This was a restoration by from the original negative: “The restoration of Django was made by the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and by Surf Film, from a 4K scan of the original camera negative and from the Italian sound negative. The restoration was carried out in 2018 at L’Immagine Ritrovata”.

Great review of Django John. I'm a massive Spaghetti Western fan (plan on a book about them at some point). The dubbing is fun. Italians at the time post dubbed everything. No sound on set (apart from perhaps Leone who often had Morricone's score (already written) playing as he shot). It used to faze a few of the Hollywood actors as they would be filming their scenes and the crew would be playing football off screen. Given that they tended to be multinational productions, each actor would speak their native tongue and be dubbed later. It is one reason why these films often had hyper exaggerated sound effects. Which add to the atmosphere. Django spawned a load of other films with Django in the title - often having nothing to do with this original film. There is a genuine sequel to the original Django, again staring Nero, called 'Django Strikes Again' 1987 and Nero played a priest in the recent TV series 'Django'. That was not brilliant and had nothing really to do with the film apart from taking the name and a few image references. By the way. One of the so called sequels to Django is rather good - also got banned due to violence - 'Django Kill... If You Live, Shoot!' - didn't spaghetti westerns have brilliant titles. Now that is a cynical, dark, surreal film. It stars the wonderful Tomas Milian and I love it. If you like Nero is spaghetti westerns you could try 'Keoma' 1976 I love that as well but some may be put off by the Leonard Cohen rip off sound track but I like it. Aren't we lucky to be able to access these films in such quality these days rather than the awful, many generation away, pan and scanned, VHS copies, if we were lucky.

Hey John! Thanks for the review! Unless I hear differently, I think I'm going to go for importing the US Arrow 4K edition of Django, which is definitely scanned from the original negative, rather than the CultFilms release which doesn't sound like it's from the same source, judging by the word salad they've used to describe it! There was a similar issue with CultFilms and Dario Argento's Suspiria where they released a strangely green-hued 4K 'restoration', while Synapse, in the USA, did a 4K restoration from the negative with oversight from the cinematographer. It looks incredible. The Synapse restoration of Suspiria is actually available on Blu-ray in Italy, so I imported that one until I can get my hands on the US Synapse 4K. I didn't mind the dubbing in Django. I usually accept the 'rubber lips' on Italian films, given they're almost always post-synced anyway. That said, I watched an excellent Arrow release of a 1970s Italian police thriller (poliziottesco) the other day called The Big Racket. I unintentionally put on the Italian track and since it's an Italian film set in Italy with a mostly Italian cast, speaking Italian, I stuck with it. When it's one of those Italian co-productions with an international cast, where actors from all over the world are clearly speaking their lines in whatever their own language is, I usually go for the English. The Big Racket is directed by Enzo G Castellari (who made the original Inglorious Bastards and appeared in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds). It's a terrific action thriller staring Fabio Testi, a former stuntman, who bears a striking resemblance to a young Sean Connery. Lots of great action scenes, a good, if slightly silly plot, marred by a couple of instances of excessive sexual violence. In many ways, it reminded me of The Sweeney from the same era, funnily enough. I'm planning on getting the Creepshow discs with some Christmas money! I hadn't heard about the series, although I love the original two movies, so I can't wait to see these. Anyway, Merry Christmas and thanks for all your videos this year. I hope to see you review some of, if not all of, the new 4K discs of James Cameron's films coming out before Christmas. The Abyss and True Lies, I believe, have never been released on any later video format than DVD. Erik.

I just wanna say the 4k release did get a blu ray release recently. You can pick up the 3 disc set that has two films included called keoma and a bullet for the general.

Imagine that lolololo I simply must see this film I know I'll enjoy it !! Great review as usual John. I'm hoping to get a 4k projector and a screen next year. I was thinking about sound. I live in a block of flats and letting sub woofers etc rip would be an issue. Can you do sound through headphones with a cinema setup? What are the options? Maybe a video possibility?

Good review, John Django is a movie I've always wanted to like, but could never really get into. Maybe because I grew up on the Man With No Name Trilogy and got spoiled with the best possible versions of Spaghetti Westerns. You can dress Franco Nero up like a cowboy, but he lacks the cool badass authority that just comes naturally to Clint Eastwood. That's a handsome looking set though.

Great review John :) I really enjoy spaghetti western and recognize this film so it's possible that I have seen this film many years ago. I don't like subtitles but maybe it's a good idea to watch the original Italian version if it's a badly dubbed film.

Hi John. Since you're interested in the Creepshow series, may I recommend hunting down the American series: Tales From The Crypt. It was a series of horror stories that ran on HBO (Home Box Office) for seven seasons. ✌🏻🇺🇸

Nice one John. Never been a fan of subtitles myself as it constantly takes your eye away from the images. Usually settle for the sub par English dub for this reason. Controversial? Nah.

I loved this film and have the arrow 4K set with Texas adios. It’s a great film I watch along with deadlock. I find it a more engaging story than a fistful of dollars but the direction for fist is such a master work it makes up for the storytelling pits. I’d say texas adios is the worst of the ones I’ve seen so far but the scope from that was great to see. Recently picked up young guns on 4K so I’m hyped to see that.

Great review. Imported the Arrow edition from the US a few years back. Really nice quality, mind you the scratches are unavoidable. As for the sound, honestly it needs the Italian soundtrack because the English dub is atrocious.

I bought Django on 4k last year but bought it again this year due to the box set including goodies. I wasn't happy when I received it on Monday 11th Dec as there seemed to be ink stains on the cardboard sleeve that couldn't be removed. I returned it and received a replacement but the same ink stains are present. I've let Arrow Media know the issue but I don't think they will fix it. I nearly came out of retirment to make a KZfaq video on my channel just to rant because of this!

Well done, again. I did watch Hunter ,Killer. I really liked the movie even though it got terrible reviews. The picture is outstanding and the audio is not to be missed. For those with Atmos lots of overhead action. I did change my Panasonic from standard to natural as the picture was a little dark and that helped. Let me know if your opinion if you watch.

No HDR odd there is a UK release of that film with HDR10 and the US Arrow video has Dolby vision.

Would you consider reviewing the Cannibal Holocaust 4K ? One of my favourites.

Maybe I came to the Django party a bit late, sure, it's a good film, however I defy anyone to watch the Sartana box set from Arrow and not find each of those films getting more absurd and OTT as you watch each film in order. Nothing wrong with Django, but for me the Sartana films are where its at!
