into a nice preamp into a Mackie powered speaker instead of a bass amp. Barely anyone else does this, so I can’t find reviews for this type of use. Any idea how the low end would hold up to a 300-500 watt bass rig? Intended for stage volume with drums, or small venue concerts. The SRM version is much too heavy to consider, btw.

I direct children's musicals. I currently use an older set of Thump 15" speakers but need to buy new ones. I'm looking at the 212XT and the 215XT for our performances in the school gym/multi-purpose room. Our audiences are usually about 150 parents. Over the years, I've noticed that I need to bump the highs in particular to hear children speaking their lines. I was set on the 215's, but heard on another channel that the 212 is clearer for voice. Would you recommend the Mackies for my purpose, and would the 215's be better?
@DJRickWeb
@DJRickWeb Ай бұрын
Well overall the clarity of the vocals comes down to the tweeters in the mackies and they are not the highest of quality. If you spent a little more and upgraded to a higher end speaker like qsc k12 or rcf art series you would see a noticable difference in vocal clarity. But on the topic of 12 vs 15. The 12s will give better mid range response which can help with vocals but overall the tweeters are the main factor in clarity

@@DJRickWeb quick story, I was at six flags amusement park in New Jersey and thru out the park music is being played while you wait to get on the rides. I was relaxing listening to the music; and I said to myself… “self” the music was sounding so good and checked the speakers 🔊 they were JBL after that I was hooked.

Very common in large corprate installs. JBL / crown has great solutions for distributed audio via 70 volt systems.

I'm looking at getting Pioneer DJ's newest speaker PIONEER DJ XPRS2, which is a 12" speaker. Along with their 15" Sub PIONEER DJ XPRS2 15 INCH REFLEX LOADED ACTIVE SUBWOOFER. ( I don't expect you to do a review of them, because they are a bit more pricey and unless Pioneer DJ sends you some, it's not likely feasable)

The problem with an app to control any DJ gear is when you go somewhere that there isn't any usable internet and therefore the "cloud" wont hook up and mobile data is expensive or unavailable. ( I am in Australia, similar area to " The continuous states " of USA but politicians that only support their sponsors, that is, the rich corporations that may give them kickbacks. )

DRM is the top of the line Mackie. Mackie owns RCF at one point you don’t have prepared statements about the company and their history for folks to know who they are. Calling their product a beginner speaker instead of the class of speakers they have like JBL, Chevrolet etc. as a DJ with 45 years in the business I not hating but trying to give u pointers to help step up your game. Bet you don’t know the electrical formula E X I = W
