_______
In this video I talk about the soft, smeary, footage that can show up you DJI Mavic Pro footage with certain settings. These shots were done with D-CineLike color profile +1, -1, 0. Firmware v01.03.0600
The conclusion is that the Mavic applies a very poor in-camera noise reduction to the shadows at sharpness settings below +1. I suggest leaving sharpness settings at +1 for all golden hour shooting. If shooting at noon with lots of trees, sharpening at 0 may be preferable because there will be very little shadows in the image, and this will avoid an over-sharpened look.

Hey, I’m not sure why but when I shoot in 4k and export on a 1080P TL my footage looks soft compared to the raw footage. My raw footage is nice is crisp but when I export the video in 1080p it’s soft but if I export at 4k its great. Why is that? Thanks

Thanks for taking time with this. I never had as many issues dialing in my settings on my p3, p4, Inspire as I have had with the Mavic. Everywhere you go people are taking about the sharpening value and you get a range of -3 to well +1 in this case. Your tests clearly show that from -1, 0 to +1 have drastic changes. Thanks for sharing and Ill test +1 here soon..

Thank you!!! I thought I was going insane. I was about to return my Mavic because I thought there was something wrong with the camera. All of the tutorials I have seen for "best settings" have had the sharpness at -2 to -3. I would have never thought my splotchy haze was due to that setting. I live in Washington state, so I was getting a lot of haze with random trees. Thanks, again!

I personally like +1, -1, 0 with Cinelike profile - but thats because it matches closely to my Canon 1dxII settings, not because it's better than some of the other ones. You can pretty much use ART, LOG, or Cinelike, and get them to the exact same end result through grading.

I'm testing noise profiles right now. The update will go into more depth on how the Mavic camera works. It's very strange, and they've had to make a lot of comprimises to stuff it into such a small package. I'll explain how the next steps to post process after shooting at +1 sharp, and compare 2.7k and 4k.

Oh and your 2.7k mavic footage looks great. Any reason to choose it over over 4k?
@shawn3d
@shawn3d 7 жыл бұрын
The Film Poets thanks buddy. Well the reason is that the 2.7k is far more superior in quality. There is far less compression blocking and more detail than 4k even when it gets upscale do to 4k. I did the side by side comparison test on low contrast areas and the 4k lacked detail where the 2.7k you can actually see far more. Try it and you will see. Blows my mind. So essentially it's also an easier workflow to deal with the lower resolution. Then just use instant HD plugin to uprez the file to 4k if you want to. The results are far better my friend

Gilad Langer thank you buddy, yeah been trying to tell people till I'm blue in the face about this. Where this misconception came in was when Phillip Bloom(who I highly respect) made a claim that -1sharpness was the way. From there it spread like wildfire. I believe It was a mistake from his part which can happen to the best of us. I have also chatted to him about this and we bounced some thoughts around it and eventually the conversation phased out. Again the internet is a place where misinformation can spread badly and it's important to look at things objectively 👌😎

I suggest these settings : +1 sharpening (to disable in-camera NR), especially during golden hour, followed by noise reduction in post to address any over sharpened look. If you're shooting at noon with the sun overhead, 0 sharpening may be preferable because most of the image will bright enough to avoid the in-camera NR that takes place in the shadows.

What do you suggest for the Color Profile? D-Cinelike? What contrast and color settings do you use? Thank you! :)
@thefilmpoets
@thefilmpoets 7 жыл бұрын
I like D-cinelike with -1 contrast, 0 saturation, and of course +1 sharpening. I like this because it matches our Canon 1dxII profile nicely, and I can treat them with the same global color grade. D-log gains about 1 stop of extra DR and can look nice as well, but you trade off a bit of color information.

Hey, Thank's for the great tutorial. So why is everyone on youtube saying -2 -2 -2 or -2 -1 -2 (C,S,S) for all shots ? and there video, look clear ? really don't know what's the right way to go. I am heading to my mayamar soon and I was hoping you could help me with pre setting my Maverick pro up... I will be mainly filming temples sunrise, sunset and just after those hours. Also some city shots before midday and after midday. I also see that I need ND filters, like the poler pro cinema line ones. As they are all that people are talking about.(on here youtube) I am also wanting to join my Canon SLR clips up with drone footage. Any tips on matching them all together. I think the answer to these questions would tick a lot of boxes, for a lot of people. thanks for your time, G
@thefilmpoets
@thefilmpoets 7 жыл бұрын
Thats a lot to cover for a YT comment, but I'd say that those peoples videos aren't sharp in the shadows. I can see it in everyones footage most of the time. Take a good look. The polarizer/ND filters in the description are great. Try them out. For matching to DSLR, that all depends on your dslr settings. I'd suggest matching the mavic to that footage if you don't want to grade them separately.
@coffe11
@coffe11 7 жыл бұрын
@Gary Chesters: The idea behind -2 sharpness is to add the sharpness in the postproduction, because the computer is (with your help) better at it then the soft/hardware in the Mavic. BUT... many lately realised that there is an unwanted filtering to hide the noise building up in dark areas of the picture. So when you shoot sunsets, evening or early morning you will probably run in to issues due to a overfiltering of the image. The Mavic does a very very bad job at this filtering. So by choosing +1 sharpness you obviously switch of any filtering. Now you have a slightly oversharp image. This doesn'T give you a cinematic look, but it is much better then a non usable washed out watercolor like look. And you can use software like Neat Video to reduce the noise+oversharpening and make your video look great. Some of us use professional monitors to see the video while editing and there all those issues become very obvious. So for your Myanmar travel: Yes, get ND filters or ND+Polarizer combinations. Polar Pro is one of many distributor. Be aware to buy some that you can leave on during calibration process. And check local laws if you want to avoid troubles. uavsystemsinternational.com/drone-laws-by-country/myanmar-drone-laws/

*Edit* The image does flicker, and after doing more test I can tell that it flickers because of the noise pattern. *I now strongly suggest Neat Video because it minimizes the flickering noise of the sensor*
@mangomanster
@mangomanster 7 жыл бұрын
I played with neatvideo for several hours tonight. I walked away with the impression that the minimum setting of 1 frame for temporal noise reduction was best. It's too strong for my tastes at 2 frames, but if I turn it off I'm relying completely on spatial noise reduction and I don't think it does as accurate a job. I have my spatial settings at 15% for the luma channel and 20% for each of the chroma channels. Curious what settings you will use.
@mangomanster
@mangomanster 7 жыл бұрын
I should add that I'm also adding sharpening back in using Neatvideo. I think 15-20% if I remember right. I also did a noise sample from my white refrigerator in my house slightly under-exposed.
@thefilmpoets
@thefilmpoets 7 жыл бұрын
The temporal noise reduction setting just sets how many frame before and after each frame is analyzed before NR is applied, it shouldn't effect the NR amount. I use higher settings like 30% for luma. Also, experiment with the edge smoothing setting to further reduce over sharpening.
@mangomanster
@mangomanster 7 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly, temporal settings do affect how much NR is applied. I was happy with my footage's sharpness but I will experiment with the edge smoothing.

so this is the reason mavic pro has soft footage even in infinity focus. they need to do a software update and give us the option to turn off in camera noise reduction so we can record at 0 sharpness without it.
@thefilmpoets
@thefilmpoets 7 жыл бұрын
The mavic's infinity focus is soft because it's not really infinity focus. I think it's going past infinity. Just tap a spot about 2/3 into the scene and you'll be fine. This sensor is so small you're not going to get shallow DOF unless at macro focus.

agreed, my GoPro 5 has no focusing issues because it is locked to infinity, the Phantoms are also locked to infinity with no issues. Drones do not carry telephoto or Zoom lens, no reason to have this focusing system on it.

Thank you so much for the sharpening advice. I was afraid there wasn't any way of getting around the softness in parts of my video. Wish I would have known this before my Iceland trip.

Nice tip! I could not put my finger on why some of my footage looked so soft in some parts but not in other parts in the same shot. This explains it. Subscribed.

Great video, I had discovered this trick about 1month ago while browsing youtube "Mavic Settings" until I couldn't stand it anymore ha! Eagerly waiting for Part 2, and how to properly adjust in post.

Excellent video! I shoot real estate photography with the P3P but recently have been debating going to Mavic Pro in order to simplify my gear load. MLS compresses so much of the image that I have no need to do the 1" sensor on the P4P. Your voice audio is excellent by the way, definitely makes for watching your video much more pleasing than others. I'm going to watch a few more of your videos, you may have a new subscriber coming your way ;)

You're a lifesaver! I went on my honeymoon last year with 0 (or less)sharpening and a bunch of the footage came out soft like you showed. Super disappointing when I came back to edit it. Not all of it was bad but lost waaay more than I wanted haha. Thank you for saving my future videos

Would love to see, as you mentioned, a comparison between 4K & 2K. Really struggle to see what really is the best settings. Subscribed and hopefully you will get a video out regarding this. Great work with this, as others I´ve been using -2 etc until now.

Oh wow - thank you for figuring this out! Been driving me nuts and I thought it was related to encoding rate on 4K video. Some trees have nice sharp edges, and some look like fuzzypotatoes. Ug! I've Watched so many videos trying to figure out how to fix this and everyone says to dial sharpness DOWN to -1 or lower. Never even occurred to me to try it the other way. Wow! Definitely inspires me to drop my preconceived notions when I get my next drone. Thanks again!
