The area, which is little known, prides itself on its clean beach with crystal clear waters. However, just above the beach, along the boulevard and even higher up the hill, there is a huge building, left unfinished. The reason for the Althea area in Agia Marina Koropiou, where dominates what is known as the "Junta Hotel", the large tourist project that was never completed.
During the period of the 7-year dictatorship, several projects related to tourism and the construction of new units were started. At the same time, the famous sea loans appeared, which were given directly to the interested "friend" businessman.
Complaints in the post-colonial era exposed a series of selective lending that created many hotel hulks whose owners took "hot" money but never completed the investment. The loans had a duration of 18 years with a five-year grace period and covered from 20% to 70% of the total investment.
In Attica, a basis was given to the creation of new hotels, but also to the expansion of older units in the name of development. The huge hotel building with a swimming pool on the roof and with three adjacent sections that made up the main building, as well as two additional rows of bungalows, on the beach promenade and in front of the sea, in the Althea area, was one of the ambitious plans of the Junta .
It was planned to have more than 400 rooms, covering an area of 65 acres.
At that time, a bank loan to invest in the tourism sector was an easy task. It is enough to know Ioannis Ladas, ironically called "clean hands". His name was implicated in "sea loan" cases and in 1975 he was sentenced along with the other coup plotters to life imprisonment.
The hotel in Althea was never completed. The usual practice was to collect the loans and use them for other purposes. In the case of the ghost unit, there was never a clear explanation as to why work stopped. Some even invoked the energy crisis of 1973 or the change in tourism policy after the restoration of the Republic.
The unfinished hotel is still known to the local residents as the "Junta Hotel". In fact, she even has a nickname "Miss". It directly referred to the name of Papadopoulos' wife, as many believed that the dictator's wife had some involvement in the realization of the ambitious plan.
The younger residents of Althea and the wider area also knew the abandoned hotel as the "Koskotas Hotel". Long before the scandal involving the businessman and banker broke out, the hotel complex had passed into its own ownership.
For almost half a century, the hotel in Agia Marina has remained half-finished and looted. From time to time, investors have appeared who wanted to invest and complete the hotel, but without any positive outcome.
