Comparison of the DJI Pocket 3 ND filters available from DJI and the Polar Pro Vivid Collection. See which one is better, easier to put on/off, which one offers polarization. If you shoot on Manual setting, you need ND filters.

Great video - I didn't see the Polar Pro when I bought the Neewer series. The one thing I like about the Neewer is they are variable and I can keep them on the DJI even when it is off. I saw some videos that the DJI filters must be taken off when powering the Osmo off.

There are soooo many ND filter choices. Both the Polar Pro and DJI filters need to be removed for the gimbal to return to a full closed position at shutdown. Glad you found the video helpful. Enjoy the Pocket 3 with your Neewer filters!

Great comparison Mark thank you for doing this one. I was just looking at what ND kit to purchase. It looks like there was a bit more clarity in the image as well when you had the polar pro ND filters attached vs the DJI filters. I agree it seems polar pro is superior at least from your comparison to the alternative.

Thanks for taking the time to compile this useful comparison. I currently own a variable ND set (6-9) and live in Greece where the sun is really bright. Now (April) I find that only 7 is adequate (meaning ND 128). Here's my problem and question: In some cases of clear blue sky, the variable ND creates an uneven sky surface. I mean it looks like one part of the sky is ok but the other half looks darker, as if there is a feathered wipe in the middle. I have heard that the PolarPro ND/PL have the same problem, while the non-PL PolarPro are ok. I think that I saw that when you turn the polarisation on, but I'm not sure. I'm torn between buying the non-PL and the "plain" ND filters that's why I would like to know. And a tip, if I may add: I found out that on mixed scenes with shadows and highlights using EV -1 (not -0,7) and variable ISO gives almost no burned highlights.
@markexploringnewstuff

I haven’t noticed the uneven sky when using the ND with polarizer. Maybe I’m not looking close enough but I have found the polarizer really helps with sky color. Thanks for watching. Greece is a beautiful place which I hope to visit someday.

@@markexploringnewstuff Thanks for the fast reply! I might go for the plain NDs since I already trust their brand for my Sony big camera and GoPro. If this helps, I find the same strong sun in Italy too (in summer) so for the fixed setting of the Osmo Pocket 3, I think only 7 (ND 128) is adequate. 5 is certainly not enough anyway. Hoping you will use the pocket 3 in Greece soon.

Hello, it is a wonderful video, thanks to share it. I need ask a question please. I have Pocket 3 for a little time. I make only documentaries in sunny places and I want to use one filter only because I don't have free time to change it. I could use a VND filter, but it causes a slight loss of video quality, so I'm thinking to put one fixed ND/PL filter on my Pocket 3. I shoot only in 4K 50p in sunny days, with what a light transparent cloud. If I want to use a ND/PL filter with a 50-400 ISO range and Automatic Exposure, is it more useful to buy a ND16/PL or ND32/PL filter? I thank you.
@markexploringnewstuff
@markexploringnewstuff 3 ай бұрын
First, thank you for watching and your comment. The ND 16 is 4 stops while the ND32 is 5 stops of light, they are very close. If I had to pick one, would buy the ND16 and see if that meets your needs or maybe buy both and return one. Sometimes it’s best to try both out in multiple shooting situations and take advantage of the return period for the one not chosen. Stay well and enjoy your Pocket 3!

it's called a "variable" polariser with ND filter. (Because it has the rotating disc, and you can "dial" it in) but some people don't like variable polarizers because they can create a vignette (a darker border - sometimes as a blur or a shadow on the edges of the frame depending on the position of the polarizing dial)
@markexploringnewstuff
@markexploringnewstuff 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. I experienced no vignetting with the polarizer and the rotating disc made adding and removing much easier.

in this case these ND's are not variable. that's why you need to choose 16, 32, 256 etc the adjustable polarizer on top of the ND is the variable.@@z352kdaf8324

I have a K&H ND4 and ND8 for my OP3. I probably need a higher ND. What do you think about the Variable ND filters out there compare to the single stop filters? I saw this video before I got the P3 but came back to it for your expert opinion.
@markexploringnewstuff
@markexploringnewstuff 5 күн бұрын
I only have the single stop ND’s. The DJI set of 3 is 4/6/8 stop. Plus, I have the Polar Pro set of 3 (that also have a CP on each) at 3/5/7 stops - these translate to ND 8 thru ND 256. The variable ones I see on Amazon are 1-5 and 5-9 stops but I haven’t seen one with the CP feature. I mostly use Polar Pro Vivid Collection (3/5/7 stops) because the CP really helps with colors - these are ND 8, ND 32 and ND 128 and that range works for me so far.

@@markexploringnewstuff thanks mark. I'm leaning toward the K&H variable ND. The ones I have fit close so the gimbal closes all the way.

You didn't mention if the polar pro can be put at the 15mm wid angle lens. I took a lot of time when u criticise it at the dji, so I was wondering why u don't mention it at the polar pro. And why should one stop less be more practical? I can't see that. I am very happy with my dji filters.
@markexploringnewstuff
@markexploringnewstuff 4 ай бұрын
None of the ND filters can be put on top of the wide angle 15mm DJi lens, as the lens top is not magnetic. Both ND filter sets greatly improve the video quality in manual mode. Glad you are happy with your selection. Enjoy the Pocket 3!

I found the DJI and Polar Pro filters really compliment each other with DJI having a 16/64/256 while Polar Pro has 8/32/128. I use both just find the DJI are tougher to take off. Enjoy your Pocket 3 and thanks for watching!

Can you leave the filter on when shutting down the pocket 3?
@markexploringnewstuff
@markexploringnewstuff Ай бұрын
With both these ND’s, I have seen other videos that show you can but the gimbal will not close to its normal position. They have indicated that gimbal is not damaged. Out of an abundance of caution, I always remove the ND before closing.

Are the PolarPro filters slim enough to stay on the pocket 3 when it's turned off?
@markexploringnewstuff
@markexploringnewstuff 5 ай бұрын
The Pocket 3 is able to shut down, but the gimbal will not fully reset to original closed position - this is will be the case with any external filter/lens being on at shutdown. From what I have heard this will cause no damage to the gimbal. In my practice, I always remove the filters before shutdown just be “safest”. Thanks for watching./

None of the filters will allow a full closed position if they are installed. This was an oversight on the part of DJI if they had just designed it with a couple more millimeters of space.

Not if you want the gimbal to close completely. Other videos have indicated that leaving on will not damage the gimbal, even though it won’t fully tuck in. I always remove to be safe.
