I ordered the Mavic 3 cine. Only thing I didn’t like is I had to pay dji $599 for dji care (2 year)

I understand why. The smart controller v1 struggled even with 1080p 30fps from the Air 2S. Endless reports of lag etc. on youtube that DJI probably did not like in terms of the effect on brand perception. There’s no way it would be able to process 1080p 60fps coming from the mavic 3. If they limited it to 1080p 30fps, then instead of people complaining about the lack of compatibility, as they are now, people would complain about the lag lol (perhaps to an even greater degree). There was no perfect solution. If I had had to choose, I probably would have chosen to require the smart controller v2 also.

@@JamalienN It sounds to me like the smart controller (v1) wasn't really worth the money. Maybe the new controller is much better but why is it not backwards compatible with the Air2s etc. It can't be that hard to do.

Hi Ian. I think DJI are reaching the point where they will price themselves out of the market. We bought their expensive smart controller on the basis that it would be compatible with future drone releases. In th RC world we can buy a transmitter that will fly hundreds of models. The new 3 doesn't appear so far to be a huge improvement over my mavic 2 pro but would have made it a more viable upgrade had I been able to use my existing smart controller. Be careful DJI you may loose the loyalty of the hobby drone pilots that have made you as successful as you are today. Fly safe.

The SSD, larger battery, and dual camera system offer a lot for the prosumer. Definitely not even aiming at hobby with this product. The RC situation is pretty lame, I too feel bad for getting suckered into a version one product. I am usually better at that. This new RC does have better tech as well. A step up for the price. I am actualy relly interested in the Inspire 3 when it does show up. That one will be a good buy. I would buy couple Mavic 2 pro before the Mavic cine 3

Actually the FrSky Taranis X9D Plus is open source. Infinite amount of programming options. The learning curve will break your mind. I Have one and it's mind boggling to contemplate what it can do. DJI is simple. Made for non techie. Compared, Taranis x9d plus is gun, dji rock.

Yep, thanks for the heads-up Ian. This might signal the end of the road for me, at least for a while. I've spent enough on my smart controller and my Mavic 2 and mini 2, and the likely increasing restrictions could mean less and less opportunities to fly, so a couple of grand on a new setup just now seems pointless. 🙁

The part 107 isn't that hard. I did some sample questions, and got half right. I can't remember much of my flight school. The navigation section would take some studying. One other section , slipped my mind, takes some study as wrll.

Honestly, I don't have lots of money.But I personally bought the DJI mavic air 2 when it came out. I hated using my phone so I got the smart controller. 2 years later I'm lookin for more out of my drone and I just purchased DJI Mavic 3 Cine Premium Combo (Financed) For me I want to get into professionally doing videography and photography as a living and to me its just worth it to have the best of the best and then you don't have to upgrade as often if that makes sense. I do the same thing with my iphones and buy when they come out with actually good new tech.

Thank-you for your video. Just unboxed my Mavic 3 having sold my Mavic 2 but kept my smart controller. Absolutely flabbergasted that the drone doesn't work with the smart controller. If I had known I would have sold the smart controller with my Mavic 2. This is sharp practice by DJI and I am thinking of sending my Mavic 3 back and just using the mini until they sort this out.

I agree Ian, I’m fed up with paying huge amounts of money on products that they don’t support for very long. I’ve got the Smart Controller and an ultrabright CrystalSky ($1000!). Both now seem destined for the dustbin. My suggestion is to buy the new 8” Tripltek tablet. It’s got up to 1200 nits brightness an 8” screen and will fly both DJI and Autel drones (and probably others). Just pair it to the appropriate “low cost” controllers.

That's an interesting bit of kit. My fear is that even if DJI bring out a larger, improved Smart Controller, it will be dropped by them in a couple of years' time again. Will take a close look at the Tripltek. Cheers.

@@IaninLondon The advantage of the Tripltek tablet is that it is somewhat future proof for DJI drones in the sense that you just need to run the latest Fly app. You actually get a better picture with the Tripltek compared to the Smart controller (bigger and a little brighter). It also functions as a normal tablet and is incredibly durable.

Considering the pro-level price of the SC, it’s really sad that DJI wasn’t willing or able to keep supporting more than on one generation of pro-drones (plus a few consumer-models and an older Phantom). Does not make it very tempting to once again make the same mistake again. This, and their continuous lack of proper EU-regulation support means at least I’m not upgrading my M2P any time soon…

Ian, another great video from you - thank you. My concern is that DJI have not yet released a C2 class drone in line with the EU classifications. I have an A2 C of C in the UK however without a slow speed mode as per C2 class I feel DJI has lost sight of where the regulations are going in Western Europe.

Sadly it seems DJI don't care about it's consumers any more, just trying to get as much money out of them as they can. What they are missing is other drone manufacturers have not only caught up with them but in some ways over taken them. You may have to start collecting drone's from other makers 🤔

Yeah I'm looking at Autel now. The 500m limit really got me when I couldn't get up mountain to film tower. Was like 100ft short. Staring at cliff. Ugh.

I agree and it's all the more reason why companies like Autel should be trying to capitalise on these kind of things in some way. I think DJI are getting a bit complacent and just expect people to just reinvest like and this is very poor in my opinion. The new controller should have had a way bigger and better screen etc as well as any other possible upgrades in my opinion. Something that makes it an upgrade to the other not just another version for Mavic 3.

@@davidmaskew problem is other companies trying to get chips.. DJI has more pull being a huge company. Companies want to make deals with them.. sucks for smaller companies. Hoping autel can get their chips they needs and release lite+ sooner than expected.

@@divingfalconfpv4602 Yeah, I currently just have a mini 2 which I've had a few months now as my first drone but I'm considering moving up. The lite+ could be an option although if the Nano+ is reasonably good it's probably no more than I need. Problem is at this rate DJI will probably be releasing the Mini 3 before Autel get their products out.

They did this with the Crystalsky also. Basically, they seem to expect that users start from scratch with each new drone. It's as if Nikon introduced a new battery and a new lens mount for each new top model, like the D3, D4, D5 and D6. A Mavic 3 with Fly More and Pro controller is $4,200. What was the name of that other company again? Autel?

and if you use the stock controller that comes with the M3, you ONLY get occusync 2.0, what bullsh*t is that, at least they could have given the standard M3 O3 and when combined with the smart controller you get 3+

Mavic 3 is out of my price range and the new controller is far too pricey for what it is. I'm going to be buying an Air 2s in the New Year and will just get the Fly More Combo . For me the smart controller has too small a screen so I'll probably get some sort of android tablet. Always enjoy your videos nice and straight forward and concise thanks

I was hoping this new Smart Controller would work with my Air 2 and Air 2s. I never bought the current one because it seemed like it was at it's end of life. The fact the new one only works with the Mavic 3 is a big let down. Guess I should feel better about buying a tablet and using the controllers that came with my drones. Moving to the future I may for once start looking at other drone makers, really not a fan of DJI's philosophy here. Killing the crystal sky was also terrible since there is no bright screen option from DJI.

It’s the DJI Tax yet again, whilst I love my DJI drones, DJI don’t give any loyalty back to the customer who always has his hand in his wallet. DJI should offer a trade in service like Apple, I can see DJI losing customers, my next drone will be Autel, regards

It’s a really bad move they could easily have made it backward compatible by downgrading the transmission quality. Oddly I have just upgraded my old controller to 1.5.0 and it says support for Mavic 3 but I have no way of testing it

Knowing that this would probably be the case, I just purchased a pre-owned Mavic 2 Pro on Ebay. I didn't want to waste the investment I made in the Smart Controller. After seeing the prices of the M3, I'm glad I did. It turned out I ended up with Ed Ricker's drone that he had sold earlier this year.

Hi Ian. Been a while since chatting with you on the forum. I think you’re spot on with your assessment here. I think the whole thing is just way over priced. The mavic 3, the new smart controller, the Action 2, just everything way over priced. That’s just my opinion though. I bought the mavic mini, the mavic air 2 and the action 2. And given the way the prices are going, I think that will have to make do for a while. It’s good to see you keeping up with the latest though. I for one appreciate your view on this latest “upgrade”!! Keep it up my friend!!

The Mavic 3 also does not support the DJI white Goggles or the Goggles RE. My Mavic 2 is now becoming priceless.

Totally unaware of this, it seems we're now experiencing the marketing ploys similar to mobile phones and charging cables. It's not about the quality, it's about the money. Good work Ian! P.S For those wanting to purchase the Air 2s (own experience), take into consideration the inability of not being able to place an iPad mini as your screen, unless, and again, more money to purchase an extra gadget to hold it, unlike the Mavic 2. (I do miss my Mavic 2).

DJI Not So Smart Controller. The original Smart Control was underpowered at launch but the GO 4 app didn't require horse power as a lot of the smarts of the system were on the drone itself. Then come high computing power phones and the Fly app which moved a lot of the system smarts into the phone/controller side of things. The Smart Controller got the Fly app as well but was stressed running the ground side of things. Now we have the Smart Controller 2 and I am hoping that they have used the best available android processor this time (too bad that they can't work a deal with Apple for one of their phone chips) in the Smart Controller 2. I am with you Ian, DJI should have come out with a new design for the Smart Controller with larger screen, more NITs of brightness and the list goes on.

I get it. And this confirms it for me. I’ve invested so much in my M2P with the smart controller, multiple batteries and accessories not to mention around £800 on ND filters. I’ll stick with my investment as it actually works fine and produces wonderful images and video.

Thanks for the for warning and I am now for armed. The Smart Controller not being compatible with the new Mavic 3 is a deal breaker for me. I purchased the Smart Controller to work with my M2P as I needed the temperature range due to the climate I work in. After investing the money in the Smart Controller, I am not prepared to pay >$1200 for a new controller for the M3P. I am hoping this is going to be corrected in the future.

Interestingly, I got a message on my old SC yesterday, that there was a new upgrade for M3. I don’t have the M3 and may not bother, but I downloaded it anyway because I assumed there might be changes that affected my MA2 or Phantom 4. The upgrade went fine-apart from the fact that the M3 does not show up in the list. Right hand and Left hand not communicating? If they don’t fix this, my next drone will be an Autel. Or I’ll get the new Tripltek which works with either brand and some others.

I’m not heavily invested in drones but hearing of these problems at higher levels is depressing. DJI has done a good job so far but I can’t help but wonder if the CCP is interfering with their operations.

Yes its a pity this is the way it is, tech moves so fast and consumer interest seems to be forgotten. One extremely strange thing I found was having to buy New controller with combo Pack and also having to pay for the standard controller as well. I’m certain this standard controller costs 200/300 quid so why not do combo package without standard controller “Dji Robbery”

they should bring a „mavic 3 light“ compatible with the first smart controller and only the 4/3 hassicam, same frame, batteries and props, without the double cam. this would be a little lighter, even longer flight time and allow a price tag well below 2000. i would immediatly jump on this.

If I can't fly the Mavic 3 with my "old" Smart Controller then I'll keep my Mavic 2 Pro. Why should I spend 1000 euros on a new Smart Controller even though mine is only 2 years old? It is by no means sustainable. Throwaway society in 2021 DJI ?

Ian, it never dawned on me that it did not work. I found out after faffing about over an hour, trying this and that. Gutted, then pacifying my self because I ordered the RC with Classic. That made in worse. Now I know I've been had!!!.

Thanks buddy. I've used and have been playing with the new smart controller for well over a month now and I can confirm that it is def more then tweaked lol. That's no stutter or glitchiness at all in the device.. it's smooth as silk. I will continue to test it and get back to you with my findings. Nevertheless I do agree with the sticker shock. If it weren't for the community I wouldn't have it to begin with. It's way out of my price range. Lol. Anyways thank you much for this video. God bless Mikey

@@PhillyDroneLife Autel's SC is better. It's brighter and larger. For all the fan bois yelling about how good DJI is, this M3 launch is a bit of a mess with incomplete software, super high price and now compatibility issues. If they truly have no competition why not wait until they are really ready? Something fishy about this launch. Don't get me wrong the drone will end up great. But there seem to be cracks in the kings castle =p

I think I would only consider buying the Mavic 3 if they made it compatible with the the FPV goggles and the hand controller (I have both). 40 minutes of flight time with goggles on would be awesome. I purchsed the Air 2s thinking they were going add that capability in some of their prerelease statements but was disappointed to see they never followed through. Apparently some people who received prerelease versions of the Air2S said that it could be used with the FPV and motion controller so it must have been possible. I won’t make the same mistake with the Mavic 3. It will have to have that capability already before I push the buy button (see that DJI if you’re monitoring these comments, as I’m sure you are!).

I personally find it pretty ballsy of dji to release the Mavic 3 in such a way. No compatability for smart controller, a half-baked firmware with features to come?, no guarantee it will work with upcoming remote ID requirements, no actual new features....and all of this for double or more the price😲 It's as if they think they can do whatever they want and we will just buy it up. Not this guy and I hope others send the same message. For Pete's sake they can't even release an update to let Android users experience the Virtual Flight App for their fpv drone lol. When Dji introduced the Smart Controller they promised it would work with future drones. I bought it to control my Mavic 2 Pro - one would assume that "future drones" would include the next generation of Mavic... And now not even the next generation after the MP2?

I bought mine to use with the Pro 2 and when the restrictions came in place I got a Mini2. Which I use on the Smart controller to. Was hoping the Cine 3 would have a C1 code on it and I could use it with the smart controller BUT, until they start putting a C1 code on the Mavic 3 the SMart controller is a minor issue, No C1 code thanks but no thanks DJI.

I am really irritated to hear this. I have just bought the Mavic 3 convinced it would work with the smart controller. Flying the I2 and Mavic 2 pro it is a real bummer. DJI make a move!

i am really pissed. i have 2 of the „old“ hardware smart controller because i believed to the upward compatibility to new products. i bought this expensive hardware together with 2 mavic 2 pro including 9 smart batteries as a strong backup solution. i would definitely change to 2 mavic 3, but the incompatibility of my smart controllers stop me to do so. i do nature, wildlife and volcano imaging, never lost a drone, but i have to be on the safe side. so i will not upgrade, exept dji will close the compatibility gap.

Worse yet I bought the 2000 nit CrystalSky that was supposed to work with everything, and now it can't run the app and is obsolete. I think I'll stick with the Mavic 2 Pro. I need to actually see what I'm shooting! Also the Mavic 2 Pro has tripod mode, which is very nice vor "pro" shots.

DJI got this wrong- the mavic 3 should have been compatible with the smart controller if buyers wanted to opt for the pro controller then that would have been there choice to release a drone that was not ready and take away from a controller that so many DJI users already had was bad business shame on you DJI

Good day Ian, I just watched you video on the RC Pro Smart Controller. I just wanted to confirm from what you have put out that if i buy the Mavic 3 , the RC Pro remote will work with the unit as i do not want to spend so much on a Mavic 3 CINE as i already have an INSPIRE @ which has PRO Res and Cine DNG.

The existing Smart Controller (sold for the last 3 years) will not work with the new Mavic 3. But the new RC Pro Smart Controller will; this is the remote that is sold with the Cine Package of the Mavic 3. But, to clarify, the RC Pro Remote will not work with any other model at present. The Mavic 3 and the Cine are the only models that it will control.

Hey what did you expect? Suprised. I paid 1500 for the Crystal Sky Ultra and now look? They dropped support on all their newer drones. Its a paper weight. Its such a great long lasting bright tablet and could be of good use for another 10 years but DJI just want you to keep buying their products

There's other drones. Autel Evo II has 6k resolution. Image much better than the DJI. Skydio has follow, which blows away, the one on DJI products. I'm just having a hard time justifying spending alot of money on what's essentially a toy.

There is suppose to be a new better smart controller for the Mavic 3 but I will not get the Mavic 3 cine version because I'm a hobbyist and the rest of my equipment is just squeaking by doing 4K-30 single screen max(can't even add a B roll). Even 4K-30 I have to view the footage on player then write down the file and times I want then use an editor to cut them out. If I did get a cine I may as well get a Ronin 4 axis system to film my rock crawlers, the Ronin systems are amazing! That said I do like the original smart controller and I usually use it with the Air 2s. I live in the Philadelphia area and film where there's a lot of air traffic, in and around class B and D airspaces. The thing I need to watch out for the most is helicopters (i also keep my eye on fixed wing but normally they don't fly under 400' agl where I'm at unless they have a bigger problem than me). Since it's the city and close to or in controlled airspace most air traffic has ADS-B. When I use the smart controller it frees my phone to run Flight Radar 24 at the same time. I have two sources that shows threats at any altitude but the Flight Radar 24 gives me the approximate altitude which is very important. That said I doubt I will get a cine, I'm not a professional and don't see spending the money for the cine or all the other equipment I would need to use pro-res. A lower model, a smart controller 2 and at least one extra battery is a possibility. Of course if the maps and range are not vastly improved over the first "smart" controller I won't consider either.

The smart controller just got a software update that says it’s for mavic3. This launch is a mess. DJI on the forum also say more drones for the new smart controller are coming but they didn’t say which or when.

Hi Ian, the old smart controller was punishing to operate the air2s properly, I did not expect it to operate Mavic 3. However I think for the price of the new Smartcontroller, i expect it to be able to control the A2s, Mini 2and M2P. Are you saying, it's not?

Hey fella. Yeah, at the moment, they're saying it won't. Which is real BS when you consider the new RC Pro is their latest offering that should and could easily be backward compatible with the more recent Air 2S and Mini 2 models.... I'm hoping a bit of public pressure may force them a bit to update the firmware as this has to be a software thing, not hardware. CHeers, Ian

I do think that since the Mavic 3 uses the same basic controller as the Air 2, that the RC Pro should at least work with that model in the future, maybe when they release those new features in January

I would be so angry if I bought a V1 expecting future compatibility. I bought an Air2S that comes with RC pro (yes it’s compatible now) for $1700 USD. DJI must be trying to make up for something that’s one hell if a deal. $1300 flymore combo. So I paid $400 for RC Pro not $1200 USD. DJI says it’s a chip shortage and V1 remote shortage and some customers would receive the RC Pro. ????? Crazy right?

Not shocked that the existing smart controller isn’t compatible with the new Mavic 3, what I do find a bit ridiculous is that the new RC isn’t backwards compatible with the oc2 drones like Air2s and Mini 2. Hard pass for me, I’m way more interested in the new Nano+ Also as you say Ian, I wouldn’t expect any support updates soon. dji software and firmware updates on the existing drones have been plagued with bugs and issues. Love my drone but think Dji need to put way more effort into testing this stuff before they release it to the general public. How difficult is it to set up some kind of beta programme for people who can sign up.

I’m amazed that you have to get the Mavic 3 Cine with the smart controller… the RC pro is $1500 AUD. I do get why the smart controller isn’t compatible due to the difference with the “transmission” standard from OC2 to OC3+. However surely the RC pro is back compatible?

Just a piss off. Sorry for the negativity but how frustrating that a $750 controller isn't compatible with a nearly identical drone. I get that sensors/camera were upgraded but this is just pure "profit seeking" corporation BS. This immediately halted my decision to buy the Mavic 3

HI Ian another informative Video for the Mavic3 owners and prospective buyers, to be truthful I will not be one of them as I think this Drone is overpriced and saying that I can only think its aimed at the Photography market and the hard and fast movie makers amongst us, but I am sure like all things being equal it will reduce in price as the years tick away, so I will stick to what I have and am very happy with the results that I am getting, regards TJK UK.

Progress marches on . We experienced the same thing when we discovered that our very expensive CrystalSky monitors no longer worked when we got the Mavic Air and MA2S . Nothing to be done I suppose but use the items till we no longer fly drones compatible with them or immediately get the best price we can on Ebay before the inevitable flood lowers the prices paid.

Not only all that but I email support to ask if "When my new RC Pro arrives, will it control camera settings like aperture and shutter speed with the dial?" They replied "The RC Pro is mainly used for Aircraft movement, we don't have the plan to control the camera parameter for the moment, but I'll feedback the issue to the R&D team to see if it's possible to add in the future." Kind of pathetic since it is a "Pro" controller!

I can't believe for a second it wouldn't control the camera settings. They were confused. How else would you set them? They gave you bad advice.

@@IaninLondon I really hope you are right but I was asking about the dial being used instead of tapping on the screen. I asked them quite specifically "if the right dial, now assigned to only zoom, can be used to change aperture and shutter speed just like the Phantom 4 pro?" Of course all touch screen options will be there but I really hate tapping several times just to start the adjustment then having to clumsily slide back and forth. It is MUCH easier and more precise to simply use the dial to adjust. Tapping the dial changes between aperture and shutter speed.

Not only am I disappointed with the new smart controller, but very disappointed with the Mavic 3. Firstly I was hoping for a modular gimbal which would have made DJI more money by selling these add ons’ and would satisfied a greater range of photographers and videographers. A mini Inspire. Therefor teasing Mavic 3 users to later upgrade to their more pro level devices. Finally it’s zoom mode is hardly a zoom, it’s a fixed lens with an extender. The setup would have been so much better if their R&D department would have listened to their customers. A real missed opportunity there DJI. I had money set aside to purchase it, but not with this setup.

This is the business world. These are all link with top end companies like apple. Apple new M1 is not compatible with iMac screens after 2016. It’s not that far we been passing. 2019-2022 world was almost shut down is I’m not wrong and still we are struggling to live, earn and eat.. but electronic world don’t care about the human world. Hi Ian I’m disappointed with DJI I’ve got the original smart controller. Because it’s incompatible I won’t be buying the Mavic 3 . DJI have made a big mistake possibly losing thousands of customers. They don’t even offer the Mavic 3 and RC pro as package so even if you bought the Mavic 3 and RC pro together what the hell do you do with the standard controller. Any way in summary they’ve lost my business. Regards Harvey Davies
