Thanks for giving actual advice. I feel that most online artists boil it down to just posting on social media aimlessly. It's been frustrating. I defo think people are working from a scarcity mindset. Again thank you.

When you got to the new diagram and said "Be Awesome" all I could think of was Bill and Ted saying "Be Excellent to each other". Great video, thanks DJ

Great Advice DJ, Thanks for sharing. The rising tide raises all ships. I do the same thing. Creating comics for brands might not be as glamorous but it pays way better than Marvel or DC and helps fund my personal comic projects.

Thank you for this video I was recently contacted by a fire department to draw a colouring book for them. It was a great experience . I got the job by posting on Facebook. I’m currently trying to find more colouring books to do. Thank you for showing me how to find more opportunities!!!!

Congrats on the Gary V gig. It’s been weird for me in that the super picky clients haven’t been the ones paying more. It’s the ones paying less. I had to dump an anthology gig because they had this whole anal retentive editorial schedule they neglected to tell me till three weeks into the project. At the same time, I had another anthology paying double the page rate with minimal editorial and no corrections.

DJ, working in comics was my childhood dream. That’s what got me into art in the first place. The Sunday news paper comics were the start. Recently, I’d been thinking about it again. Do you have any tips on getting started again? My style has leaned more realistic for so long, it feels like a battle to do cartooning again. I started a realistic illustration today to try to blend the two together.

Also, content wise. Love this kind of content! I also wouldn’t mind an interview episode. But I haven’t made content so I don’t know how hard it is to get something like that together.

I must admit i never listened to any podcast to the end about creativity...but i finished this. My problem is i dont know if i wanna settle on cartoons or semi real stuff.... Ill start drawing, sometimes cartoons intentionally, but ill digress onto something else. This makes me feel very unsure on what approach i really wanna take! Thanks

I know that feeling well. I used to think it tell myself I could only do one or the other, a more cartoon/friendly style or an edgier graphic novel style. Something that helped me was the Pillar exercise. I’m a little long winded in this one but check out how to do it here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fM90hMteuqvJZmQ.htmlsi=hV6ol71Q6Iop_IvD

Great video! Awesome about the ukelele comic, so kewl. I’ve dabbled in strips, but mostly based on my life experiences and adding humor to them. I posted one last week for one of the prompts. There are times when I check out local businesses and I think of a design/logo or something that might help their biz and get my stuff out there, but finding the right way to reach out to them is always tricky. It’s that fear of hey this guy did this but we’re gonna say no and turn around and use it anyway without giving them credit. It’s happened to a guy I knew some years ago.

The more you practice, the better, faster you get! And you shouldn't cheapen yourself, but it's not expensive.

Thanks for all the advice, man. I'm transitioning into comics and cartooning as it has been my passion for decades, but I am finally letting myself let go of my old career path. Any tips for people who built a career NOT in art on how one can build that into their art career? Obviously, it was a pretty vague and general question, but I was unsure on if you knew of any pointers.

So I wanted to ask, do you feel that having a long form story that’s broken down into bits can work for comic strips?

Basically a set block of time where you would send e-mails or DMs, or dedicate that time to putting mailings together, some artists send hand written notes or postcards to editors or publications they have built a relationship with.
