I've been using the Mavic 2 Pro for a couple of months now and this video covers my thoughts about how it compares to the previous Mavic Pro, and what settings I've found work for getting the absolute best out the camera's 1" sensor

Best genuine review I've found, from a real photographer, unlike the many young guys setting up "master classes" claiming to be pro's. They fill their videos with few facts and much nonsense, Andy has done a spectacular job with his opinions and experience which surpasses many wanna be presenters. Well done and thank you. Thanks for the comment John, I'm glad you found the video useful. I find negative comments about the Mavic 2 sensor a little surprising to be honest. I think sometimes people seem to expect every product to be amazing at everything for everyone, and see any element that doesn't compare favourably with another product as a failing. For me the reality is that everything is a compromise in some way. A drone like the Inspire or Matrix will give you better image quality but the compromise is in how portable it is. At the other end you've got a tiny drone like the Spark or the Air which are incredibly portable but you compromise on image quality, so the question you need to ask yourself is what areas you're willing to compromise in and how much. The Mavic 2 Pro isn't supposed to replace the P4P, it's supposed to replace the previous Mavic Pro, and in that respect it's a huge improvement. The sensor is excellent. Shooting in D-LogM I've been amazed at the detail, dynamic range, and lack of noise in the image. The P4P might be slightly better, but would be less useful for me as I'd usually leave it at home due to it's size and how problematic it would be to carry it along with my camera gear, so in that respect the better image quality is irrelevant...what's the point in having something with better image quality if you don't carry it with you? So have fun with the Mavic 2, I highly doubt you'll be disappointed with it.

Hey Andy, thanks for a great vid. Getting into the why not just the how. I've been a camera nut for decades, but the two things about my new found love of drones (owned a M2P for three weeks now) are the vantage point advantage, and I've discovered video vs just stills. My Nikon gear feels lonely. Still the drone can't compete with my 80-400 or 8-18. I couldn't find the link to the guy you mentioned who talks to the barrel distortion... Thanks again for the fantastic work. Doug

Awesome review. Thank you. As an fyi if your'e shooting in RAW it doesn't matter what white balance you choose.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you liked it. When I said to sett white balance manually I was referring to video settings because if you leave it on Auto it can change during the clip. For example if the sun passes behind a cloud Auto white balance will try to compensate you can end up with colour shifts in the same clip that are hard to change when editing the video.

Thanks, glad it was helpful. As for the sand...I tend to be shooting a lot in quite harsh conditions and my stuff gets battered. This video is almost two years old now, and since then the drones been landed on more sandy beaches, dusty volcanic deserts, snow and mud, and it's still going strong. It's a tougher drone than you think

@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, thanks for the comment and glad you liked the video. With the drone in the sand, it was something I did just for the video because I had to use my hands to operate the camera. Rest assured thought it was only there for a couple of seconds and all the sand was blown off when I got home. I've been out shooting this coast for over 15 years so I'm used to dealing with sand on gear. To be honest though I used the first Mavic in some pretty extreme situations - dusty windy places in Iceland, snow in Norway, and often it's difficult to give gear the proper "love" so it has to be able to deal with a bit of dirt and sand. Most stuff actually can quite well, as long as you don't overdo it and make sure to clean it properly with a blower brush later on.

@@AndyMumford Glad to hear it! Yeah, I do believe they're making gear with much better tolerance to debris these days because they know how it will be used. I guess the sand phobia has stuck with me. I grew up doing wildlife, landscapes, and some fashion photography with SLRs that could be just devastated by a few grains of sand. Bear attack - no problem. But a little sand... yikes!

Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video. I haven't actually done a video on colour grading - I still think of myself as learning with video. I use Premiere and basically just grade the footage till I get it how I like it using the whites/blacks/shadows/highlights, saturation and colour temp/tint. I rarely touch any of the other colour controls.

Many thanks for your superb video and settings Andy. As a fellow photog, I valued your suggestions and settings. I've had my Mavic Pro 2 for just over a year, and one of the things that drove me crazy, was the gimbal tilts rough movement. Tried your settings (15:25 in) and found they are purrrfect! Haven't tried the Colour setting you suggest yet - have to learn how to use Final Cut Pro to get the most of this setting. One small suggestion for future vids - try slowing down a touch - found you talked quite fast at the beginning, but at the end you had slowed down to a better pace. Cheers from Montréal.

New sub. The first KZfaqr that understands what hyperlapse is really supposed to be. ("there were no clouds") So far I'm tired of those videos with cars and people with sped up motion. In my opinion it only should be shown when one wants to demonstrate the process of building something to display the progress.

Thanks for the comment. Yeah, it was for this reason that I didn't actually put any hyper lapse footage in the video...I don't really have any that can do it justice. I'll be in the mountains in January though, staying in a hut up amongst the peaks and I've got some ideas for hyperlaspes at sunrise as the light first illuminates the tops of the mountains. Yeah, a couple of people have mentioned that, but in my experience most stuff is built to survive a bit of dry sand. I’ve been photographing on the coast for almost 15 years and using drones for about 3 and never had sand cause a problem. This video was made a year ago and the drone is still functioning like new....this morning I launched it from wet grass in the Dolomites. I don’t baby stuff and I’ve never had a single equipment failure so it’s really no big deal. Glad you liked the video, and thanks for the comment. All the best

Fantastic video! Thanks for putting in all the legwork to make it easier for beginners like me to get started correctly! Just one thing. Isn't that sand that hitchhiked into your bag about the worst thing imaginable for your camera gear? And on that, what is the best way to clean the lens of both the camera and sensors? Thanks again!!
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video. As for the sand...I know, I know...It was something I did just for the video because I had to use my hands to operate the camera. Rest assured thought it was only there for a couple of seconds and all the sand was blown off when I got home. I've been out shooting this coast for over 15 years so I'm used to dealing with sand on gear. So, to answer your question, for cleaning the camera and lens body I use a blower brush and a microfibre cloth. For the glass in the lens, I've found these Zeiss wipes to be absolutely brilliant www.amazon.com/Zeiss-Pre-Moistened-Lens-Cleaning-Wipes/dp/B00GL64QG6/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1543148556&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=zeiss+lens+cleaning+wipes&psc=1 Cleaning the sensor is a tricky one, and it's something I've toyed with making a video about, but it's one of those things that people get very upset about if they see someone doing it differently than them, and I don't want to recommend something and then someone have an accident. There are a number of good solutions, but for all of them you have to be careful and do it in a well lit and dust free (or as dust free as possible) environment. Of all the things I've used, I find the Eyelead gel stick www.amazon.com/Zeiss-Pre-Moistened-Lens-Cleaning-Wipes/dp/B00GL64QG6/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1543148556&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=zeiss+lens+cleaning+wipes&psc=1 Again, you have to use it really lightly and apply very little pressure.

It’s generally touch to focus, As its shooting so wide and with a drone its rare that anything is close to the lens, touch focus will give you front to back sharpness

Hi Weaver, thanks for the comment, glad you like the videos. Did I mention links for free PP LUTS? I don't actually know how to make LUTS and my grading is very basic (increasing contrast with whites, blacks, shadows and highlights, then a little saturation).

I also had a Mavic Air first and I loved it but the Wifi connection also gave me issues. I tried out a Mavic 2 Zoom and immediately returned the Mavic Air to Best Buy slight restocking fee but the two drones are such a different experience from each other.

Thanks for the comment. I loved a lot of things about the Mavic Air, but I just didn't have faith in the connection. I got dropped signals so many times when the drone really wasn't far away, but with the Mavic Pro/Mavic 2 I've never had a single drop even flying a few kilometres away

Great video Andy. Side note, curious to what bag you’re using at the end of the video? It looks like a Deuter with a rear entry panel....
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, glad you liked the video. The bag is a Deuter...it's a Freerider Pro 30 with an F-stop Small Pro ICU inside. There are links to them both in the description. Bags designed for skiing and snowboarding etc often seem to have rear access so you can drop them in the snow. The Osprey Kamber is the same. I have quite a long body and most camera bags I've found aren't all that comfortable...they seem to be designed for people with shorter bodies.

Hi, I took my g9 with me last year when climbing via ferratas in the Dolomites. Got some great shots. We’re going back this year hoping to do some hut to hut journeys. Thankyou for putting your vid up. You’ve captured some really impressive views with the pro 2. Any advice for a complete novice taking a drone into the Dolomites with em?
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Simon, I'd love to have a go at the via ferratas, they must be amazing. There's no specific info about using a drone in the Dolomites, just to be aware of how much the wind changes around the peaks and just small changes of altitude can bring the drone into wind conditions that are very different. Having said that, the Mavic deals with wind really well.

Great review as you noticed a lot of similar things I’ve noticed. I just recently sold my original Mavic Pro. Hasn’t flown it since flying the new MP2 for a few months and then when I test flew it for the buyer I was amazed at home much smoother it flew compared to the MP2. It was less jerky in regular mode and seemed to fly better in my opinion because of that. I was looking to see if there are settings to get similar results out of the MP2 without having to use tripod mode?

That's a bummer you've had problems with the WiFi on the Mavic Air. 2 weeks ago I was flying out near the mountains here in Cedar City, Utah and view distance was really far and clear. I figured I was about 1.5 miles from the mountains before they inclined. It was a bit windy too. I went pretty far, like I knew I was pushing the limit, so I hurried and turned around and headed back. There were a few small drop outs on the screen but i just made sure to keep the handheld point towards the drone. So I landed her and took out for home. I got to looking at the footage when I got home and I was going through some settings too. I noticed a video clip that said 14,500 feet in distance... I was like... WHAT?! That can't be right can it? I inspected further and sure enough, the drone had traveled almost 3 miles away. It's 2.6 miles. I was like dude! I better pay closer attention. Plus, I don't know how to calculate on the fly feet to miles. But it sure captured some sweet footage.

Great video as always Andy. You recommend shooting in D-Log. Do you overexpose your footage when shooting in D-Log to avoid noise in the shadows? This is common when shooting in Log but I've heard mixed reports about results from D-Log. Thanks!

@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, thanks for the comment. So far I've not found a need to increase exposure when shooting in D-Log and I've not noticed any particular noise in the shadows...but I've not extensively tested whether getting more light in improves the images or not, so I can't really say

Good insight. Like you I had the AIR, I still have it for certain uses being os compact, but the Pro2 I have just moved onto - yes 2 years behind everyone else!You mentioned in the video something you had found for taking out the horizon curvature caused by barrel distortion from the lens. I haven't been able to find what you mentioned. Could you iterate it please? Or even put a link here in the comments? Many thanks.

Thanks, it's actually so long since I made this video I honestly can't remember now. Distortion can be removed in Premiere Pro quite easily. You just go to Effects > Distortion and there are various presets, or you can adjust it yourself manually. I've actually recently switched to the Air 2S which does a much better job with distortion in camera

Hi Andy, thanks for the womderful videos. I recently bought a Mavic 2 Pro and I'm finding that the colours in my still images are a bit off! The greens and yellows look a bit on the neon side. What settings do you use for still images? Any tips? Was thinking I could maybe create a colour profile for the camera using a Colour Checker Passport? Cheers Keith

Can you give advise on best low light or even dark settings for the mavic 2 pro?
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how dark it is, but you want the widest aperture you can get, so f2.8. The slowest shutter speed, which I believe is 1/30 if you're shooting 24 fps, and then the lowest ISO you can use without it being too dark. A higher ISO will let in more light, but also more grain. I've used the M2P up to ISO1200 and been happy with the output

Should add that H.265 is a CPU hungry codec. Not all computers are capable of editing H.265. Try it before you use it for a shot you really need to use.

Thanks for a great video Andy! From what I have researched after recently buying the M2Pro, you advice is spot on. Love the clips you presented as well. The one question I have is how do you get the exposure so good? Are you just using the histogram, or do you check the EV read-out as well, and keep that within certain tolerances? Please let me know. Bye from Canada!
