Seriously these videos are so helpful to new djs. This problem comes up all the time with promoters or managers at a venue.

Couldn’t agree more. People always ask for, “dance music” at gigs/events. I always ask them what their definition of dance music is. Some people think of Prince when they think of dance music, some people think of EDM, some people think of dancehall or pop music. Always ask the promoter to be as specific as possible so that you know what you’re getting into.

So true I've done the club circuit and now I work as a mobile DJ. And I get the same thing from bridal parties. They want absolutely no rap... but make sure you play Flo-rida...lil jon..usher... Chris brown...etc. because as dj Tlm states their definition of rap is there hardcore stuff.

I define "oldschool" as the music found on the Lowrider Magazine collection called Oldschool. It's usually funk, disco and even freestyle from the late 70s and early 80s.

Same thing here.....with the promoter, and the definition is way important, every gig I'm doing.... I just make sure that there is no misunterstanding! ;-)

Old school is now anything 10 years ago. lol my go-to music is now call throwbacks (80.90) . Yes even Biggie is now a throwback in certain sections of the club world, lol

Like in Bali, they think Progressive House is “Techno.” 😆 It helps to visit the venue to check the vibe first if you can.
