As an Sound Engineer I can say that the over and under method is the right way to go to manage cables. 👍🏻 very good video bro.

Someone taught me the over-under cable wrap years ago. It really is the best way to keep your cables from twisting internally and the fact you can throw them out flat makes it totally worth it. I'll still chain the 100 foot extension cords because of the wire gauge, though.

Great video - very informative. I have found that over time the adhesive in electrical tape can tend to slip and get yucky... I found an alternative to color coding by using colored plastic cable ties. I use the Roman numeral system for identifying lengths: a white cable tie is 1 (I), a green is 5 (V), and a red is 10 (X). So, for example 25 would be two red cable ties and a green one next to each other at the end of the cable.

One other thing that need to do is to plug the cables into itself. For example, for extension cords and all xlr (Mic & DMX) cables, plug the male end into the female end....this will protect the male ends from braking off and keeps crap from getting stuffed into the female end.
@DeLewrh
@DeLewrh 2 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't plugging the male into the female end heighten the risk of breaking it off? 1. There's more surface area for something to catch onto. 2. Wider surface area = more leverage for something light to cause more damage 3. You're doubling the amount of connections made, multiplying that tiny damage when connecting cables to work twice as fast until the connections/contact plates are broken.

Thanks for the video! You're a man after my own heart with all that organization! I'm a new DJ and this is very helpful. Especially, the wrapping the cables. I had no idea they could be damaged using those other methods.

Great Video for Beginners. What most audio guys I've work with do is the lable maker but use clear Heat shrink to shrink the lable to the XLR connector or the cable itself. A little bit more expensive than sharpie but you can put more info on a lable. Been using a cheap duffel bag for over 8 years and still works great. Shows its wear and tear a bit but overall does its job still. Flown with it also and fill it up all the time with power and XLR cables. That bag you have is really nice though.

Give me a like! Tote Pro Tip: Avoid split top totes (like the one shown) for a few reasons... 1. It's easier to lift a lid straight off than to fold open two half-life to the sides, especially because the ones shown need open space to each side of the tote to open fully. 2. WATER! Rain, spills, moisture, and dew are part of the Mobile DJ world. I strongly suggest a solid top to keep water out. 3. Pests! Mayflies, roaches, mice, and other pests can fall into your totes, hitch a ride, or nest. I never considered pests until I did a river-side wedding and was infested by mayflies in the ONE split top tote, the rest were ok. BUY thick, quality, totes that latch well, stack, slide, and can handle some abuse. Rubbermaid Roughneck is a good option, but recently have reduced the thickness of the totes, making less desirable. Avoid thinwall rigid plastic (like clear totes) because they crack and split. Also consider if the tote tapers up OR if it is more plumb. Equipment may not fit in the bottom of the tote if it narrows by 2" from the top edge you measured!

I found a method that works pretty well for me, especially for xlr cables. Since I've not a lot of space, I usually pick both ends together and make it half and half, until I can fit into my bag. I do this on 20 ft cables and had them for 3 years now and they look new

After I clean my cables I use Back In Black for car rubber. One pull through a rag. It feels great and protects the rubber. I think it also makes cables a little more flexible. One more huge tip. If you have cables that are stiff and have permanent bends use a heat gun about 3 inches away and do sections at a time. This will completely straighten any cable you need.

We tape up our cables with Nitto Lekkie Tape. They don't leave that much gunk behind (unless people pull cable and the residue goes with it) We also colour code our cables with various links. We have blank Test Tags which we write the length and it also has our company info and logo on it too. 1m - Orange 3m - Green 5m - Red 10m - White 20m - Blue 30m - Pink

I have colored velcro, corresponding to the length. I have found that E-Tape tends to get sticky after a few Years. It helps for other People to have an explanation in your Cable Boxes. I also have a piece of clear heat shrink tubing on every cable. In there is a Label withy Name, Phone Number, E-Mail, the Length of Cable and the type of connectors om there. That Name and all probably won't keep anyone from stealing, but it will tell someone honest who it belongs to.

I see many use the "loop" method in big concerts and theatres, it's not very bad to use on small cables like XLR and DMX cables, but multicables and cables with many cores should use the "over and under" method. :)

Hey man, it might sound a little weird to ask this after so many years being a mobile dj, but for you what is the diference between an xlr cable and a dmx cable? I thought their construction and connections were exactly the same and the only diference was the protocol and information they use or transport. Please let me know, Im very confused
@DJRickWeb

Warm water alone is better than any DEGREASER in the long run! The RUBBER / VINYL cable covers are made from OIL. GREASE is also an OIL based product. DEGREASERS dont know the difference between 1 oil based product from another, therefore, to some degree over time the DEGREASER WILL DEGRADE the casing of your oil based cables! You might want to invest in some clear heat shrink that has at least a 3:1shrink capacity and put that around you color coded tapes! ✌️

why cant everyone use the over under. like i hate it when i go to wrap other people cables and they dont use the over under so it just makes warping it harder. also why the over under is so good 1) it will not hurt the cord 2) the cord will lay down flat on the floor 3) keeps the cable all together when wrap those are some reason why

The "over under" method still puts a twist in the cable. 21 years ago, as a young roadie, I was taught the "end to end" method. Grab both ends, and "fold" it in half. Continue to "fold" the cable in half until it's to the smallest size that you prefer. It doesn't twist the cable at all, and throws nicely.

There's no "industry" standard way of cleaning. We just use a dry cloth and sometimes Meth spirits and that also helps

25 min waisted........ jk Great video man! Lots and lots of cables! Question! Are those side bags safe enough to store the mics there?

Depends how much you throw the bag around... I drop mine from like 4 ft to the ground all the time and have never had an issue with my mics. The bag weighs like 45 pounds when fully loaded up
