That's 30 minutres of gold right here 👌in the end, it's all about what you want and how much you're willing to pay. My PERSONAL preference would be DJI Action 4, for the UI and the colors as I barely colorgrade. I think X3 is good to play with and get some fun looking pics, while Action 4 and Hero 12 are for the situations when you put the camera through harsher conditions. In a way, the more reviews I watch, the more I learn and the more PRO settings I wanna try!

If anyone is wondering, LOG formats are the video equivalent of RAW for images, except that its processed enough to be viewable as opposed to just data. LOG basically takes as much range as possible from the sensor and crams it into the video, which results in very washed out flat footage, but the advantage is you're getting more data out of the sensor which means you have more headroom for grading and postprocessing. If you shoot in LOG, just like with RAW, the expectation is that you will be adjusting in post. Some cameras can output RAW video as well, which provides even more data than LOG, but is harder to manage and results in drastically higher file sizes and compute requirements for post processing (since it is entirely uncompressed and includes all the data recorded). The short of it is, LOG is a professional feature to get more control and detail out of your footage, but requires more work.

Thanks a lot rob, first time buyer and planning for a trip overseas. The video has helped a lot and I think I will get the X3 based on your review, was going for go 3, but it seems like the 360 is something that makes you to have less hassle getting the perfect angle!

Hi Rob, always apprecciate your findings on motovlogging! Stabilization is one of the key factors here, so in your comparison could it be you found a bug in Action 4 and GoPro 12? I really wonder, cuz I've just got Action 4 and haven't found the perfect settings for low light yet (still testing), but so far with 1/400 or shorter SS I can get a decent stabilization

You did a great job with this review. I agree with the Insta360 choice but I am still not as confident with it's reliability as an action camera. It's not very resilient with those large large exposed glass lens covers. I also have been very hesitant in using it in water even though it says you can because of all of the reports of water damage with normal usage. Do you have any comments on using the Insta360 OneX 3 in the water (swimming, etc.) without the dive case?

Hi Rob i'm Currently using my S22 on a tripod with a wireless audio mic , with the mic attached to my lapel, i video myself in fishing matches and edit them and put them on my you tube channel . I now want to get a camera for doing this job instead of using my phone . But i must be able to have a wireless Mic attachment as the camera will be away from me and there will be wind noise on some occasions . I also need to be able to hit record from a remote as i will be sitting on my seat box and i cant keep getting up and down during a match. it basically needs to be in a click and go mode like my phone as i set up the best position before the match, So i can then just hit the record button when i feel i have something worth talking about during the Match. Musty be able to with stand a little rain now again . Any recommendations or Any advice would be great y appreciated .Cheers simon

Hello! I am a new travel content creator, looking to purchase my first action camera. I am looking into noise cancelling (especially for wind on beaches, etc. ) I was interested in the new DJI 2 mic, and called DJI customer service, and they said they cannot provide feedback on the new DJI 2 mic's compatibility with an Insta 360 X3 as it's not a DJI product. Any insight if a regular wireless mic w/ a dead cat would work with the Insta 360 3X?

It's a verry complete review. I think it will be verry informative for a lot of people. Especially because all the brands claim to have the best camera's off course and there're a lot of fanboys and fangirls out here on YT, promoting one or another. Although I feel the overheating/battery test could be a bit better. It's clear that the GoPro had a lot of issues on overheating on older models. They've seen to have worked on that now with the 12. But this is only applying to a few resolutions if I'm correct. The biggest change they made on this is on 1080p. But they actually decreased bittrate drastically on this resolution. Less bitrate is less processing so less heat. They also decreased bittrates on 4K quite a bit. And didn't had tested it out on 5.3K (actually never use this resolution. But testing all camera's on the highest resolution is a bit strange. The Hero12 needs more processing on 5.3K then the Action 4 on 4K. So it would have been quite obvious which would running out first. Maybe the A4 was still outrunning the Hero12 both on 4K, since the Hero12 is just the Hero11 with reduced bittrates. But it would had been a better test when the Hero12 was set on the same resolution and frame rate as the A4. But yeah, I'm also thinking about going to return my Hero12. It just feels like still having the Hero11. And I thought it was me, but the touchscreen sometimes really feels a bit unresponsive and laggy. So good to see that more people have this problem. I think the X3 would be a great replacement. The only thing which is withholding me is the vurnability. Wished they integrated something like replaceable lenses.

Action 4 any day of the week for me. Quality stands out by a mile than anything else on the market for now. The 360 looks good but still think it’s still more of a gimmick if you set your shots up right.

Great video, thank you so much for all this information! In terms of overheating I think companies and most of the KZfaqrs do not test the cameras the way a regular person will use them during holidays. Millions of families go to a warm destinations for holidays every year (Mediterranean, Indonesia, Thailand, Middle East, Africa, etc) and they wish to capture every moment of their holidays. In places where temperature is permanently between 25-35 degrees Celsius these small devices overheat quite quickly and unfortunately nothing is recorded past this moment... 😢

Thanks for the comparative review. I have the Osmo Action 1, it’s a nice little camera but the sensor it’s tiny and old. The Insta 360 X3 it’s better for a solo traveler like me so thinking in buying one soon. I was hoping the Insta360 x4 came out this fall but it will be in 2024.

Rob, a good watch on my Sunday morning with a coffee. You’ve influenced me with my X3 purchase and I used it in Prague last weekend. Once you get beyond looking a donut with the 3 metre pole, it’s a great choice. My list would be X3, Go3, Action 4, Go Pro 12. At my age, days of kite surfing, snow board jumps are behind me! Will check out epidemic sound out soon. Keep up the good work and enjoy Hawaii !

I used all for snorkling now in Hawaii and the X3 was definitely the most fun to use. As of quality it all comes down to how deep you go and how much light you have. With good light all cameras will do a great job, but the GoPro is the worst of these when it comes to correcting the white balance, Action 4 and X3 does a really good job

At the end of the day, they are all regular action cameras that are being updated each year. So I would probably buy the X3 and see what the 360 perspective can bring to me. Although the image quality does not look as crisp as the other 2, for social media 1080p would be good enough? And the fact that you can just reframe later saves lots of effort really sold me, do you have any recommendations on the accessories that I should purchase for the X3?

Rob, Thank you for the very honest video. I love the value I gained from it. I managed to snag a Insta360 X3 for $370 and a refurbished Action 4 for 239. I wanted to keep one and return the other. I am yet to try them. They are yet to arrive, and I have a cruise coming up with the family and I want to pack light and capture as much as I can. What do you suggest I keep and take with me to cruise? I love the video quality from Action 4. I also love the idea of 360 video from X3, but the quality when you reframe for a single side seems pretty bad and I do not want lower quality memories of the trip. Please advise. @RobHK

Can someone tell me which action camera that can connect directly to iphone (lightning plug) using cable for file transfer. I just want a everyday carry action cam I can use on the go and edit the footage using my iphone, transferring all those high quality video via Wifi is PITA. I can’t find any reviewer who talk about wired file transfer to iphone lightning plug. I use to have insta360 x2 and insta260 go (first version) that can directly plug my cable and transfer the files to my iphone.

I know your comment is 4 months old now but the company making the cords dictates whether a cord can be used for file transfers. As long as your camera supports wired transfers from its usb-c port it does not matter what kind of plug is on other end, that is as long it is a file transfer capable cord (most are nowadays and not even sure if there exist a usb-c cord that DOES NOT support file transfers. Pretty much since micro-usb was introduced this has been the norm

@@christconscious1784 I'm understand your comment, I've tried the iphone original cable. But the problem is the insta360 app wont recognize the camera if I connect it via cable. Even I tried connect my insta360 using it's own usn C cable that came in the box to my samsung s23 but the app still won't detect the camera. Phone file manager app can detect the insta360 cam, but with 360 video files you still need the insta360 app to edit and export the video on the phone. It used to work flawesly with older insta360 cam using wired transfer and the app can detect the camera without issue. Why can't we have the same function with newer camera.

Hi together! I am currently looking for an action Camera. The Occasion is a bike Trip through south and east africa whom i want to document. I Need a very stable Model and battery enduring model. My first choice was the insta 360 x3 but my Focus is on pictures and therefore its probably Not the Best choice. Due to the nature of this journey i am not able to bring a Real camera. DJI Action 4 is the best. I own the 4 hero 12 cams and 4 DJI Action 4 cams. Hero 12 have battery drain issues.

All depends what your using for, I have older go pro 4 and 7 and never crashed or let me down, Had insta x2 and sold it as did not like small round onboard screen but the insta 360 x3 is excellent for water sports like windsurfing and just press record button and get every camera angle in post later, the Go Pro and DJI have bigger sensors so better quality video footage, take you pick and be happy using it 😎😎😎

But gopro has faaar better picture/video quality compared to X3 right? My use case is recording virtual walks in well lit area like on a trip and then enjoy it later on a VR headset . I really want the 360 video but the quality looks horrible in X3. Any suggestions?

Can’t relate to that, just got back from hawaii and gopro12…again is the worst camera. Unreliable and can’t handle a normal forest hike without glitching out. The X3 also shines in bright conditions tho so either x3 or action 4 for that. I would stay away from gopro any day

True, gopro has a more vibrant color space than any camera. It’s more candy ish i would say. The natural helps but is still more vibrant than normal on dji and vivid on the instas

I had the X3. My footage never looked as good as yours does in this video. Not sure if I had a bad unit or if I was just bad at using it. I also have Go 3. My Go 3 footage looks exactly like yours and it's easy to get decent looking footage. It's a super fun camera to use. I have a GoPro 11, that thing is trash. Overheating and freezing. Plus it only looks good in very bright sunlight. To get anything decent indoors or in low light, I have to turn off the stabilization and use a gimbal. Too much effort. Plus the GoPro mounts are clunky and slow. For now I like Go 3 and Pocket 2. I'm trying to sell the GoPro 11 and look for a deal on a Pocket 3.

I do use my custom LUTs on these cameras tho, unless it´s a direct side by side. These are made to enhance the image, but out of the box it´s mainly a few settings to change and basic adjustments in post. All this cameras are good. It is impossible, to make a mistake. Biggest disadvantage of all this camera is between camera and shoes.

After, all considered I personally went with the Go 3 64GB due to it's versatility, and got it for the right price ( < $300 USD) . Although it is not my primary camera. Pros - light and small - POV shots - magnet mounting - international traveling - insta360 app ( it is one of the best camera apps.)

The Go 3 just seems more approachable as a newbie to action cameras. It looks like a toy compared to the other three, although the DJI is actually cheaper than the 128 gb Go 3

DJI is the best camera overall, but if you will use the camera only for cars, bikes, etc, then the x3 is better. sad the gopros didnt improve overall after gopro8... it gets fancier good looking, lots of cool features but you cannot have only 1 and think it wont freeze or oveheat, in most countries during summer it will just die in 5 minutes or 10 max, if you live in a cold country then no problems with gopro...

Takk Robin for en god gjennomgang av de ulike kameraene. Jeg sysler med tanken om å kjøpe meg en Insta 360 X3 og etter å ha sett videoen din er jeg enda mer gira på det. 1 min 22 sek ut i videoen din var jeg nesten sikker på at det var dattera mi, Ingrid du hadde filmet i Krogshavn. Likheten er slående. Men 2min 47 ut i filmen skjønte jeg at det måtte være din livsledsager. Vel, du har gitt meg flere gode grunner til også å investere i Insta 360 X3 nå før jeg drar på en 2 måneders tur igjen til sør-øst Asia. Jeg kommer nok til å se på flere av videoene dine. Kanskje du også vil se noen av mine? Flere er filmet i Krogshavn. Mvh Asbjørn, for tiden i Berlin.

For action sports the best action camera is the GoPro 12. Everything else you can use your phone, no one needs more than 1 action camera.

I have a X3, and after 14days i send it back. Bad bad video quality image, my phone (cheap) its better than that.

Why to use optical zoom in a action camera? The purpose of them its to recording while you do something else.

90% of people watch videos in 720p and under. They also watch on a phone under $300 cost. 4k video is completely unnecessary outside the editing bay. Furthermore it eats up sd cards and storage on your hard drives. It also takes forever to export.

Thanks for the great comparison Rob! I prefer the X3 and Go 3, had too many issues with GoPro in the past and the blacklisting of DJI is a bit of a pain with the software, I already got enough trobule with my drones :)
