Dji Mini 3 Pro - Bird Strike by Crow and Magpie 2

While Dji Mini 3 Pro has FPV mode, ie camera tilts while banking. Shame it only does it flying forward. Won't do it flying backward which is how I filmed these bird strikes.
By the way, the whole footage is raw without editing except the very last frame (nop, the camera didn't go mono-chrome / binary mode on it own. :D). I have no idea why the camera appeared banking and hard banking again. Let me know if you had the same experience or you know why, please. I see no damage or marks to the body or camera or propellers. As stated, Dji mini 3 prod doesn't do FPV mode when flying backward.

I don't know if someone has already said this but: If you are ever in a bird attack, switch to sport mode and go *directly up* as fast as possible

Great footage and you're braver than me, when birds have a go like that, I fly straight up to avoid them, then straight home to ensure I can fly another day.

@@davidwingyinng You're not stupid!! Sometimes you can't help being caught in this situation, however it is true that you should fly straight up as birds can't match that speed. Just wondered why you didn't land asap. Stupid is making the same mistake twice. Glad your mini is ok. I have the old Evo1 monster. If a bird strikes the Evo. It might crash, but that bird will be missing a wing or two.

Thank you. At times, it actually refuses to climb perhaps because of wind gust or bird underneath affecting the obstacle sensor. That said, I would in sports mode hence supposedly no obstacle avoidance..

which is what you SHOULD do! This isn't just aggravating wildlife in their environment, but also endangering them. Especially if they try and attack it and get a whack from the props. What you do is exactly what I would do. Well done for being more responsible.

Impressive that you avoided the hard rise and stayed around to film them and made what I have to say was a very spirited attempt to outfly them ! You got some great footage there that not many people would stay around to get !

I've had several similar experiences with seagulls. It seems like they want to intimidate the drone and scare it off. They get as close as they dare but don't actually strike. Of course that could be famous last words 🙃

Thank you. Yes, looks like birds seldom actually strike the drone although of late I get a lot of bees attacking the drone as well. Amazing how fast they can fly and pretty yucky to find them sliced up by the props and cover the drone with body parts..

on the DJI Mini 3 Pro, the lastest firmware lets you 'jump' (through wormholes) as part of the obstacle avoidance system.

The best solution to avoid the attack is not to Fly straight or down but to Fly up because is more difficult for birds to follow the vertical speed of the drone instead if you Fly down. So fly up then away and land away the terrritory of the birds

That was indeed EPIC! It was like watching an interception between the drone and the birds When I fly my mini2 it is my worst fear that the birds or seagulls will try to attack it, as they see it as a threat (no wonder) At least you landed safely :)

WOW!...great shots. I've never seen a bird so "in your face" as that. I wasn't aware that it's better to fly straight up either so I'll deffinitely remember that one. After ascending fast I'd be landing pronto. A blazing heap of drone uncontrollably crashing could be dangerous in the burbs...saw a bunch of ppl playing a game in one shot. I'd rather scoot to play another day. But great that u showed us

Excellent job avoiding being down by those pesky birds! My Mini 3 Pro hasn’t attracted the attention of birds, nature rangers or birds so far. Fingers crossed!

Great footage mate. I was worried you were going to lose the drone in battle. I lost my first drone to cranky crows. Unfortunately for me it crash landed into salt water. To make things worse I didn’t even get to record the battle. I’m now always a bit paranoid when ever I’m near trees. Well done. 😃👍

Thank you. So far, my experience is that crows fly near the drone but don't really attack it. On the other hand, magpies are hideous! They are attacking me - diving at me and my drone is covered with bugs recently! Yuck!

Just so everyone knows, it’s best to fly straight up in sport mode (up to the legal limit if you are trying to stay in compliance). Otherwise, if you are low enough, just land. Don’t keep flying unless you like throwing $1k in the trash.

Great footage ! I’ve had a few close encounters with seagulls and oyster catchers being territorial. I always land just in case they damage the camera. Although the props on my Mavic air 2 would probably provide a bird with a good skin fade 😂

Was filming a couple years ago with my Mavic Pro near my high school and a couple seagulls were attacking me with the same results as you... the MP was awesome. They didn't want any part of my stellar flagship, The Beast!!!

Great video. I don't usually like loud music in videos but that fitted perfectly. My mini 3 pro has been harassed by seagulls, I won't say attacked as they did not touch it. I think they were trying to scare it away. As others have said go straight up to get away.

A seagull once tried taking my drone down, literally dived onto it and missed many times because I changed direction in the last 2-3s before it hit me with sports mode Then I went up, confused it a bit and then landed it on my hand, it didn't want to stop attacking until the drone finally got close enough to me, these were the scariest 2 minutes of my life lol

I've been in similar situations many times, and most of the time, if you run, they chase you. If you chase them, they run. not all the time...but it works for me so far

I think they are similar to humans in some ways, but in these cases, I think most of their actions are to protect their territory, eggs, chicks, etc.

I've had experiences with seagulls, they aren't as persistent as crows but damn annoying with their huge beaks. These magpies were really glued to you huh!

Thank you. Magpies seem to have no concept of danger or fear. They are so smart! Nowadays they are attacking me - diving at me and that is so much more disruptive to flight than attacking the drone! I wish I could slap $26,400 fine on each for interfering with drone operation.

Thank you. Honestly I was quite nervous when the camera tilted. No photoshopping in my video except the last segment using a theme. The camera did tilt and tilted even worst for a while soon after. In facts, it felt once momentarily but thank God it regained flight. Shame I wasn't recording that time. 😅

Thank you. Not at all. 4k 60fps, sports mode and pretty much dropped smoothness to min for quick yaw. Camera on auto and of course set max altitude to 120m to stay within legal limit. No filters. I would love a wide-angle filter but unable to get one yet. Appreciate any suggestions.

I had the same thing happen tonight with 2 crows. I was just flying in my yard and they went nuts. I pulled my Mimi 3 Pro to the ground before could down it for me. They were making a lot of noise and very aggressive. Crazy bird indeed!

I flew my Mini 3 Pro a couple of days ago. A few minutes in and a flock of feral homing pigeons started using the drone as a focal point for their flying. I really thought it was only time before one clipped the drone. Thankfully it didn't happen.

looks local - is that Brisbane in the background? - appreciate the warning, maybe the two eyes on the front? - I just got the mini 3 yesterday, might look out for some skins. flame skins seemed to help with the air 2 but maybe I just got lucky. Great vid, thanks for sharing!

So far birds are my worst fear as a new drone flyer. On my first outing I had two birds of prey high overhead. I know they can see everything, so I was afraid to go too high. Then in some trees not far from my position were full of Grackles making a large amount of noise. I was just too spooked to continue on. Then the wind picked up suddenly and I just said hell with it, Im out. 😒

I had four Little Ravens (aka 'crows') chasing my drone at Black Rock last Tuesday. Pesky, but I just went out to sea and up high (to 100m) and they gave up. When I had finished the offshore shots, I returned home high then dropped quick.

Glue one of those tiny Firehouse super bright strobe lights to the rear of your drone and watch all those birds veer off and go away. The strobe puts them to fight every time, if you will pardon the pun.

Looks as though you have entered into the birds territory.... Their nesting area. They are trying to protect their young from an intruder into their territory. Move on down the road a little ways and let them raise their young in piece. By possibly hurting one or both of the parents you endanger the young not being taken care of and posibly ending the youngsters lives as well.
