Good job! On the while balance your selecting method is good for stills however if your doing video and a cloud comes over you'll want to be in auto so as the cloud moves in there is an immediate re-balance and your not required to break the shot for adjustments. Great tips on camera settings. I shot some video yesterday in auto and no filter. I watched this video last night along with you filter video. Today I went to the same location and duplicated many of the same shots again with your settings and an ND16 filter (sunny day at the beach). The difference in the quality of the video was amazing. Colors that were dark and muddy yesterday came out bright and natural today. Thanks for the great info.

Hi Timothy. Thank you for this video and certainly other videos as well. You're very insightful, knowledgeable, and very informative. My settings are exactly like yours because I completely trust your judgment, and also because I'm by no means knowledgeable with video/camera settings. That being said, regarding your 'Question of the Day' - I would prefer beautiful settings straight out of the Mavic, as I do not intend to do any post-production whatsoever. My question is, what would be some setting changes - if any - that you would make to address this? Thank you greatly.

If you're in the US, you should be using 60hz. These settings are meant to match the cycle of AC current, as artificial lighting is actually flashing on and off at that rate. Not an issue while filming outside for the most part.

Good info! A quick note to anyone dealing with the issue of needing .MOV when you have .MP4 or vice versa. This is one of those cases where you can simply enable your computer to edit filename extensions and then just rename your .MOV file to .MP4 or vice versa and you're done. No re-encoding necessary. You're welcome!

Man I just Discovered you today. I love your tutorials on how to use this tool, Mavic Pro! But to answer your question I would love my footage dialed in to come straight off of the card and look as good as it can’t. That is only because I do not have a post production software of any kind, as I do move towards editing I would love as much room as possible to do whatever I like to the image or video that I see fit so I hope that answers your questions because I really do love your tutorials and how simple you make them to the Lehman like me so keep it up I subscribed and I get your notifications and look forward to how you do your editing and what editing software you use which I think you said you use Mac I was told by several videographers that the best one is Premier Pro if I had my choice I would love to get everything Mac it just seems like a more user-friendly platform. Thank you Nate Pate, Naples Florida

Hi Timothy - I'm a new subscriber to your channel and really like the content.. I've only had the Mavic Pro for a few weeks and have struggled with the camera settings up to now. I have a 2011 Macbook Pro which won't display 4K at its native resolution so what are your thoughts on settings for shooting video in 1080p with minimal post production as my machine can't handle anything bigger? I've also just bought the PolarPro ND filters based on your review but waiting for a decent days weather here in the UK before I fly it again.. I may be waiting some time :-) Cheers Rob.
@TimothySunday
@TimothySunday 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob. Thanks for subbing. Have you tried shooting ad 4k and then making your actual editing project in 1080? You can do this in Final Cut Pro X and then select "use proxy" when importing footage and it will make it so that your mac can handle the footage. Render times will still be long. If that doesn't work for you then shoot 1080 and go with the fps for the look you desire.

When filming video's say Realestate, what is the best way to keep lighting to Not fluctuate going from a dark area to say the bright white sky? Seems like in manual, you'll get a nice color based on your starting point but will either get blown out with a bright sky or vice versa. In auto it will adjust but then you get and see that change in the clip. Is it all a matter of post production?
@PCBVVideos
@PCBVVideos 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for posting. I was most interested in the Style and Color settings. I typically shoot 2.7k because my old computer can't handle 4k (and barely 2.7), and D-Log -1,-1,-2. You recommend Normal and kind of glaze of D-Cinelike without a mention of D-Log. I'm curious why. I'm still flip-flopping between the two, D-Cinelike and D-Log, and experimenting with Style settings. I do post in Premiere Pro, and typically shoot with a filter (ND16 for sunny or ND4 cloudy). I've heard 'The Pros' tend toward D-Log, but that Mavic's D-Log isn't very good so people tend toward D-Cinelike if they intend to enhance the footage in post. However, I've read that the last couple of firmware updates upgraded D-Log. Unfortunately I've also been reading a lot of negatives about the latest firmware update regarding flying issues so I haven't updated yet. Egad, so many things - LOL.
@TimothySunday
@TimothySunday 7 жыл бұрын
+Don Vanderloo I don't like the d-log from the Mavic. D-cinelike is ok but I tend to not color grade super hard. I try to have natural colors. And most of my audience doesn't know color grading yet so I steered clear of it. If I do a lot of color grading on a shoot I use d-cinelike. Also be careful with sharpness to -1. I've found out that doing so engages the Mavic's built in noise reduction and ruins the image quality. +1 is the best. I need to make a new video to update that. I'm also holding off on updates right now since I heard about the bugs.

Thanks Timothy great info, however I'm still a little confused with "taking photos" my videos I think I got down and understand all that, however when you switch from video mode to photo mode... do you keep the same ISO and shutter from your video setting? 1/60 for example? Also when I'm shooting in 4K the video on phone looks great in the air! However when I switch to take a picture the screen then looks like crap and can't really tell if it is a good shot or not, not sure if you noticed that ? Thanks again
@TimothySunday
@TimothySunday 7 жыл бұрын
All bets are off when it comes to photos. No need to worry about the 180 rule. Adjust your shutter speed as needed for correct exposure and try to use the lowest ISO possible. I'm also going to have to update this video because the -3 on sharpness is not good. It actually engages denoising...I'll cover it in a video next week but you should run it at 0 or +1 on sharpness.
@SoapyGolem

Thanks, that's the hard part what ISO I should use but I know it all depends what I take a picture of.. still learning

I understand the obstacles but at best we're Ifly once I hit between five and 6000 feet I begin to lose signal. Furthest I've ever been able to fly out was just over 8000 feet. Hi Tim, I just thought you might want to know; 60hz is the proper setting for North America - as that's what our electrical grid is here. 50hz is Europe and many Asian countries standard. The generators at all US/Canadian power plants spin at 60 hz. If you are in Europe and are set at 60hz, you'll see flicker from flourescence, incandescent lights because you are not matched up to compensate for 50hz.

Recently learned that the mavic will add its own denoising if you set the sharpness to 0 or below. this causes a loss of detail, and blurry images. Its better to set the sharpness to +1 and remove some of the sharpness later with proper noise reduction in post. also due to the mavics codec you get better quality by recording at 2.7k and up-scaling.
@cython5150
@cython5150 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! A few quick questions as I new to the DJI ecosystem. Do you guys think DJI will address the de-noising in a future firmware update based on past experience with other drones?? Do you mean 2.7k upscaled to 4k is better quality than straight up 4k?

I enjoy your videos, Timothy. But one quick correction: for custom color settings (6:30 on your video), higher °K settings go toward the blue, lower toward the red. For example, 3200°K is tungsten-balanced (red-orange), and 5600°K is roughly daylight (bluish-white). Easy to remember when you understand that a lightbulb is redder than the sun's surface, because it has a lower temperature. Blue stars are hotter than red ones; white-hot is hotter than red-hot. Somewhat confusing, because blue is generally associated with coolness, but paradoxically for color temperatures, blue is hotter than red.

+Larry Rhodes you are 100% correct. I had to rewatch my video to see my mistake. I knew this but I just misspoke while recording. This was my fourth try to record this whole video as my three other attempts all had camera issues.

oh yes, I would still adjust those settings. I meant these settings should be used with and without filters. filters only change shutter and iso

Thanks for the tutorial. I tried to improve my settings and noticed that for 3840x2160 and 2720x1530 I have only the options 24fps & 25 fps. I figured out it is because the App is preset to PAL (living in EU). Do you have any idea why PAL allows only 25 fps instead 30 fps?
@ChromaSubsampling
@ChromaSubsampling 7 жыл бұрын
There's a fairly involved technical answer to why PAL has a max 25 fps. Essentially, it's derived from the progressive scanning technique used in PAL and NTSC transmission (60Hz in North America and 50Hz in Europe). As PAL and NTSC use interlaced frames (odd lines on the first pass, even lines on the second pass), the max fps is calculated as half the progressive scan frequency. If you're interested, you can read more on Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL).

Thank you, for your helpful response. Since NTSC and PAL are analog TV transmission techniques, do they still make sense for digital video transmission and processing? Can I safely use either setting on my Mavic?
@ChromaSubsampling
@ChromaSubsampling 7 жыл бұрын
Harald Moehser You're right, it's less of an issue these days mainly because modern televisions handle either format. You're safe to use either on the Mavic - I tend to favour NTSC as it offers recording in the slightly higher framerate.

Good channel. I enjoy your videos. It's minor point but your description of the Kelvin color scale is backwards. Lower numbers are warmer while higher numbers are cooler. No big deal really but it may confuse someone.

Great video although I'd like to disagree with you on your sharpness settings. Taking your sharpness down causes the mavic to apply in-camera noise reduction which computers and editing software do a much better job with. I found results to be best by simply leaving the sharpness at 0 or even bumping it up to +1 then applying noise reduction later on in the editing software. Give it a shot ;)

Timothy, you gotta use that histogram. Or at least turn on the Over Exposure Warning. You have to know if your shot is clipping. Hard to take your camera settings seriously without these, along with shooting in normal mode.
@TimothySunday
@TimothySunday 7 жыл бұрын
+Roy Gregorio those are both great tools, and I think you're thinking of Zebras instead of Over exposure warning. I also have a pretty good eye for exposure so I don't need those on all the time. Especially when using a phone to fly with, I value the screen space and trust my eye. If I need to nail consistent exposure across multiple shots for hdr or panos and the like, then I use those tools. Thanks for watching Roy!

Little "pro" tip from an amateur drone user for you :) The NTSC setting doesn't mix with the 50Hz Anti-Flicker setting. As a standard rule, you always want to set the multiplier of your framerate as your Anti-Flicker value. So 25fps (PAL) goes with 50Hz, and 30fps (NTSC) goes with 60Hz. This has to do with the overall rate of your electricity grid. For example the flicker of US lightbulbs would be in the NTSC range (30, 60, 120Hz, etc.), where as in Europe those flicker rates are mostly devisible by 25 (25, 50, 100Hz, etc.). Greets
@njfr9389

only problem is that pal doesn't give 30fps but ntsc does :) i'm in europe but use ntsc just to get 30fps on 4K etc

NJ FR It's all about personal prefference anyway ;) 30fps, or abowe look a bit off to me. Like some kind of brazilian sope opperas... i like the more cinematic kind of look of 25fps. But as I mentioned, it's just about personal prefference. The anti flicker modes on the other hand SHOULD be used in the corect way to minimize any strange flickering in lights, or screens, etc.

Why use any of the settings in the drone if you’re editing them in a computer ? Isn’t this essentially not the best settings then ? Because you’re using the computer to get the best settings ? I would agree with your choices however, it appears as though the computer is being used to enhance something you’re not getting with the camera of the drone alone ? Therefore it really can’t be the best settings of the drone.

Anti flicker setting Should be 60 HZ for the states, and 50 HZ for Europe and abroad. Our a/c electrical system in the USA is 60 cycle. Filming lights at night is where this will show up on video if not set properly.

That’s not at all true. .MP4 is a codec just like .mov. It has nothing to do with what OS you’re using. It’s more about what kind of compression and settings you want or don’t want baked into your files.
