⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Exploring Rome's Creepy Railway - The Rome/Viterbo Line (Urban Section)

The Rome-Civita Castellana-Viterbo railway is a regional railway line connecting Rome, Italy, with Viterbo, the capital city of the Province of Viterbo. The trains and physical plant of this line are in extremely poor condition, leading to the common online moniker, "Rome's Creepy Railway".
The line is split into urban and exurban services. Very frequent service operates close to Rome, and a much more infrequent exurban service operates to Civita Castellana and Viterbo. Enjoy this look at a very interesting operation!

Apparently when they ordered train cars, they purchased the “variety” pack. If you ride these trains, you must be on your toes at all times to make sure you find the doors, car steps, and don’t get your arm chopped off in those guillotine doors when they close. The trains do get you there , but be aware of all the quirks.

I'm from Rome and I used to take this line a lot from Flaminio to Saxa Rubra, where the national TV (RAI) offices are. It's amazing how that looks stuck in 1980 even in 2020. Oh, and it goes even better where this line goes outside Rome and towards Viterbo: single track, tight curves, barrierless road crossings and even mechanical signals. It's a rare piece of railway archeology, almost better than the narrow gauge Roma-Giardinetti.

I feel that many prefer to take a bus from Saxa Rubra towards Viterbo rather than the clackety-clackety train 😁 At least the busses are often quite packed. Also there is a modern train operating the west side of Bracciano.

Flaminio still has low platforms because the station was planned to be abandoned, and a new station for the railway and metro was planned to be built next to it. As usually in Rome, construction works for the new station are going painfully slowly, and so the actual Flaminio station is here to stay for a while.

From the 1st of July the management of the line has passed from ATAC, the company that manages the urban lines (bus + Metro) of Rome to Cotral + Astral, that is the company that manages the Lazio Extraurban Bus transport + Company that manages the maintenance of the regional roads of Lazio. From the projects presented, both the fleet and a large part of the line should be renewed. If she did the same report a few years ago she could have experienced the thrill of traveling on the wagon similar to the one used by Mussolini for the upgrade of the tramline to the railway line in 1932.

The 2000s trains look much newer than built in 2000. They look like they're from around 2018

it's visually fasinating , almost cinematic , someone needs to make a backrooms game but it's just graffiti roman trains and abandon looking stations , with all of these exact sounds

wait the doors close to the inside, and have a handle on them... so theoretically, could you just hold on to the doors and ride outside of the train?

You have to return in mid-2023 or 2024, as ATAC (the company running this line, Rome-owned) lost the contract and it was all passed under COTRAL (regional company that'll manage the train and the line) and ASTRAL (regional company that'll manage the infrastructure)
