Hand Tools Only: Dovetail Box Made with ZERO Electricity

I shaved a few cents off of my electric bill by using only hand tools to build this cherry dovetail box to hold my chisels. It only took me about ten times longer to make. Worth it!
I don't think a woodworker is defined by whether they use only hand tools, some power tools, or even a CNC to build their projects, but I do think that every woodworker should have at least some hand tool experience. It's a little slower, but if done properly it's more precise, and the satisfaction you get from building something the same way it would have been built 200 years ago is immense.

Beautiful process and immensely satisfying (for you and the viewer). I love to work "without electricity" but it does have its problems. A cedar cot I was building this way - 88 mortise/tenon joints, 4 bookmatched panels etc., all hand cut, sanded to 2000 etc. and our son arrived 2 weeks early, well before it was finished. My wife bought me a Festool Domino system to avoid it happening again. Not long after, I was building a set of built-in drawers, all hand-cut dovetails, blind/half-blind and loving the process. My wife must have missed me on those lonely nights while I was happy in my shop so she bought me a Leigh dovetail jig system. I love to hand-thickness, sand to a polish and take my sweet time finishing my projects. Another pair of bedside tables was taking a little longer than my girl wanted, so she bought me a helical thicknesser. I'm currently working as slowly as I can on some hand-cut "bandsaw boxes" as I don't have a bandsaw... :-) Cheers and thanks from Sydney - Dave

No background sound track. Just the sounds of a sharp woodworker using sharp and well-maintained tools to fabricate an heirloom quality box for his faithful friends in which to rest between tasks. Oh, and breathing. As God breathed into us the breath of life, so you breathed into well cured cherry a new life. I appreciated all that and more in watching and listening to your project coming to life. Thank you. May the Peace provided by the carpenter from Nazareth be yours. May the blessings of the Creator be with you, yours, and all those who love you and whom you love.

Videos that play music over the natural tool sounds are almost unwatchable to me. Love the videos. My grandfather and his father were both into carpentry. Not masters or anything, but I was always impressed with what they built. I tried it for a semester in high school but it didn't really click. I'm wanting to give it another shot, but always feel discouraged when I think of my lack of space and funds for expensive tools. Was really nice seeing you build something simple yet beautiful with just your hands and basic tools, and I think that's just the sort of reminder I needed.

That's awesome, thank you for sharing Goats. My grandfather was the same way. Do give it another shot, if you are patient you can usually buy cheap used tools from someone getting out of the hobby and liquidating their tools. I've also had good luck at estate sales for hand tools. Best of luck in your woodworking journey!

I took this vo-tech class in high school, woodworking. I took a lot of vo-tech classes, because it was just big jerk-off, but this one time I had this teacher by the name of... Mr... Mr. Pike. I guess he was like a Marine or something before he got old. He was hard hearing. My project for his class was to make this wooden box. You know, like a small, just like a... like a box, you know, to put stuff in. So I wanted to get the thing done as fast as possible. I figured I could cut classes for the rest of the semester and he couldn't flunk me as long as I, you know, made the thing. So I finished it in a couple days. And it looked pretty lame, but it worked. You know, for putting in or whatnot. So when I showed it to Mr. Pike for my grade, he looked at it and said: "Is that the best you can do?" At first I thought to myself "Hell yeah, bitch. Now give me a D and shut up so I can go blaze one with my boys." I don't know. Maybe it was the way he said it, but... it was like he wasn't exactly saying it sucked. He was just asking me honestly, "Is that all you got?" And for some reason, I thought to myself: "Yeah, man, I can do better." So I started from scratch. I made another, then another. And by the end of the semester, by like box number five, I had built this thing. You should have seen it. It was insane. I mean, I built it out of Peruvian walnut with inlaid zebrawood. It was fitted with pegs, no screws. I sanded it for days, until it was smooth as glass. Then I rubbed all the wood with tung oil so it was rich and dark. It even smelled good. You know, you put nose in it and breathed in, it was... it was perfect.

I love the silent treatment here... with exception of the sawing of course, no problem with that. I've come to realize that after years of investing in good power tools, I really should have started with investing in learning the basics first and mastering hand tools before moving on to power tools. I couldn't imagine sawing a board through the widest side by hand like that and then taking a plane to it with the aim of getting that kind of result. Looks like I have a LOT of work to do!

Thank you Clark I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I too started with power tools before realizing that hand tools are actually more precise in a lot of situations. Same boat for me! It's been a couple years at this point, but I don't always have a lot of time to spend in my shop, so it's still only been a few projects... Started with a (very) small workbench. Dovetail recipe card box (double dovetails), a cribbage board (I had some fun with it and used a woodburning tool to make a celtic weave around the border), and a magnetic knife strip made to just look like a board on the wall are a few of the other projects i've completed. And the most fun and important on for me so far - my sister's fiancee asked if I would make a box for the engagement ring. I used lumber from a walnut tree that grew in our grandparents' back yard. The inside cushion is lined with leather, the top is secured by magnets instead of being hinged, and the space where the box and lid meet is padded with leather as well. Hand tool woodworking is one of the few things I've found that's relaxing and calming all while being labor intensive enough to break a sweat at times... The perfect mix of detailed precision work and creative, artistic design process... I wish I would've discovered this when I was a kid.

Good work DK, I was put off by many woodworking videos because they show off machinery instead of craftmanship. Yours is thankfully different, how real woodworking should be!

Great vid - thx! No frills, just the tools, the materials, and the task. Love it. BTW - technically, plenty of electricity was used: Brain, muscle, and all cellular activity, lighting, heating, and recording - and then there is this interwebs thing ; )

Thanks Colin! And I hadn’t thought about electricity in the human body… by that logic we’ve been using power tools for thousands of years! 😅
