Hi everyone, here's my in-depth review of the HK Audio Polar 10 Column Speakers. This video is longer than my others but includes sound test (using my phone), microphone tests, and bluetooth testing. If the audio doesn't sound good at any point it's purely down to my phone and not the speakers, they worked perfectly.
As always, I've not been paid monetarily or otherwise for this review.
Hope it helps, stay safe, and see you soon!
DJ80 :-)
Music used in the video may get muted, but if it doesn't the tracks played are:
'Google Me - Cliq feat Alika and Ms Banks' (Extended Mix)
'Real Love x Sunchyme - Clean Bandit, Dario G, Jess Glynne (VIP Mash up)'
'Get Loose - Mr & Mrs Smith (Andy Smith remix)' (Brilliant track!)'
'Not the House that jack built - ATFC'
'Let's Celebrate - Block & Crown' (Another brilliant track!)

Good review! I own one too, bought it about 2 months ago when it was on sale (899CAD). The sub is a wooden cabinet that is why it is heavy. I have a fairly large room (500sqft) in my basement and It is loud enough to hurt your ears. I agree it is a very handsome unit. I am trying to figure it out the exact tech spec on the top unit. So I can make it stereo.:)

thank you, good review - it has become so hard to find unbiased, unpaid, not-influencer-paid honest reviews anywhere! I am preparing to restart my solo gigs (singing, lots of guitar, mp3 backing tracks) and I have been using a Bose L1 and lately an LD Maui 28G2. I liked the Maui 28G2 but I think the mids and highs could be improved as it is a bit on the harsh side to my ears. My current setup is 2 x LD Maui 5, which sounds surpricingly good for acoustic guitar and voice but I think I will need more volume for playing pop/rock with backing tracks at parties. I was looking at EV Evolve 30 or 50 but I just discovered the HK Polar 10 which looks really good, has the right size/weight and is much cheaper. I will probably order a set right now after watching your video!

Xlr cables should work. If both speakers are suddenly not working I suspect it’s more to do with the equipment you’re playing music from. Unfortunately I can’t really help because you have to test each item in the sequence to check it’s working, so decks, mixer, cables, power leads…

Hi, thanks for such an informative review. Really enjoyed it. I've recently just purchased the Polar 12. Thinking of getting another one, as I play Drum and Bass and need that additional power when playing it continuously. I had a question about when it saids 'master limit'. Do I need to immediately turn it down? Or can this system handle being played when the master limit is flashing on and off? In the manual it mentions turning it down when the 'overdrive indicator' is flashing. Are they referring to the 'master limit' or is that something different. I don't want to rinse them too hard, but do feel that extra volume boost is needed. Thanks 😁🙏
@DJ80
@DJ80 Жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy. A lot of new speakers have a built in limiter now. If yours is flashing I have to assume you’re maxing it. If you continue to max them they’ll probably cut off (turn off) until they cool down. It’s a good safety feature to be fair. Sounds like you need a second speaker. In the meantime maybe look at your EQ’s going into the speaker and see if you can gain a few watts without hitting the limiter. 👍

Hi 🙋‍♂️ Just bought 2xPolar 12, I will receive them in a couple of days... the thing that concerns me now is: i will mostly use them via smartphone bluetooth connection and i cannot find any info over the internet, if I can somehow get stereo sound this way... I would really suck if I have to listen to 2x mono speakers 🤦‍♂️ Could you please tell me how can I connect both of them in stereo using bluetooth connection?.... Would it be enough if i connect via bluetooth to 1 unit a connect second unit via XLR cable?...Thanks 😬🤝

This is a good question, and I'm not 100% sure of the answer. I've just googled to check that bt transmits in stereo, and apparently it can. There appears to be different codecs (the way the music is compressed and transmitted) but if the receiving speaker uses the same codec as the sending bt device, than apparently nothing is lost, and it should sound exactly the same. With regards to broadcasting the music in stereo, my answer would be to use a xlr cable from speaker 1 to speaker 2. However, depending on your bt transmitter, you might be able to send the signal to both speakers at the same time (give it a try?). Additionally, there are transmitters you can buy seperately that will transmit to 2 devices at the same time (have a google). I'm interested to hear how you get on with this, please leave a reply, so myself and other potential users can find out. Thanks :-)

@DJ80 Hello. After a lot of searching, mails and phone calls, I finally came across the answer: HK Polar 12 ( and 10 also), do not have " True Wireless Stereo" and so, cannot be connected as stereo speakers via bluetooth. If you connect only to 1 speaker threw bluetooth and use an XLR cable to "forward" signal to the second, you will only have 2 mono speakers ( that sucks, as cheaper bluetooth speakers have this feature, maybe a expected a bit more from HK). It was explained to me ( and it really makes sense now), that I am among few persons who buy professional speakers to use them around the house :)) and if you go to a gig with them, no professional Dj will mix on a smartphone/tablet, they will surely have at least a mixer that can divide a signal left-right... CONCLUSION: so I can use HK Polar 12 as stereo speakers, I bought a Dennon Professional DN-F350 bluetooth receiver that will do the job perfectly (Link here:www.thomann.de/ro/denon_dn_f350.htm). Best regards!

@@Mami4217 Hey buddy, thanks for such a helpful reply. You're correct, I don't know any DJ who performs using bt, primarily because the lag makes it impossible to mix properly, but it's handy to have if your main playout breaks down and you need to use a back up (ipad or phone etc). It's interesting to hear that you are using them for house use, this seems to be a growing trend; and now using bt makes sense. I've had a quick look at that Denon receiver, more than up to the job, so you'll be very happy with the final outcome. You're home is going to be banging! :-) Thanks again and all the best!

Hi, not sure if you've figured out how to get stereo out of 2 HKs, Anyway, the Polar 8's are coming out and they will feature Two Way Bluetooth (TW5). Not much of a help at this time I guess. Anyway, I also have 2 Yorkville excursion EXM400s and what they do is use one speaker as the receiver and you can link the 2nd one up and get stereo sound via bluetooth. I am now looking at getting rid of these for a set of the Polar 8s from L&M in the fall.

I`m curios to find out what did u replaced them with when you sold them. I have a pair of the Polar 12`s and about a year ago one stop working at a party i was doing. It took five months to get repaired and returned to me. Just like you once a piece of my equipment fails i just can`t trust them. Just a side note, when i question why it was taking so long to have it repaired i was told that HK Audio was waiting for a power supply from china, so i think there might some truth to what people are saying.

I replaced mine with a pair of Maui 5’s, which I still have atm. I wanted light weight but powerful and they are probably the best at that. Sorry to hear about your problems, honestly I can’t say yes or no about the HK inner workings. I’m not paid or endorsed by anyone for anything I do, I simply buy the gear myself and then give my own impartial review. I use for DJing so I’m always weary of offering an opinion for singers because I just don’t know what your exact needs are. Sorry. However, on the face of it I wouldn’t pay an extra €300 for the LD’s, the difference in sound quality doesn’t justify it in my opinion.

@DJ80
@DJ80 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, thanks for the question. I bought these speakers because I'd had the Maui's for a few years and one of them died at a gig I was doing. No biggy because the 28's are powerful enough to run on one speaker (it was a kids disco). However, when I came to get the Maui repaired it was a nightmare, they only have 1 place (Sheffield) who are authorised to repair and it would've cost close to £400 all told. I got lucky and found someone 30 mins drive away who did repair it for £180. Once equipment breaks down on me it gets sold. No messing. I can do without the worry at my gigs. One of the biggest gripes I had about the 28's was lugging the boxes so I looked for something lighter. I also never in my ownership had to max out the Maui's so I realised I didn't need that much power either. My new speakers needed to be something of quality, ideally lighter, but with high sound output. I did lots of looking around and bought these. They edge the Maui's in my opinion because of overall value for money. Their sound output isn't far off the Maui's, they're cheaper at retail, they come with bags too (which is a real help for the columns) and overall I feel I replaced good quality with good quality. One thing though, I misread the total weight for these (read just the sub weight) and these too are also heavy, however their design does make them easier to carry. I'm actually going to use these in a project that's designed for outside gigs, such is my faith in their ability. My advice is, if these are the top of your monetary budget, buy them; you won't be disappointed. If your budget is higher, try and go listen to both, there's not a lot more difference but I'd be lying if I said the sound quality is as good as the Maui's. Cheers
