Ronaldo kept himself in amazing shape given the amount of tackles he's gotten. The injury that forced him to change his game though was before the 2014 world cup, where he decided to take part in the competition instead of making a full recovery. His dribbling and speed wasn't the same after that so he began the transition away from a showman into a prolific goalscorer. Before Messi became relevant, people used to make dribbling videos comparing young Ronaldo and Ronaldinho which speaks for itself

Young ronaldo already used to score a lot of goals, he even had 40+ goal seasons. As he got older he started to dribble less but became more effective as a player and consistently scored 50-60 goals a season for like 7-8 years straight, which is insane considering that Lewandowski was the only player in europe to score over 50 goals last season.
