"The coercive subscription pricing model is off-putting." Perfectly put. And the GoPro unreliability...my ears perked up when you said you never have that with the DJIs. I had the 11 on my shopping list but you've changed my mind. I was intrigued by the night mode/effects on the 11 but on second thought I have an S5 for that. DJI's drones have impressed so it's time to try their action cam. Excellent video as always.

Hi Steward and Alina, I posted a couple times on this to other YT’ers and same here on pricing. On pricing, DJI had priced A2 at $519 thinking they can do what Apple does with their pricing but consumers clearly responded by not buying it. When they discounted it to $359, it sold. So I don’t think they were competing with GP pricing, but realized that a repackaged A2 in plastic and no OLED screen for $329 is the “sweet spot entry pricing” and they got it this time. But to compare to GP11 is not apples-2-apples. I say this because: - the specs are what GP10 already has and priced at $350; and - as a subscriber, I’m offered $399 or a new person gets it for this price. So no more cancelling the subscription and then adding it on for a new GP. Easier for both sides. So there is $79 difference and now with 360 horizon lock in all modes except 4k120, 2.7k240, 1080 120/240 and only linear lens view, you don’t need the Max Mod lens which cost $70; and - 10bit now (not promised later) and better DR. What’s that worth?; and - 8:7 to reframe without IQ loss in 16:9 or 9:16 and reframing later (in firmware upgrade); and - Hypersmooth 5.0 + Reelsteady stabilization so for FPV shooters, this will give cinematic butterfly smooth videos Those above is what A3 does not offer. Even with 10-bit later, it gives no color banding in the skies but better DR will need to be tested. I would say for the average consumer, $329 is good value for money to have 4K24/25/30/50/60/100/120 shooting, deeper underwater without housing, magnetic quick release design, quick charging but I wouldn’t say battery advantage (as 1770mAh vs 1740mAh on Enduro has not been tested head on), better thermal mgmt or letting it run hotter, better lowlight, better UI/UX, better reliability, and better pleasing colors (my personal view). The reliability issue is because Nick or the marketing forces the engineers to come up with a new GP every 12mos which is too short of time to have a finished product. Give them 1.5-2yrs like DJI and I’m sure they can have more reliable finished products. And remove the legacy architectures that they have that DJI and Insta360 does not It’s boring that GP didn’t change the design on GP9/10/11 but you get to reuse all the accessories where A2 accessories cannot be used on A3. And worst, those A2 customers who paid $519 for it and A3 will get 10-bit will be even more pissed. If A2 doesn’t get this upgrade, I am sure they will consider deflecting to GP or Insta360. Anyways as a fan of tech, I’ll probably end up getting both but just want to give a different perspective when trying to comparing GP11 vs A3. Love your channel though. Got the DJI mic after all the heavy lifting you did on it and one of the first to talk abt it before others jumped on it. And agree with you that these brands pay for key influencers and so as a consumer, you really need to be informed before buying and being disappointed.

As a regular, non commercial Action cam user, my Gopro experience is much less than satisfying. Gopro continues year upon year with the same faults while asking for more and more money. I have friends who have various models, we ALL have system lock-ups across the various models while riding dirtbikes... not a few, all. The vision is always amazing, and the Gopro can provide some great footage, when it works. My Hero 8 was a replacement for a tired Sony X3000, but the Sony was a far better camera to use and in the modes I use them, equal to the H8. It would capture the same volume of data with 2 batteries that the H8 needs 4 to do. Yes, I could have 'upgraded' to a H9/10, but I would have needed to dump all my accessories and batteries and charger and start again. I'm going to keep the H8 for second viewpoint shots, perhaps on my feiyutech cable cam and step up to the DJI Action 3. Last note, the subscription to Gopro is the final deal breaker for me, it offers nothing except for the discount. They should just sell the camera at the same price.

As a fan of tech, what bugs me is when people invest a lot of their hard earn money and buy uninformed or don’t know how to use their gears, then blame the companies for their purchase. It become bias and they can’t appreciate that even when there is something good that the company does, because at this point it is emotional. Empathy-wise, understandable, but logically, not understandable. GP definitely has negative brand equity and some cleaning up work to do but no fault of their own. If I were them, I would design the GP12 like A2/A3 using their magnetic design, using better thermals, giving dual touchscreens, and make it beautiful like Apple and then charge like Apple. People will always complain and with everything better and what they want but “it’s too expensive!” But do what Apple did with the iP14 launch. They figured out that there are two buckets of consumers: 1) non-discerning; and 2) discerning. The former just wants the latest newness but couldn’t care less for the latest tech/specs and not willing to pay much more than last year’s pricing. So give them the A15 2021 chip, charge same price and make more profit off the existing cost base as better capacity utilization. The latter, they know what they want with the latest tech/specs and willing to pay for it. And they want the separation from those who cannot pay for it. So for GP, call it a GP11 at $329/$349 repackaged as GP10 specs (with 8bit) and a GP11 Pro with the latest and greatest tech. And I would change the life cycle of new releases from 12 to 18-24 months. That should solve for the reliability issues they’re facing delivering unfinished products. But if I’m DJI, it’s an uphill battle to play catch up as if this division does not make their sales quota, DJI mother company will not put more money into a losing division. They will focus on drones and other money makers. So they need to leapfrog GP with latest and best tech/specs and not last year’s tech like the A2 being repackaged. New are better thermals, fast charging case, and microSD cards and removable batteries are integrated. The downgrades are all plastic design (vs magnesium alloy) and regular LCD screens (vs OLED) My buyers guide advice: - if you can’t tell the difference in IQ, get A1/2/3 or GP7/8/9/10. It’s a lot cheaper and you won’t grade 10bit as it’s for social content or personal use. Reliability and budget are priorities; or - if you need the top IQ, then upgrade to GP11. You probably have a subscription and all the accessories from GP9/10 so there’s no need to get more bundles or spend more money. The cost will be $399, $70 more than A3 for more tech and IQ. Anyways, just one’s opinion here!

It will be interesting to see if DJI can take away GoPro's market share by that $329 price point. And if they do start to get a lot of traction, if GoPro will lower the price of the Hero 11 and get rid of the subscription plan. Great video Stewart, and thanks for sharing.

Very good summary. Valid points at the end. I have two Hero8's. I use them for my 4x4 related videos. Based on what you say it is not really worthwhile upgrading (especially since I use them in a stationary position). My biggest question will be how these two would compare to the X3? For me it will allow me to reframe (16:9 and 9:16), so I can use 1 clip and make Shorts and Long videos. Also since I am filming myself solo I can add some movement, whereas with any other camera I am sometimes running out of frame space if that make sense. My only concern is the quality of the 360 footage. I try to record everything in 4K and try not to crop in to much to maintain the quality.

Honest review that is appreciated. I am a big fan of DJI and it does what it meant out to do. The minor things that make Go pro 11 better are nothing to brag about and opinions are just that. I have the Dji action 3 and am loving it.

informative as always guys thank you, I have the Action 1 and still use it alot I would be interested in a Action 1 vs Action 3 video especially on video quality at 1080P or 2.7K, I also bought the Hero 10 at Easter and I am happy with it and its been the most reliable GoPro i have owned and so far zero battery pulls. I do find however that its all very well these camera's offering 4K 120FPS or 5.3K etc however my computer gear that I edit these videos in does not really cope with the H265 codec therefore I generally have to take 1080P/2.7K video just to make sure I am using the H264 codec.

for an action camera... ultrawide fov is a plus for action sports. The lightsensor still need to test it in the forrest tbh.. 15 minute 80% battery charge also very usefull if you dont want to buy the action pack. i rather have wider fov then more pixels.. 😁

preordered the DJI Action 3 myself. I can deal with the bad HDR if the compromise is never overheating which my GoPro does all the time. I also had nothing but issues with WiFi on my GoPro as well as cannot for the life of me figure out why they wouldn’t allow all frame rates in lower resolutions, why they disabled the MediaMod USB data transfer option, and so many other things. GoPro got better, as it should, it I’m leaving that system behind.

I have couple of questions: Does any of these cameras has combined video and photo mode? When it takes video and in the same time are doing photos (every x seconds)? This is the best review yet well explaint. Very good video. The truth is that go pro has better image quality but the truth is that this camera is extremely unstable, for this reason I would prefer a camera that I can say 100% works. I don't understand how gopro puts on the market a camera that is more expensive than the competition and that we all know has many problems, how come they think this will be sold?

Nice review, as always. But I am surprised you didn't mention the D-cinelike profile option. That should allow you to have more flexibility with color grading and especially with matching the look and feel with the drone footage.

Not everyone likes d-cinelike as it requires powerful pc to colour grade footage and why would I need to? Thats what I liked in Osmo action 1 is you need only to trim the clips and its ready to upload. If I wanted to make some colour grading I would buy mirrorless instead

Thanks very much, your review has put my unrest mind to rest ! I'm now waiting for 10Bit upgrade, then will decide for my purchase. Meantime, if GoPro11 price go down, I may consider as well. My only fear is now, GoPro11 confirm they had fix the heating issues so the camera stuck should ideally go away. Unless sometime share honest review, there is no way to verify this results.

My biggest issue with the GP11 is the new sensor and the 8:7 aspect. I find it incredible that this is being marketed as a plus. From a sensor that, as you note, is already smaller than the A3 you have to throw away great chunks of data in order to end up with a usable product that fits your target screen. To my mind crazy!!! Also what is good about horizon leveling at extreme angles and over the top (360)? How many purchasers need that? I almost all cases just hold the camera at a sensible angle for your purpose. What we need are good dynamic range in situations such as sunlight with shadows and far better low light performance. We get that with a larger sensor that doesn't throw away data unnecessarily. I say all this as a GP10 owner who also happens to have a DJI mini3P. Cheers from NZ, Andrew

I have the GoPro Hero 10 and the DJI Action 2. I definitely like the Hero 10 colors and lens better. The still photos, raw files edited in LRC, look great. But I preordered the DJI Action 3. I take 2 cameras when I go spearfishing. The DJI Action 3 has a faster startup than any action camera, from sleep to shooting. It has longer battery life (can't change the batteries in the ocean or safely on a beach). which matters a lot. It has a 16-meter depth rating. Where I go max depth is 10 meters, but occasionally 15. The Hero 10, without a cage never leaked at 10m depth. The DJI is better. I use the Action 2 mounted on my pneumatic speargun because it has no water ports that may leak and it is small. But it has a short battery life and can store only 25 min at 27K. Action 3 solves those issues. I could consider selling the Action 2 and just mount the Action 3 without a case on my speargun. I often go and don't shoot any fish, but I may film stingrays and else, using the speargun as a pole. Anyway, the GoPro Hero 11 does not add many features or usability advantages that I need. The DJI Action 2 lens distorts at the edges, and the footage has too much sharpening and more contrast. The GoPro Hero 10 has a better image quality. But both are good enough. Sometimes a longer battery life and depth rating matter more than the marginal IQ difference. It allows you to get shots you could not otherwise. Also, the DJI Osmo Action 1+ 3 quick switch button for presets is great, especially when in the water. The GoPro implementation is not as nice. Probably in Action 3 I can completely turn off the front screen, which I rarely need, and extend battery life further.

Good review and I agree w you on almost all points. But I dont think you can answer "is this the best action camera" without comparing the actual video footage produced.

I own a DJI Action 3, quite a good camera, I didn’t expect it to overheat shut down and stop recording after just under half hour recording , the battery was quite hot, still had plenty of power, but changed the battery and it switched on again. I never had this problem with a traditional HD camcorder, it never shut down, but was old hat.

Will be picking up the Hero 11 as I got two faulty HERO 10s in a row last Christmas and I've been holding on to all the accessories for nearly a year! The two things that I wanted added to a GoPro were 10-bit colour and a larger sensor so the Hero 11 ticks all the boxes for me.

Always like your analysis and in this case the portion of GoPro’s service company. I used to think that GoPro was the way to go because of gps capabilities but there are sooooooo many ways to include the gps data does that chipset justify the price difference to DJI, no. Thx again

I'm deeply unimpressed with Go Pro's "subscription" model. I've lived in an Adobe-free universe from the time they decided they rented software, rather than selling licences outright - and the idea of having to pay an annual subscription to get hardware at a fair price just raises my hackles.

It has a little less DR and currently with no 10bit, I think the GoPro just wins in pure image quality. But to the average user I think u can get both very close if u know what your doing

About the dynamic range performance where GoPro 11 clearly wins over Action 3. For me personally it feels like a dealbreaker but help me out here. Is that a sensor thing or is it possible for DJI to improve that in firmware?

I'd say the 'dynamic range' GoPro performance is more a question of colour profile treatment of midtones/shadows, saturation and noise reduction. There's a definite HDR look to GoPro shots which I'd say is really well executed and isn't too strong. The Action 2/3 picture is much more what you would expect from a 'normal' camera, i.e. if you have the choice to boost shadows/midtones in post, add saturation, or even add a gradient mask to the bottom half of the image. I'm sure DJI could replicate the GoPro look but have chosen not to. If DJI adds 10-bit colour it will help more advanced colour grading like this.

@@fdsaffff I have a Mini 3 Pro - which I love! I thought the Avata would be a good buy - but I found the FPV too weird, and it was difficult to handle with the Motion Controller. Lastly, once I flew it - I realized that I really couldn't find any use for it, especially where I live. I think if you wanna fly that thing, you need lots and lots of open space with no people around.

The best stores in Finland have 30 day return policy. So I can buy the product and if I'm not happy, I can return it. Simple is that, and It's amazing! So I never buy from the manufacturer's subscription or whatever BS. I want to buy the product which is "safe" to buy. Great review, thanks!

The Dji Action 3's reliability, fast charging, better price and mounting system are amazing but at the end of the day the GoPro 11's better image quality and exposure shifts make it a harder decision. If DJI can make a more detailed image closer to GoPros then its a no brainer, DJI for the win but tat the end of the day for me image quality is what I care about most...That being said idk if ill get either, the tech is one or two iterations from being where id like it to be but until then id probably just buy something a few years older for alot cheaper

Well. I bought the subscription for my hero7 silver. Needed a new battery. Now aside from the unlimited cloud storage, the subscription includes camera replacement. Yep. You can have your camera replaced up to two times no questions asked for a $79 exchange fee. Pretty cheap. The problem?? GoPro doesn’t make the hero 7 anymore and they can’t replace it. Their solution? Send me a hero 9 with an extra battery instead. And oh yeah, they waived the 79$ fee

I have so many GoPro cameras, but have been waiting for the DJI to compare. Biggest problem with GoPro is footage loss and locking up. I ordered my DJI and looking forward to it.

I’ve always been happy with my GoPros image quality, but what has made me sell them every time is the reliability with the exception of the Hero session line (rip). I’m happy that the action 2 is basically a new hero session, and the action 3 is centered on reliability.

I just got a gopro and it froze once and one time wasn't turning on. No one talks about the unreliability issues that can happen. I think overall it's ok but I Def didn't expect it

Great review. After years and years for being a Gopro fanboy (6 camera bought) my allegiance is fading fast. I had to send a Hero 10 back, and am fed up of the unreliability of the cameras. Now, the 11 looks good, but I'll be looking at DJI

Great and unbiased video as always! BUT, most mountain bikers that go fast in and out of shadows always(?) use Gopros because of higher data rate and better image quality. DJI cameras have previously become mushy and create artefacts in these fast changing situations. Walking with a stick in the sunshine is a completely different scenario.

@@fdsaffff These overheating tests are silly, not a real world problem. The problem is when it is cold winter time and the camera freezes (pun intended 😆). Reliability can be a problem and random audio spikes is a problem too. But 99% it works and then the image is better.

Thanks Stewart, I was wondering what your thoughts would be for the Action 3. It seems, unlike Gopro, DJI listen to feedback from their customers and have come up with a winning package. I wanted to like the Action 2, but I mainly film 1st person Dirtbike videos with the cam mounted under the peak of my helmet. (to prevent snagging in the bush) The short duration and overheating issues of the A2 weren't going to work for me, nor would the added on power/SD block. I ended sticking with the flawed Hero 8 with the hard resets, dropped battery door, early file transfer issues etc. Looks like my next camera will be the Action 3 👌👌👌

I own a Gopro hero 9 and after watching a few comparison videos of the 9, 10, and 11, I will not be upgrading. Gain would be minimal and most people would never notice it. I also own an Osmo Action, the first one, and I am on the fence about upgrading that because of the Hero 9 that I own. I think I'll sit this one out.

It is acceptable to have lower price since action 3 have no GPS capability, I guess. Still stick on my Go Pro Hero 10. My first osmo action died just few months of service.

Never had any overheating with my Action 2. I use it as an action camera. With the Action 3 I agree that the small packaging details and features, thoughtful design elements at this price really is convincing to me. I’ve got a DJI Mini and a Pocket so you could say that I’m embedded in the system

I'm forever pissed at GoPro and will never buy anything with their name on it ever again. Still like my action 1 very much even though I hardly use it anymore. But this action 3 is far from the camera that I/we asked for, and I for one did ask DJI directly and specifically. I won't care about any of these so-called action cams until they finally start packing 1" sensors into them. I want better video quality, nay, I demand better video quality out of these things here in 2022! Cheers 🍻

Simple solution is just buy the Insta 360 one rs and have the versatile of both 360 and a normal lense for a cheaper price and in my experience the video quality is better depending on what lense you use

Long rant, reading not obligatory 😉 I bought the HERO 10 against my better judgement a year ago. Its so unreliable, I use it for vlogging, and I can do with out the distraction of having to toggle off wifi to get the preview to work, the faff of getting it off its mount to change the battery which doesn't seem to last even half an hour at 2.7k 60fps. I have the DJI mic which I love 🥰 though the GoPro with media mod occasionally messes up the audio 😡when I use it in conjunction. GoPro should take a lesson from DJI's customer service which is excellent 😁 My Osmo Action 3 should be here early October, it will come with the selfie stick and the battery case. I am so looking forward to it 🤣

I just bought the Hero 11 from GoPro and the camera was $377.99 plus the $49 for the subscription. So I think it was a decent buy for all you get with the stabilization, the 8:7 sensor and the 5,3K with 10 bit to boot.

Ya, GoPro hard reset. Something like 10%. DJI, hmm, haven’t had to do anything like that . . . yet. Have to agree with 100%. Action 3 is better designed and priced for an action camera. Always going to be compromises when selecting advanced software features, something has to give somewhere to get the advanced features. Know that going in and I think one will be happy with compromises DJI has chosen. I wish GoPro had done more fixing and less advancing though. I do rather like the basic imagery in GoPro.

I would prefer the Hero 11 , the subscription model is a no brainer, you get it for £150 less, cancel your subscription in 12 months time , and it does not cost you a penny more ! I have the osmo action 2 , it is a great camera, but I prefer GoPro, and have never had any freezing problems, from the hero 4 onwards !
