Coking looks a lot cleaner nowadays. I can remember the plumes of black smoke coming out of the stack at Sharon Steel's Fairmont, WV works. It closed in 1979. It was a superfund site until a few years ago. Now the land has been reclaimed.

DJ Love your videos !!! My Father-in-law a shift Foreman of the Coke Battery’s at the Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point Works near Baltimore. My dad worked at the rolling mills there for a couple years in his early 20’s. He later worked at Koppers Company for a few years, and yes it is the same company that had a small fleet of gray covered hopper cars, and I have one on my layout. He worked for their Construction Division which was located at Pratt and Scott Streets and wrapped around the parking lot on the east end and south side of the B&O Railroad Museum. He worked his way up to Chief Engineer of Construction and had to travel around the world at times. In 1960 he was sent to Genoa Italy for two and a half years to build a section on Kernigliano Steel, not sure of spelling !! I was eight at the time and what a great opportunity for a kid. Dad would take my younger brother and I into the mill and show us around the plant from inside the car. I have wanted to model a steel Mill on my layout, we will be moving soon and I am hoping to find a house with enough room to do so, as your videos have rekindled my desire to do so. Barry Broyles

I don't think it'd be economical to make coke out of lignite. I think the grades have more to do with the size of coal chunks, as they would require different heats and durations to make coke from them.

My uncle who grew up in Braddock said that a lot of the young guys including him used to dive off the old Rankin bridge. He told us the bottom of the river was covered in old cars. In the early 60s I remember going water skiing on the Monongahela very close to downtown Pittsburgh and the point. I remember being scared to death because the barges were everywhere. So yes, I swam in the Mon. 😆

Very good detail. Works staff are keeping the storage area very tidy, probably to reduce coal dust contamination. The plastic tanks are to store water to be sprayed on the coal or the roads for dust-reduction.

I am not surprised by the color of the water. In the 1970’s the Monongahela River (Allegheny and the Ohio) caught on fire because it was so polluted. It was one of the major reason for passing the Clean Air and Water legislation of that era. Great video as usual. Pennsylvania Coal is great for making Coke but now most of the fuel coal comes from out West, it burns cleaner.

Just an fyi, the dozers might be blending, but the main reason that they shift the coal continuously, is because coal produces high internal heat nd spontaneously combust into flames. Thus, the coal piles must be continuously shifted and water sprayed onto it.

They don't do that with the huge coal piles at electric plants... nor people's basements. There's plenty of air circulating among the nuggets and coal isn't decomposing to create heat. The water spray is an EPA requirement (what else?) to reduce dust. Or am I missing some chemistry?
@KutWrite
@KutWrite 4 жыл бұрын
Haha! Love your sensayuma, e.g. the river (just mud and algae, I"m sure). Some might appreciate an explanation of those hoppers with one end painted differently to show which end has the rotary coupler, why only one end needs one, and the proper way of making up a string of them to go into a rotary dumper. That drone adds so much to your footage. Finally a suggestion for another location: Neville Island. I'm assuming there are still industries there and still served by CSX. There's a cool narrow bridge there too. I'm sure you've seen it before, going between Pgh and New Castle. PS Since we both love machinery, I think those bulldozers are more accurately called front-end loaders. solutionsinsafety.com/training/front-end-loader-training/

@@djstrains: Security at the island? I looked at Google maps. It doesn't seem within 5 miles of PIT, the joint air base nor AGC. Even so, don't you only have to be outside of the Class B airspace? I'd guess Neville is below the floor of PIT. Here, it looks like Neville is under the second ring, where the floor is 2500'. vfrmap.com/?type=vfrc&lat=40.491&lon=-80.233&zoom=10&api_key=763xxE1MJHyhr48DlAP2qQ If it's something you'd like to do, you could always call the FSDO or even the tower.

@@djstrains: Oh, I see. When I was there it was just a hired guard where those gas tanks were. I'd tell him I worked for CSX and he'd let me through. We didn't even have co. IDs until I was in yardmaster training... probably around 2002 or 4. It was sure more fun and less drudgery to train there than it was at Glenwood, where I spent the first two days. I moved to a Holiday Inn in Moon Twp. Convenient and nice.
