Very tempting, but don’t be surprised if DJI drops the Air3s a few months after you break the bank on this drone. To me the Air 2s is good enough. It’s pretty easy to transport too. Pretty powerful and compact drone.

The only real upgrade to me on this new drone is flight time. If you can get close to 40 minutes flight and it's cheaper than the Air2s.

Air 2s is a better choice with that 1'' sensor. To me, best option is mavic 3 with three cameras, one with 4/3'' hassleblad lens

Thx for the comparion. Got mine today and made real life comparison between 48mp and 12 at ISO 1600. At my test, I preferred the 48mp, that had a little bit more sharpness which i can trade for noise reduction. At the color test, it's definitely not just personal preference. Just take a look at how well the mavic3 separates the reds!

Thanks for the in depth review with an emphasis on picture and video quality and comparisons. I came for the Air 3 review but unexpectedly learned the best threshold settings after ISO 400 between 12MP and 48MP photos for my Mini 3 Pro. That is especially useful because I have been underwhelmed with the quality of my 48MP low light photos. I never bothered trying the 12MP resolution; figuring if the 48MP couldn't produce something sharper then the 12MP surely can't. I'll have to go experiment as a result of this new insight.

Great video. Thanks. Looks like I’m sticking to the Classic. I just don’t see a quality improvement for stills. This is by far the most objective and best review of the drone’s camera function and photo quality. I grow weary of fanboy reviews that conclude every new DJI offer is better than its predecessor.

Thank you so much for making this information available. I know it took a lot of work! One test I would be interested in seeing is dynamic range. Take an image of a gray scale, for instance, and see how well these cameras do in the light and dark extremes. I have a Mini 2 and very often the whites loose all detail even though the image is correctly exposed.

Take a look at the link we shared to the full size images. Our camera chart has something close to that but it won’t give you exact DR data, which requires a very expensive machine we don’t have.

Nice flying for the videos at the end. The music was cheesy. Thanks for the lens comparison, even though my Air 2S did not sparkle! For most of the still landscape work that I do, it is still sufficient and will stay with it until I need a Mini 3 Pro for travel.

Glad to see it have WayPoints and the up to 3 zoom is about perfect for most. I do love my Air 2s. July 7th I was able to introduce the Mavic 3 Classic into my drone arsenal and boy is it amazing! I am glad to see with all these new features with the DJI Air 3 make a great introduction with all the extras that the Mini 3 Pro had and some of the nice upgrades that are with the Mavic series placed into the Air 3 is a real nice touch! I do wish my Classic had Oc4 or at least compatible with that option. Would help upsell me into the new DJI RC2! Curious to see the range increase using the new RC2 with the Mavic Classic! Does the RTH have the ability to maneuver around objects like the Mavic 3 Classic?

You didn't mention that there there isn't a battery charger included in the fly more package, and no ND filters, each of those will cost about $100 each. So that will bring the price up to what the Mavic 3 classic costs. Maybe I'll wait a little longer on this one.

Awesome job as always, Greg, and I particularly like the direct comparisons to other DJI models. It was enough to confirm it's not worth it (for me) to replace my beater/travel Air 2S. It's a clear upgrade if someone is coming from an Air 2, Mini 2, or cheaper "toy" category drone, but it shows if I wanted a compromise between size, price, and function I'd go for a Mavic 3 Classic instead. I'm still hoping to see an Air 3S/4 with a single better, larger sensor and variable aperture -- perhaps the Mavic Classic's 4/3" sensor. I predict the Air 3 won't be too memorable a model, unlike the Phantom 4 Pro, Mavic 2 Pro, and Air 2S, which will be remembered as classics for years to come.

Yeah if you are coming from the A2s then its not worth the upgrade. I've been using the mini1 since 2020, sold it last month and I think its time for an upgrade! haha

I just received the Mavic 3 Classic 3 weeks ago and I absolutely love it! I love the Air 2s, but dang seeing how much bigger the camera is on the new Mavic 3 Classic is huge! I really love the Waypoints, now that is an amazing extra! The Air 2s Camera looks so small now!

To put the gimbal cover on easier after the propellers are tucked away hold the drone vertical and place gimbal cover directly over camera

Great review, thanks! One question: what is the video bitrate in 30fps compared to 60fps? Is 30fps limited to 100Mbps? Do you only get 150Mbps with 60fps? Or are they both 150Mbps?

Great video, thank you! For me, the deal breaker is the fixed aperture. I have had the Mavice 2 pro for some time and the ability to alter the aperture really helps me to achieve the optimum shutter speed for smooth video. So, it's going to be the Mavic 3 pro or maybe wait for the Air 3s to see if adjustable aperture is added. With the 3x lens, the abilioty to control depth of field becomes important.

That Mavic 2 Pro’s camera is exceptional. I have yet to see a DJI consumer drone since that can best its still image quality despite the claims of the 48mp ones.

I agree. I doubt the variable aperture will be added to the Air series. I think they will keep that for the Mavic series always.

Drone Covers: I know many people don't like the cover that comes with the DJI Mavic Classic, but I really do. Once you figure out to just face the front straight up and place the front cover over it and bring down the bottom section and let it grab the blades. Use a finger or hand to keep that part in place and bring the other around and just strap it down. This is so much better than putting on a front cover, than using a strap and getting the blades lined up and strapping them down. When you want to use the Mavic Classic hold the front end up and just disconnect the back end real quick and take it off. It doesn't get much quicker and easier than this. Plus the cover when you place the front end straight down into the storage bag I feel does a much better job protecting the propeller arms from any possible damage due to a drop. I bought that same sort of front cover for my Mavic 3 Classic and I don't like it much at all. I think it looks not so good like it does on the Air 3! I think the Air 2s has the best camera cover so far when it comes to looks. It installs well and looks cool seeing your camera protected in this nice gimbal cover.

It's interesting how much better the Mini 3 Pro usually performed in your torture tests, but seeing the footage, the Air 3 has much more crisp detail of most of the shots except at one point when the Air 2S looked the best (which is hard to do with such a soft lens). I guess the takeaway is to look more at the video footage than at the torture test results.

Greg, great video, but one correction. At the 14:02 mark, you state the air 3 can shoot in manual when doing 48MP photos, and the 2s couldn’t. The 2s was a straight 20MP. Think you may have meant mini 3 pro.

I’m going to buy this one to update my air 2s. A little upset the rc pro won’t work with it as I love the hdmi out on the controller but not a deal breaker for me. I’ll keep my air 2s too.

Thank you for this, It kind of reaffirms what I was thinking this drone is going to be. I think the dynamic range is better for sure with the air3 but overall I prefer the output of the air2s, simply because of the sensor size. I really wish they had chose a 1" sensor main shooter, and a 1/1.3" 3x shooter. I would have upgraded to the mavic 3, however, They haven't released the SDK for the mavic 3 yet, only on the enterprise version. That, and the batteries are so expensive now. I have 8 of the air2s batteries so I can have a rolling battery system, which are ~100(CAD) each, the mavic3 batteries are 240 (CAD) each. So, if I wanted a rolling battery setup like I have now, I'd be paying more for batteries than I paid for the drone itself, which I could accept -- but only if they keep the same battery chassis for future models. They make it so painful to upgrade in that regard. There is literally no reason they couldn't keep the same battery housing, especially with how they are designed now, they are rectangular rather than the shape of the drone. But, DJI won't confirm that they plan on with the batteries, so I'm hesitant to upgrade until I see some proof that they want to give their customers a reasonable upgrade path.

Thank you for the detailed review! I wonder how many people are going to online shops now and buying Air 2S or Mini 3 Pro now because of the cheaper pricing... I understand DJI aimed for middle ground between Mavic 3 and Air 2s but I'm disappointed at the specs. Especially smaller sensor than Air 2S... We don't need 5.4K for phone screens but the ability to be able to crop to 4K is nice. Again DJI cuts some of the functions they could've just added...

Also the extra usbc port thats under the black flap is for a microphone if youd like to voice over a screen record vs the one thats exposed for charging and transfering data, I hear. I was wondering did they jumble all that versitility into one port🤷🏽‍♂

Thanks for the in depth review! Your comparison chart shows waypoint for the DJI Air 2S. As an Air 2S owner, I'm aware of waypoints for hyperlapse but not the true waypoint mode like the Mavic 3 line or Air 3. Do you know something we don't? Are waypoints coming to the Air 2S?

I am currently looking for an upgrade and have one chance, because i cant afford it, to choose a camera that can film fast birds in flight and get the best resolution as possible..Is it the Mavic 3 classic or this new Air 3. I am upgrading from the Air 2 but i cant have anymore cartoons in my images.

The Mavic 3 classic does have the advantage of variable aperture. It’s missing the 3x so it depends on what will be best for you.

So I’ve been testing the RC remote antennas to try and figure out if I have a bad remote. I’m not getting much better signal over my air 2s N1. Today I flew with the antennas still folded up until I dropped a couple signal bars. I then hovered and deployed the antennas in the recommended orientation, along with several other combos, and there was zero difference in signal between any of the orientations vs still folded up. Anyone else try this?

Hi . Great review . But… correct me if im wrong. Dji published that this new air 3 has a “waypoint “ offline paln ( like waypoint 2.0, the big ones has , which the air 2s and the mini pro 3 doesn’t. Its not like the hyperlaps waypoint, but totaly new waypoint option , so … you really don’t need the leachy . Anither thing is that this drone compatibles with the fpv option - google and stick. Ill be glad to know if i was right

I use one controller (RC Pro) for both my Air 2S and Mavic 3 Classic. The RC pro is not compatible with the new Air 3, at least for now. And at least for now, after spending $1200 on that controller and having cellular connectivity, that's a deal killer for me regardless of the camera used in the Air 3 or extended flight time. Bummer.

Wow, I'm really torn here as someone considering the upgrade from the Air2s--especially eyeing that 3x lens addition. On the one hand, IMO the Air3 seems to not fair well on the studio stills test--even compared to the A2s in all all but a few tests. Or at least similar results but not an improvement on the Air2s. On the other hand, your real-world video footage test (to my eye on a 4K 27" screen) the Air3 seems to shine above them all in terms of resolution and contrast on both the 1x and 3x cameras. Did you shoot any real world still images with the Air3?

After having downloaded the sample still DNG files and processed them myself in LR, I take back what I said about the stills quality. If my sample of the Air 3 which I should take possession of today is as good as yours I'll be very happy.

How hard did you actually try to sideload third party apps into the new DJI RC 2, and how experienced are you with Android hardware management? With the 32GB of onboard storage this time and a faster processor, I was hoping it would be possible to force a second app onto the device.

I am surprised that in ISO department, there are no vast differences in terms of noise between Mini 3 Pro & Mavic 3 Classic. I thought that the size of a sensor would makie it much more obvious. That's said there are other qualities of Mavic 3 sensor that stand out.

At this point, I’m not sure who would choose a M3 Classic over this. The main camera may be slightly better, but the Air 3 is such a great package, it’s hard to choose a different one.

Does this mini USB C port on the RC2 automatically recognize USB C wireless microphone receivers for screen recordings?

@PilotInstitute that's what the second USB C port was for in the original DJI RC. And also I believe so that you could transfer a bit of the controller battery power to your phone or other device if your needed an emergency top up. But mostly it was useful for use with a lapel mic.

I have a Air 2S, flew fine last time then the software update and right now it’s a paperweight. Still trying to figure out the issue.

Did you try contacting DJI about it? I love the Air 2s and so far never had an issue with the update basically bricking the Air 2s. I could see the issue if for whatever reason the update was disrupted and causing a problem.

Very informative, detailed, and eye opening, BUT..... It's a shame that your comparisons are only between current DJI models (and of course the the Air2S). Most consumers that are longing for upgrades are from the previous generations, especially the Mavic 2 owners that couldn't justify the expensive Mavic 3. Any plans to compare Mavic 2 camera images to the Air 3 side by side? BTW, from what I saw across the board, the Air2s seems to be the better image quality, with the M3P close behind. I guess DJI is going for versatility?

Which drone would you like to see it compared to? We didn’t have the unit long before the release so we had to pick and choose but can do more comparison after we come back from Oshkosh.

Was it easy to get authorization to fly so close to Thumb Butte?

No authorization needed there. You just need to avoid flying close to the top because of birds activity. We were very far by the main road.

@@PilotInstitute Okay! I was concerned about the airspace. But it looks like aloft has it incorrectly marked as E2 when it's really E4.

It's only E2 at night when the entire airport turns into E2, it turns the extensions into E2 as well.

You need more views fot the quality/ value of info provided. Thank you. Can i suggest something? Make "shorts" about some of the highlights discussed....a short about follow mode and 1 wheel, a short about resolution comparison....a short with exactly what you went through arround / after 30:00 min mark.... you'd be surprised on the traffic that would drive!! I could think of 10 shorts, at least just from after the midpoint...."Its an amazing drone...with...(name features) but there is 1 feature I can't stand....I actually hate it" show image/clip of you fumbling with the gimbal cover...

We are working on those. Unfortunately this release was timed very badly for us, we have been at EAA Air Venture air show all week with our production team so we haven’t had much time to release too much more content about this.

Did I miss your explanation on why on your test during the 12 Megapixel comparison.. was the Mavic 3 Classic set at (f5.6)..rather than 2.8? to be the same comparison with the Air 3's aperture?..thanks

I mention it briefly. The 5.6 gives the sharpest image, which is where Mavic 3 owners would set the aperture to get best quality.

6:30 the problem with scientific "lab" testing of the flight time, is that its not entirely equivalent to real world scenarios.. Actual in-flight testing has shown that the Air 3 has MORE flight time from the battery when flying forward at 10-15m/s compared to hovering.. This is because when flying forward, the props only have to deal with "fresh air", while when hovering, they lose lift due to prop wash from the turbulence they create around them. Also, i cant believe reviewers actually talk about how you have to open the legs in order... This literally has no relevance, it is completely nonsensical to even bring up as a topic (pro or con). You dont review a product based on the 1st time someone uses it, if someone might be "confused" for 1.2 seconds by a leg not opening becuase the other one isnt opened first... You review a product based on daily continual usage, since those 1.2 seconds only happen once, then are followed by hundreds if not thousands of hours of regular usage where you KNOW the drone you're flying..

We can only do lab testing in a controlled environment while hovering. That’s why DJI posts 2 flight times, one for hovering and one for forward motion. As far as the legs operation, it is absolutely worth mentioning because people often have several models they use, some opening one way, some opening the other.
