I finally got a chance to spend some time with Kahles' excellent new 3.5-18x50 K318i side by side with the Tangent Theta TT315M 3-15x50 that I have been using for a few years now. Let me know if there is anything else about these two you would like to me get into more details about. This is the second version of this video. I tried to bump the sound up. Let me know if this is better.

Great review; thank you! I’d love to get your take on these two compared to the ZP5 3-15x50.

I looked at the Tangent Theta compared to the ZP5 a few years ago: opticsthoughts.com/?p=1673 ZP5 is very close. Almost as good optically and very solid mechanically.

Hey Ilya! I was wondering what you think of ultrashort scopes in general and specifically how the schmidt bender ultrashort 5-20x50 matches up to these other shorter scopes? I read it's harder to make the same quality optics in a shorter design but how does one like this match up to something like the regular S&B 3-20x50 (non-ultrashort)?

I am doing another comparison with the 5-20x50 Ultrashort in it. You do give up a little bit for short overall length, but I really like the design overall. darklordofoptics.locals.com/post/1340344/het-part-7-the-war-of-the-50mm-glass-setting-the-stage

How do the glass on the P vs M range(tangent theta) compare ?

Identical. It is the same exact optical system. The differences are only mechanical

I'd like to see your thoughts on the K525i also ILya. While i have no experience with TT my complaints for both the new Kahles are identical to yours. Though it's a more negative aspect for the K525i than the K318i. The K318i i tend to be lenient with give how compact the optic is, i see it's trade offs as a compromise for the design of the scope. The K525i i'm left scratching my head and asking why.

Well, K525 is also quite compact given the configuration. I have looked at it, but only briefly, so I do not have any sort of a detailed evaluation of it. Still, why Kahles decided to sacrifice this much FOV is indeed odd.

@@DarkLordOfOptics That it is and it's an aesthetically pleasing optic. I guess where i don't really understand the compromise of FOV is looking at say the Gen II razor. Smaller optic, larger magnification range, and larger FOV. Is that due solely to the 6x erector system?
@DarkLordOfOptics

@@5RWill Generally, it is harder to make wide FOV with a higher erector ratio scope. I do not know why Kahles decided to constrict FOV so much. Keeping the scope compact is the most likely reason, but given that several modern designs are compact while maintaining wide FOV, I am a little perplexed by why they did it and how they did it (clearly visible field stop ring)

Why don’t you do your videos indoors you never show what the view in the scope looks like and the traffic and birds won’t be drowning out your voice.

Mostly because it is nice to be outside and because I do not have a good space indoors where the lighting is adequate. I am looking to change that though. I'll be moving to another state this summer and I hope to have a better set up there both in terms of sound and lighting.
