Professional fabricator here if you want a cleaner cut with your cut off wheels. Hold your grinder upside-down facing away from you and for Pete's sake clamp your work piece down securely. Great job in the end though. Looks amazing.

100% on the clamping it down; not only will it be safer you will get straighter cuts a couple of blocks to raise it will also have less cuts into your worktop. very cool project.

I really like how you explained the reasoning for all the parts and it made sense. A lot of pc build channels just kind of throw parts together and the reasoning is just because of the budget or because it’s really powerful. This felt a lot more down to earth

A year late, but that just comes down to the fact that most builders use standardized equipment that requires little to no modding and is modular. Any person could build a system now and it wouldn't be terribly expensive; there's also upgrade options without having to worry about proprietary sizes, mounts, etc.

Well done. Not the cleanest work, but at least it is more relatable this way. Everyone with access to a basic workshop for an afternoon or two can manage a good looking mod like this. $450 for an SFF build with 4C8T and a 3060 is wild! Most of us won't get bargains like you did, but the important part is to show you don't need all shiny new stuff to have fun.

@@DLMtechgarage I've actually managed to get an old Xaser III case in a similar shade of blue for my next build. Really hyped because some of the upcoming Intel Arc graphics cards actually come in blue, though they may be CN-only which I've got my fingers crossed against.

Most of the older OEM cases were designed with the knowledge that some folks would put a heavy CRT monitor on top of the side of the case. The Dell T series even lists the weight rating. So yeah, they are definitely overbuilt!

Solid work there bud! I don't think I've ever seen an Optiplex look so good. If I can make one suggestion, tho, it would be to affix mesh where the fans would have been in the side panel for dust mitigation; otherwise great planning and execution.

I did something like this with a slim profile DELL cheese grater - the empty cases are real cheap to buy. I put my own components in it and everything was great for a few years- and then the thermal paste totally dried up which caused the PC to shut down repeatedly a few minutes after logging onto the desktop. I had to go in and re-goop it. That's when the pain-in-the ass session started - all of the original install: - struggling to fit in the tight fitting MoBo - had to remove it and re-install it. - the tedious attaching all the I/O cabling - the tedious and time consuming forming into shape (cable flow mgmt) and doing all the zip lock tie downs for all the cabling ... all up in smoke - Had to it it all over again.!!! All of that extra work - just to get at four screws on the back of the MoBo to be able to pop-off the CPU Fan block - for the re-goop. Why? because all of these cases only have just one side panel to pop off. Never again!!! - I don't care how cool and sexy the old or new PC case looks like. If it doesn't have a second back side panel to pop-off - not interested. Great build /Mod you did there BTW!

I've done some mods in the past and when doing smaller cuts use a drill bit for the corner and cut from there . Use both hands on the Dremel, tape your cut lines they will be cleaner . If you have cutting discs that are smaller due to use keep them for curved cuts as it's easier to turn with a smaller disc than a larger one. Final tip and the most important use is a metric ruler and tape . The machine was built using a metric scale the fans are in mm it will give you more accurate measurements . Example the width of the two fans plus the gap in the middle it's easier to know 240mm plus the width of the gap over 3 3/4 + 2/16 + 3 3/4 =7 10/16 maybe ...

Planning to upgrade the GPU to an RX-570 I have but I need to make a bracket and get a rizer cable for the GPU to sit flat in the case and I will need to install a vent for the GPU to breathe. I did something SUPER similar with my 5070 mt. A nice little gaming box when it's all done, this can easily be done with metal snips too if you don't have a bunch of power tools, just be aware that front panel assembly becomes a lot weaker after you remove all that metal, avoid trying to man handle it after it's easy to bend and mess up the alignment (although that's not a hard fix) also be cautious of the gpu height anything above 115mm or so will end up interfering with the side panel if it's pcie power connection is on top, which is most of them. You can relocate the connector to the side if you are comfortable with a soldering iron and know what you are doing, but id just get a GPU that fits, it's much easier.

I highly doubt it’d fit, but you should’ve gone somehow more balls to the wall and put in a 120mm aio on the top part of the side panel or alternatively it kind of doesn’t make sense for the budget but getting a 92mm aio from asetek though it is over $100 last time I checked. That GPU stuff you showed wiggling it is kind of bad and should really be properly screwed down even though the Evga 3060 is pretty tiny. Anyways, amazing video not enough people are this crafty

Well done! I like the idea for the side panel intakes! You can fit fans in the front of the case, if you get the Noctua NF-A9x14 PWM fans. They're really thin and should allow you to install them in front of the GPU. I've been able to fit a 3060Ti in my Optiplex with these fans in the front as well. I'd also get some feet for the bottom to raise the chassis up a little and cut a hole in the bottom for the PSU to breathe its own air. Currently, it's sucking in hot air from the GPU. You can also thread a screw through to tool-less PCI-E bracket. I put screws through mine to secure things into place more.

Dude hell yeah anyone can shove a GPU in an older office machine, you made this thing custom and it came out looking great! Love the blues too, really surprised at the transformation here.

My first gaming rig was an Optiplex that I cobbled together. I cut the case up with some tin snips because the gpu was too big to fit in. I think it was an 8800gs or something like that..

Turned out really nice looking. I just cut out a piece on my side panel for a 9020 put some clear plastic, just need more money to get a GPU and I did take out the HD cage. There's a i7 4770 with a SSD. I like how your's has the M.2 socket.

Really neat to see people take 'junk' and make it into a useful rig again. We're in a world that likes getting the latest n' greatest even when it's not needed as an upgrade. So much so that used stuff often doesn't get considered.

Clamp a straight edge of timber and use that to guide your cutoff wheel, you'll get a much better result, quicker and safer.

I did something similar with a Lenovo SFF office PC I got for $50. I went with an i5 6500, 16GB of RAM and an RX 6400 low profile. Its pretty solid for what it is.

Since there is a power limitation you could use low profile cards and they are cheaper

I like it. I just picked up an Optiplex 7040 that has a 1660 ti in it and I worry the 240w PSU might not be enough. But, not having the patience you do, I think I'll look for a case that I can just transplant everything into and go that route.

Quite enjoyed this OptiPlex hecks they don't want you to knows about! ... heh, I painted My OptiPlex 5055's internal exposed interior for corrosion resistance (over the galvanized coating provides) and Heat Cured Urethane Conformal Coated the Motherboard and VGA adapter thingie and Memory and NVME SSD... uh, yea.. and!!! And used Silicon Dielectric Grease between the CPU and socket! and will be for the various exposed contacts and swapped out the AC power supply with a Pico type Power Supply for a '78 pickup computer! ... over kill just in case I sink it! maybe I'll add a water sensor ball cage thingie to shut it all down and uhm... yea! lol,

I think I preferred the hexagonal grills. Painting those up blue as well would draw the eye, and keep folks from looking through the holes.. and seeing the internals... Looks good either way tho.

Cool build, very well done! I know someone who recently spent around 1000$ on a pre-built with a 3060 in it, Insane how you end up with pretty much the same thing for 550$ less.
