Really fantastic turnout of competitors for what I understand to be a quite remote location. It's almost beyond comprehension to us here in the states that what happens on our salt flats and dry lakes also happens in Australia. However Australia has a great hot rodding heritage. Reflected in the drag racing and land speed racing for sure. Land speed racing is where the true innovation comes into play. Drag racing features classes with each one pretty much having a proven formula for building a competitive car. Probably the T/F bike classes are the most innovative but on the salt there is no proven way to go for many classes. So much stuff on a land speed car or bike is home made one off parts and philosophy.

Remote...HaHa....yeah not like Bonneville that's for sure. Nearly 6hrs from the states capital city, sealed road ends an hour from any civilised town then 100miles to the lake via dirt road. Worth the trip for a few days on the salt.

8:51 surprised to see the Alfa Romeo sprint running in H/PRO when it appears to be eligible to run in H/CPRO as it looks like an early model, before the plastic bumpers. Perhaps the car is an 1982 model year that just puts it out of the classic class? Does anyone know, also what speeds did it run?

Are you kidding me? @ 51:00 is a streamliner driven by Les Davenport. A Canadian who was partners with Joey Severance on a world championship Top Alcohol Dragster. Even that was a bit of a long distance partnership but running the Australian salt flats? That just blows my mind! Treit & Davenport is a U.S. based team who must have spent a fortune to get that car there.

I wonder how the owners of those airplanes get around the corrosion on the landing gear? Salt gets into everything out there.
@coupe545
@coupe545 4 жыл бұрын
I had thought that before the first time I went to this event. 4 years in a row in my ute and surprisingly not much picked up after being out on the salt each day, a thorough wash at home after and no corrosion. The race cars pick up a lot of salt due to the speed and distance they cover.

@coupe545
@coupe545 5 жыл бұрын
This is a representation of how I saw the event as a visitor. Drones aren't allowed over the course. The closest you can get o the course is at the start line or over 500m away along the 5 mile long track. Difficult to film from that distance without expensive camera equipment.
@houseofsolomon2440
@houseofsolomon2440 5 жыл бұрын
@@coupe545 I hadn't thought of the drone restrictions- makes sense to regulate it. I'll just have to attend event 😄
@gregorytimmons4777

@@houseofsolomon2440 It's not a great spectator sport but it's cheap to attend. I did visit the salt flats in Utah in 2000. Glad I did. Signed a waiver and watched cars take of at the start of the short course. Really great for checking out the machinery as they start their runs. Really accessible pits too.

Hi Keith, I'm just a tourist at this event. Track 1 has 2 miles of run up, 3 timed miles and 3 miles of slow down so difficult to capture full runs. Speeds are broadcast over a UHF radio most of the time. To edit in text showing speeds is possible although time consuming. Results are available here, www.dlra.org.au/

Thanks for this video. Awesome. I went to Bonneville in 2016 (late) and 2017 (early Sat & Sun). It was the best time of my life in the middle of nowhere with a lot of gear heads. I can recommend Bonneville (see Target 550 2016 run here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mJegmrim0ciVgJs.html - ) , but Australia is worthwhile going, obviously. Checking if I can combine with any of the V8 Supercar races, season there starts early. Thanks for the video.

Why no commentary? Somebody must speak a language down there, sheesh, be nice to know some things, like speeds, horse powers, classes, heros, etc, etc, nice eye-candy, meh to music, at least lets hear some of the racers talking...
@coupe545
@coupe545 5 жыл бұрын
I'm just a visitor (no association with DLRA), passing through for a couple of days during a week long event. Any Commentary I provide would at best be a guess on the vehicles specs. I've only provided a pictorial point of view as there are professional film crews there doing driver interviews and stories, etc. Music is provided to cover the lack of interesting audio, such as the irrelevant back ground chat and mostly the wind noise. Info on classes, vehicle entered and records set available here.... www.dlra.org.au/
