Today we take a look around Proximity Data Centres, Blenheim Industrial Estate, 1 Bennerley Rd, Nottingham NG6 8UY.
The high security on the building and the excessive cooling systems which surround the perimeter led me to dig a little deeper to find out what this place is all about.
We speak to many people but nobody knows exactly what the place is, even the staff inside are very secretive.
We take the drone up to get more clues and zoom into the skip.
Shortly after we meet a member of staff who pulls up in a car.
We work out what the place does eventually
Enjoy!
Thanks to @Carl & Alison Positive Audio Liverpool who donated the drone music for this video. To listen to the Music & Drone Footage only, see this Playlist - • DJ Audits / D.a.v.i.d....

Why haven’t they got solar on that roof? The government are talking about setting up solar farms on arable land, which will reduce our food production capacity…. All whilst huge buildings like this have roofs which could be used instead.

The building operator may already have a contract for 100% renewable energy. Covering a small part of their daytime consumption with solar panels might not make sense for them. If the government or anyone else wanted to use their roof for solar pv there is nothing stopping them offering to pay to use their roof. It can be like a bakery growing a bit of wheat on their roof to offset the cost of flour.

The cooling installation here doesn't mean expansion. The cooling at the back of this building (original) is old and dated and uses an old cooling strategy where you cool the whole data hall. The new installation focuses that cooling only where it's needed, which is just in the racks on the intake side. In terms of who they serve, a full size 19" x 7ft rack would be more than capable of housing all of the government's IT server systems, with possibly another for storage. One of those racks could hold potentially 30-40 physical servers which, if using virtualisation could easily hold a further 50 virtual servers each - so a single rack could hold 2000 server systems. This building isn't supplying IT infrastructure to one client, they're potentially serving hundreds of clients, yes it could be government, but it could be something as boring as Derek from Derby's holiday photos.

Like your videos, but if they gave away who uses their servers and I had some servers there, I'd be pulling them from the data centre. Any decent data centre wouldn't give away what customers are in that centre. They might on their website have who their big customers are, but that's about it. Ultimately, they need to keep these centres safe.

Another goodun DJ - I am dismayed a little when I see cooling systems on the scale of those at these data centres. Why can they not install a system of using the spare heat for heating local factory units and homes or offices such as that which we have locally, where a straw burning unit to make electricity pumps its surplus hot water around to the local swimming pool, council offices and a primary school free of charge, thus returning the cooled water back to the plant. The use of liquid nitrogen and electricity to run those air con units is not very green is it? something you could maybe ask them about in your next interaction. Stay safe DJ.

@andybrown1460

they're installing a new, highly efficient cooling system. The system is used to provide cool air for computer systems intake - to keep the systems operational - optimum temperature of the system intake is ~20-21c. Any hotter, computer systems reduce their compute speed to keep the CPU from overheating. However, because the air input is constant, the hot side, whilst warm (40ish c), is nowhere near hot enough to be of any use to a secondary application. With air being a rubbish conducter of heat, even trying to use that output to heat a room in the same building would fail.

A quick Google search gives an overview Edge computing is used to process time-sensitive data, while cloud computing is used to process data that is not time-driven. Besides latency, edge computing is preferred over cloud computing in remote locations, where there is limited or no connectivity to a centralized location. Edge computing is used in the manufacturing sector to monitor manufacturing processes and apply machine learning and real-time analytics to improve product qualities and detect production errors. It also supports the environmental sensors to be incorporated in manufacturing plants

This is an Edge computing data centre, for low latency applications, like gaming, that need to be located very close to the end users, ie 'Proximity'. "Proximity Data Centres is a new provider for the UK data centre market, commencing operations in 2020 and the only specialist ‘edge’ focussed operator. They are aiming to open a string of 20 data centres across the country within 2020 and 2021 - a very short time frame. The company believe that a portfolio of 20 sites can be located to offer less than 15 miles distance from 95% of the population located outside of London, so ultra-low latency and 5G-related deployments will be one of their key selling points, ideal for edge applications."
@randgate
@randgate 2 жыл бұрын
Good to see you here :) Proximity are just a generic colocation provider. There are usually multiple suites (rooms) with one user or many users, within which there are hundreds of racks which hold the servers, each rack can have a different owner, in each rack are multiple servers which can have different owners, each server can have hundreds of different customers. It's not any of your tech giants, they have their own dedicated data centres and don't share with others.
@randgate

It's not really about latency (and proximity lol) to the user in the UK either, as majority of traffic between ISP and Servers goes via LINX in London or MANAP in Manchester, though there are regional IXP (internet exchange points) around the country they are a fraction of overall traffic. The latency difference between London, Wales and Edinburgh is so low, that unless you're doing something like high frequency trading, it is not noticeable to you where in the UK your traffic is routed.
@randgate

You might well be a user of this data centre when you visit an SME website, or use a third party app on your phone, you just don't know (beyond the privacy policy which should specific jurisdiction) where the data you download or upload is coming from. @@markdunkling1604 Yes, but you're talking a few milliseconds (for context London Manchester including overheads both sides would be 5ms, London to Amsterdam 8ms, London to NY 30ms, etc) and unless you and your ISP is connected to the same local PoP (point of presence) as the game server you'll see fractional benefits. Additional data centres is primarily about capacity, diversity/redundancy and latency for 99.9% of applications is a country level thing (other than the massive countries like US, Russia, China where for example NYC to LA is maybe 35ms). Netflix and Steam and Microsoft as examples may host caching content servers with your ISP's core in close "proximity" to you, but this is about improving the download speed and reducing the costs associated (hosting that content centrally requires bigger central pipes and dealing with intermediaries, which is costly to both Netflix and the ISP).

Co-Lo is pronounced Co Lo (it stands for Colocation). A common term for multi-use DC's. The Edge in the name suggests it's an Edge Location (part of a multi-part site) for distributing data at high speed nationwide. Perfect for streaming services. The data is copied to each Edge Location so it can be distributed faster to consumers as it's closer to them than a single, central datacentre.

I think Data centres are closer to city hubs, this looks more like a disaster recovery centre, probably a bank or maybe government contractor. When a city is attacked or loses internet access, essential staff can go to a recovery site and run a company. The servers are normally independent from the cloud in case of a hack or virus. Prudential used to have one and it was very similar.

Best guess is AMAZON using those servers . Considering Amazon is now building how many dist centers ? Starting to ramp up the "Flex" or what i call Cost Cutting Delivery Services . And ofc it prob hosts a load of other companies that sell web space etc etc , We used to Lease server space and sell it for web dev, didnt matter who it was if it was cheap and had the services we required we would lease out to Game hosting, web sites you name it . You can, if good in sales, make a good living selling space to businesses and host them . It could also be setup as E-commerce if you will . I created a Radio Station / Web Cam site myself .. so its isnt that difficult to do and make money from . My guess is they host everyone and everything they can but mostly ONE major buyer if you will . Most companies like this rely on One major company and everything after that is extra you could say .

I was a IT Network Manager, I had a hand building a £10 million pound site… In side will be small rooms with racks in them full of servers, Why it is easier to keep a small room cool than one big one, Look up Tele House in the dock lands London it is a main node of the internet in the uk, I had servers in there 👍

I guess with what’s going on with Russia at the moment it’s got to keep secret in case of attack. By the way that drone camera is amazing, thanks for another excellent video PJ.

I’m quite into outdoor photography of nice landscapes (not these buildings) and these videos have inspired me to get a drone. They make everything look like the view from a nice mountain top

At 14:03 it look like a bank of three diesel generators as part of an uninteruptable power supply (UPS) to power a computer system / data centre, in the event of a powercut.

good video as always but cant lie, on this one i never expected you to find out because if they are holding data for a client they wouldnt be allowed to give you information of who it is, either for data protection or just to prevent losing the trust of clients.

I'd love to see you do more data centers. Your definitely gunna get your kicks security wise around them 😂 iv worked in quite a few and every one has been extremely high security even when the contracts of the servers inside are publicly known. You'll never get inside the grounds like you often do at other places I don't think. Also not commenting on the contractor who was asking you the questions but it's quite likely the guys round the outside working, might not have been inside if it is indeed government owned

I mean, it seems pretty clear that it's just a data center company. Tons of expensive equipment and essentially zero room for downtime for that equipment. Hence the security..

The guy was filming you, so legally as a data subject the company is legally has to give you information of what they're doing with the data, how they are storing it and for how long, and a copy of the recording. You should just go and ring the bell and ask who to contact now or they breach GDPR.

This is pretty much any standard DC, the cooling and high security is usual due to the nature of sensitive data they hold and they won’t tell you who their clients are, most of the time half the employees won’t have that information anyway. As others have said though, this won’t be any of the tech giants.

@@imconfused1237 Yeah but none of them advertise where their data centres are so who's to say what's being stored anywhere. As for government the last time I used any of their systems they were moving off their own secure intranet on to less secure systems, they even relaxed need security clearance checks to access them
