WHO GIVES A SH*T, SERIOUSLY? So if there is so much as a crucifix in the background, they have culturally appropriated Christianity too? I have seen many videos with crucifixes, none of which are accused of appropriation. ART IS ART and people are allowed to use any aspects of anything they please and it does NOT need to be a 100% representation because art is free. You do NOT own your culture, it is NOT property, it is a way of life. Ways of life can be chosen. You can be Indian, yet choose to live a White cultured life etc (which I have seen been done). This whole cultural appropriation crap is utter nonsense.

As an Indian student studying about Korea, I really get annoyed sometimes that how even today after having access to the world through internet, Koreans are least interested in understanding Cultures of other countries mainly the Global South. They may be economically more developed but definitely they are culturally less aware about others. Also this was a common phenomenon in west also, but the Indian Americans living there have voiced their issues, in Korea they barely understand this problem. Yeah before others say anything Indian has also many problem, and yes we speaking against them whenever we see that happening in popular culture.

Musicians using instruments from other cultures or even melodies doesn’t offend unless you start combining it with images and words that offend. Borrowing costumes and honestly dance moves starts to cross the line- especially when they start to become caricatures of a culture and worse when they can’t even appropriate a culture correctly (Native American culture-and others-gets appropriated a lot in the US as well it’s definitely not just K-pop).

The vast majority of cultures around the world actually LOVE it when foreigners take part in their culture, but only when it's done respectfully and that's the key part. It makes me incredibly happy and proud when foreigners recognize and enjoy my culture and I love sharing it with others, but the problem with a lot of kpop is how disrespectful and inaccurate it feels to the culture. Taking inspiration from another culture's traditional music is wonderful, wearing another culture's clothing can also be wonderful as long as they wear it correctly and in the right context. But taking bits of a culture and taking it out of context and making fun of it is where things become cultural appropriation. And there are also cultures like african americans who have had such a hard time over history that they don't like any outsiders taking their culture even if its done with good intentions, and we should respect those wishes. But most of us are fine with it as long as people participate in the culture with knowledge of where it came from, respect, and do things properly. Sadly kpop rarely lives up to this

As a Native American, it’s pretty cringe and disrespectful when I see Idols being forced to wear headdresses. Also, I love Dreamcatcher. But in my culture, the dreamcatchers are an scarred item that’s been made by us Natives or passed down by our elders. So, I do get a little torn. I do hope the group members know the meaning behind dreamcatchers, as well as the company. It was kind of weird for them to include “build a dreamcatcher” from their album years ago, but I do hope that the people who bought that album got educated. If not, that’s a shame. Honestly as painful as it is to watch I'm glad the truth is finally coming in front of everyone's eyes. That's the real korea, their real culture they are people filled with hate and yet have the guts to complain about racism they are facing it. And yes your favourite kpop idols have to put a filter on because they can't risk to lose India as their marketing field but how long are we Indians going to let this go? Bts suga in a vlive said there's a fan from India?? India has internet they have the app? And then in a run bts episode insulted India saying some stupid and a weird-a$$ name that was mentioned sounds like Indian name. Twice jihyo disrespected out culture during the Halloween and dressing up like so called "indians/native Americans", wonwoo from seventeen choose a song like shanti shanti when asked to sing when everything about the song was wrong, some idiot actress came to India just to show the poverty and slums and broadcasted it like that's just India all of India like what are they illiterate or just arrogant and poor? And blackpink placing our statue of God on the floor and no apology nothing, now sm releasing a song that has bhagawat gita shlokas in it??? Seriously when will this stop?!! Enough is enough. We don't want korean youtubers feeding off of us reacting to our culture when in reality this is what they truly feel fu*k these people let's boycott them they don't deserve our love or anyone's. I never knew about White Snake. But now that I see it, it's bad. I am not religious at all, but the Gayatri Mantra holds a very significant place, above any religious context. It is actually recited at the beginning of any new task. It symbolizes creation, good luck, prosperity, and education. Using it in a dark concept with a title (White Snake - Chinese culture believes it to be a sign of good luck and good fortune) that is important to another culture is both ignorant and arrogant.

Shanti means peace. So Shanti shanti means peace peace. Also oh my girl’s bridge is middle eastern style not Indian just to clarify. I do agree that a lot of CA is done due to ignorance. And although I am honestly more horrified than offended at how Korean media has depicted other cultures, I think that there’s really nothing we can do about it other than educate and give a chance to them to learn and grow. Despite that, I’m honestly tired of hearing “sorry” from idols and celebs. I’d rather hear an acknowledgement that “this is what I did wrong” and “I’ll fix it and do better next time” and they actually not repeat their problematic behaviors (wow!). I know my faves have made mistakes, but I’ve also seen them better themselves so I support them. Groups like oh my girl tho, have repeated CA even after a company apology, so I know they don’t care. In the end, I just want to see character development and respect for other cultures. I don’t think I’m asking much since we have the internet at our fingertips. What happened in the past was wrong and if they’re still relevant, they should apologize. But we should focus on making sure it doesn’t happen again. Mistakes are bound to happen, but this time there should be justified consequences.

The mantra used in Lee Hyori's song is considered to be the most important & powerful mantra known as the "Gayatri mantra". I pity those who take elements from other cultures on the surface level and don't try to understand the context or the deep meaning behind them. Gayatri Mantra is not a copyright of India, anyone is free to recite it but to use it for a melody in a sensual way will not help you and will make people who understand its meaning feel cringe and uncomfortable. It's not even insulting it's just a case of utter ignorance.

Recently I looked up "cultural appropriation" and found an important distinction. If the cultural feature used is something that the original culture would experience bias/negative treatment for, but the culture using it doesn't experience such penalties, such as K-pop idols wearing dreadlocks while African-Americans could get beaten up, arrested, or even killed for doing so ("driving while Black"), then it's cultural appropriation. Appreciation is being influenced by another culture artistically, such as using Southwest Asian (Indian or Middle Eastern) musical scales or rhythms without any other references in costumes, lyrics, etc. Another issue, though, around cultural appropriation, is who gets the money. There's a long history in the US of Black musicians starting a trend or writing a song, which then became popular in a white artist's version, so the white artist gets rich (as in rock n roll). The songs you played were perfect examples of cultural appropriation, but K-pop and K-hiphop are so heavily influenced by African-American music, that it's sometimes hard to draw the appropriation/appreciation line.

If it's disrespectful then yes cultural appropriation but it's hard for me where I'm from because we're a nation of many cultures and races lol 6 namely 6 let me not be dramatic but we practice cultural appreciation as we're encouraged to participate in each other's cultures and festivals and such plus first and foremost if it's not a national holiday for a particular race then we usually just identify as citizens of our country.

You’re missing the point about black folks being offended by braids and dreads. In the US, The Crown Act is being passed in several states. What is the Crown Act? It’s to make illegal to fire or discriminate against black people, particularly black women when they wear natural hairstyles, i.e., afros, braids, dreads, etc. It’s 2022 and black people have to fight for the right to wear the hairstyle of their choosing without repercussions in the workplace. Black people have always been discriminated based upon their hair. So, watching a k-pop idol wear a hairstyle that’s important and meaningful to black people…all over the world…it’s extremely disrespectful. They’re wearing the hairstyles without knowing the context, history and experiencing none of the negativity and discrimination. Same goes for music created by black folks. Black artists create music but rarely get credit or the monetary reward, especially in the 18th and 19th century. Also, look up the real story behind Jack Daniels.

There’s nothing wrong with using musical styles. But when you don’t do proper research for it, it’s still appropriation. Oh my girl’s bridge is influenced by middle eastern styles, not Indian or South Asian. Not only was there improper research, but then the song was associated with curry. Similar to hip hop- taking influence is great, but when you don’t know or understand the history of it (esp bc of its outreach) it can be problematic depending on how you go with it. As musicians, it’s the least they can do by having their facts straight. Tiger JK has used classical Indian influences it’s probably the best example of appreciating desi culture in Korea. Now any clothing or jewelry they wore in the mv has a reason to be worn bc the aesthetics are used in the correct context.

Jen V ♡ It is not appropriation if multitudes of people from that culture encourage you to wear their traditional clothing as fine attire at a formal event or even for a quick pic somewhere. @@hi-ve1cw From my perspective as a Native "american", for us it is appropriation, because it was outlawed until the late 1970s for our Nations to practice our own cultures openly. All was done in secret for the vast majority of our Nations. This law and its repercussions is why we don't encourage others to wear traditional clothes from our Nations or much else. We feel we deserve to try to regain and maintain what is ours without further interference. Whilst non-Native kids and adults were doing their tomahawk chops and mock war-cries wearing fake Native clothes and performing fake Native everything it was illegal and forbidden for Native Nations to participate in their own cultures, ceremonies, languages and spiritual ways. Children stripped of their traditional clothes, languages, beliefs, traditions and rites of passage, denied parental contact and family and forced into assimilation re-education camps, called boarding schools until childhood was over and let out at the cusp of adulthood with no ties to culture or family having lived through oftentimes physical, mental and s3xu@l abuse at the hands of those non-Natives in charge of their re-education. This assimilation was being forced on Native kids who watched from the sidelines as non-indigenous settlers wore fake indigenous clothings and performed fake Native rituals while being forbidden and punished for trying to take part in their very real cultures. It is illegal for you to practice your culture but the settlers can play at it and mock your ways while you are forbidden to practice the real thing openly. It was only the late 1990s when Natives gained the right to teach their languages formally to their children in school settings. So this is why most of us are fairly quick to ask a non-Native to please stop. Not that many listen though lol we get told all the time we are being "honoured".

In this case, no it wasn't. If you were invited to wear hanbok by the women who made them for the event, that was an invitation to fellowship and draw positves from that experience. So long as the US army didn't profit, disrespect them, or any other negative, take the opportunities to learn. It's not really a thin line sometimes, it is what it is. In this case, it was a positive. I understood your hesitation and you did what was right for you.

Okay after watching this video let me express my opinion on this, the first thing is that you must already know the meaning of "shanti" now as many people have already mentioned in their comment. About the mantra, it's called "gayatri mantra", it's holy mantra which means "Om, the Lord, is earth, the space in between and the heavens. That Lord is the one who is the most worshipful. We meditate on that effulgent, all-knowledge Lord. May he set our intellects in the right direction." So basically this mantra mean to keep our mind and soul at right direction. Let me tell you it's considered that mantras are very powerful we can't use them carelessly. One need to understand and know the meaning behind it and why is it used in the first place before using it for entertainment purposes. They are like holy scriptures and can't be used just anywhere. About indina culture, it's very vast if you get inside it, you will feel like time is passing by but still there are many things you are yet to know. It's not just about tribe and all Korean culture is praised but it's just one out there, Indian culture is made fun of because it has many and people are not interested in knowing about them so they just make their own fantasy and showcase them in their weird dance moves, acting and singing. India is much more than what foreigners think it is. It has various rich culture and ancient history you cannot deny to look before you take inspiration from it. Indians love their culture and their country a lot. So it's better to be mindful of how you are showing it because it can create a really sensitive issue and difference between two countries.

(Such as Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, Myanmars etc.) They’re mostly use in a classical court dance. I don’t know about in other countries, but in Thailand.. many people still worship this crown. For example.. before they use the crown, they have a ritual ceremony (?? I’m sorry My English is bad 😭) They never use it for fun because they think every crown have some spiritual living with them. Shanti means "peace" in many Indian languages. I think "cultural appropriation" is a very Western/American concept and while I understand that there is a reason why it has become a matter of concern for many, especially because of the way the native American and African-American cultures were exploited by appropriating their culture/art and not giving them the due credit, I, being an Indian, in the present context, personally don't seem to mind the practice so far as they are not deliberately insulting to any culture! Without taking inspiration from one another, cultures will end up getting extinct just like the Latin language. Cultures are by nature fluid and need to exchange ideas in order to thrive! Instead of getting offended at the drop of the hat, all we need to do is learn to be open-minded, respect the differences between cultures, and thereby enrich ourselves and the cultures we represnt!

As an Indian, i like to give my thoughts on it. Firstly the thing that the girl group wore on head is called "Mukut" basically translated as Crown which the Kings and Queens used to wear. Like the Royals in England, the Queen's Crown for instance (which anyways is made from stolen wealth from India 😑☹️) . But the ones that they wore was like of Thai style not Indian. The Indian ones are not pointed so there I guess the mixed it with Thai culture. Also the dance they were doing is not Indian but Bollywood-ish. As such dance routines are performed there. In Native Indian culture there are various artforms specifically to express Dance such as Bharatnatyam etc. So seeing that made me laugh a bit and that was good... Chakra are energy centres in our body if one do Yoga and not the Yoga of exercise but the Yoga as asanas and spiritual side to it, so one would know this concept. Also one offensive thi g in the entire "Appropriation" was using of Sacred Vedic mantras used in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism etc out of context just for sensual entertainment. As in a serious way these mantras are very sacred and used in Sacred Worships of Deities and Ceremonies etc and nowhere else. So one should be careful about that. As a foreign culture like Korea wouldn't know it or ignorant about it so we may forgive it but still it if would've happened in India, like eg Bollywood did this we may not spare them. Besides Bollywood has good history of doing it and abusing our Spiritual culture and symbols so i guess as people being inspired by Bollywood and thinking it represents Indian culture have picked it so it's not their fault as Bollywood doesn't follow Indian culture and "Appropriates" from everywhere else... Besides Bollywood is filled with Woke people. So i request if you want to know about Indian culture and history please learn it from variety of sources, South Indian films etc and also I would say learn the scriptural knowledge of Hinduism etc as it is too very interesting and exciting.... One thing I want to say is that this "Cultural Appropriation" thing is of recent times more kinda like the Western Abrahamic ways of looking at things. As in Ancient times all cultures throughout the world, such reciprocation and transfer of Cultures and Knowledge was common. That way every culture would gain something from other. Like the South East Asian culture have many Indian influences as well....

Their song "Oh My Boy" has a Jamaican concept which is even made explicit in the lyrics "Jamaican combination" and Hwangbo's attempt at a Jamaican accent. Although, this was after the group Roo'ra who's entire concept was reggae, their names stands for "Roots of Reggae" which was also the title of their first album.

All in all, these performances are so cringey and embarrassing. I feel a lot of times, they put on these costumes to entertain and make fun of us. There is also an interesting component to cultural appropriation in various fields such as fashion, food etc but one of the primary things is profit. At the end of the day, whose is profiting from the sale of a garment that has been culturally appropriated and relabeled; Is your restaurant marketing a cuisine and removing of language markers of that culture and selling it? These artists (and the companies behind them) decided that this was how they were going to market themselves out to the public and could think of no good concept than putting on a costume to exotify themselves.

the fact that Happyface Ent named their group Dreamcatcher and appropriated the symbol of Ojibwe culture still makes me cringe to this day

I think it's important in this kind of videos (even if the cases aren't as relevant) to acknowledge that regardless of feelings or public perception racism and cultural appropriation are wrong because they feed the idea that the people in this cultures are less or no even people. And those ideas are lies, different doesn't make the other or you less in any way. Also this ideas doesn't stay as such but always became systematic oppression and remember that any human right is all the human rights, we can choose we're all in this.

Btw, the song Danny called "Come A Come" is actually called "한 (恨)" which I guess is a word that doesn't translate very well in English, so Google calls it "Come A Come," but I've seen some translate it as "Resentment." There are many articles written on the concept of Han, and videos too, that should show up if you search for "Korean Han" or "Korean concept of Han."

I'm very offended about the Lee Hyori part. I'm a Hindu by birth although not so religious personally i still do believe you should never disrespect another religion and their faith and beliefs, and that line was the Gayatri Mantra which is probably the most commonly said prayer by Hindus all throughout the country....imagine doing a sexy dance while the lyrics says " in the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit, amen" ?!?!? Exactly, hella disrespectful

So that first song by Chakra that you showed... those headdresses are Indonesian/Thai, I'm not sure which. And some of the dance moves are what people stereotypically associate with Egyptians due to the directional drawing style of Ancient Egyptian art and hieroglyphics.

Shanti is a Sanskrit word which means peace. I also have mixed opinions about cultural appropriation. But I do love it when it is done correctly. For example Looona's Paint the Town. I absolutely love that song. Most typical stereotypes that these people have about India is our most popular song is Tunak Tunak Tun and most of our music is like this. Literally I have never seen any Indian in my life who listens to that song. Its just a meme.

I think people are giving too much free pass to kpop in terms of calling them out for their ignorance and stupidity because k-pop industry appears all cutesy on the outside..... I think this should stop ..... We all should criticize and call out k-pop for what 's wrong ,even if we need to be ruthless with our criticism.......let the k-pop fandom cry foul and come in defence of these offenders......we will teach them a lesson too.... because it is high time .....

Being an Indian Indian I have seen many things like this in old Bollywood, I'm especially sorry towards Africans but sorry wtf is this...🤣🤣🤣 It's so funny, especially that whole mantra part. It's not that I haven't seen mantras in songs but it should also make sense with the song, why Gayetri Mantra, it's a worship mantra for goddess Gayetri. I'm going to sound dark but I don't understand if I should laugh or be sad with this stupidity of the people that they don't understand the chanting of these mantras in wrong way can do some harm in their life, because these are used to activate chakras ( not girl band chakra 😝) I'm thinking of showing this to my mother, no even better my grandmother...🤣 By the way Shanti means Peace. One more thing in India no one uses the word 'curry' for the vegetables stew with spices, we call it 'Sabji' which literally means vegetables and kadhi (sound similar to curry) is a totally different dish which is made with curd and besan (gram flour).
