Most people think the slapstick comedy in bond films started in the Roger Moore era. The reality is that it started in Diamonds Are Forever.

hugodrax71 Nope, you probably just prefer Moore Bond films which is why you are saying that. Moore was more of a joker than Connery was, and since you see Bond the most in the movies then you are seeing more humor with Moore's Bond movies.

I think Charles Gray was the best Blofeld... he is the one BIG redeeming feature in "Diamonds are Forever". I feel a bit sorry for him in this scene. There is a legend that as a very young actor, CG met Aleister Crowley on a train and modelled much of his subsequent act on him.
@TimParker-Chambers
@TimParker-Chambers Жыл бұрын
I didn't know that, but, from what I've read about how people have described Aleister Crowley, I can certainly believe it; that cold, precise, aloofness is certainly something people have said about Crowley...

Yes. Bond kills him, finally getting revenge for Tracy. YOLT was the first time the producers basically disregarded the novel's story, which was a necessity after switching the order of the books. It set, imo, a bad precedent.

@@Cartoonicus DAF is very different in the novel and there's no Blofeld. Blofeld kills Tracey in OHMSS, leaving Bond a wreck. He gets sent on a supposedly easy mission to Japan in the next novel YOLT to see whether there's any hope of him being any use again.
@Cartoonicus
@Cartoonicus Жыл бұрын
@@zacmumblethunder7466 Yes, DAF is actually the one book I've ever read (listened to on tape) so I know it has absolutely nothing to do with the movie. What I'm referring to, is since YOLT was supposed to be Connery's last movie, is it possible Blowfeld was supposed to finally meet his end after 5 movies of being the overarching Nemesis, but since we never saw a body, they decided, instead, to bring him back in OHMSS?
@zacmumblethunder7466
@zacmumblethunder7466 Жыл бұрын
@@Cartoonicus Sorry, I misunderstood. I've read a history of the films and it seems they didn't put that much thought into story arcs or continuity. Back then everything, not just Bond, was done as a series of one off stories. With no home entertainment, very few re-releases at cinemas and only random TV showings to bring in further income, there wasn't much incentive to build the sort of franchises we see now. Also it was far more difficult for fans to study the films, especially when they bore only passing resemblance to the books. I suspect Blofeld was going to be a recurring villain like Sherlock Holmes's Moriarty, until, well, until DAF.

And he said one of the biggest blooper lines (that actually made it into a film) of the series. "That was stirred, not shaken, that was right wasn't it?" And Bond didn't say "WRONG!" You can actually see "Mr. Henderson" stir the martini so he did state what he did, but got it wrong for Bond.

I really hate the ending to this film. Blofeld just vanishes without explanation. They don't show him dying, they don't show him getting wounded, they don't show him escaping, he just disappears. Pleasance was the perfect Blofeld, IMHO. He pretty much got the character from the books down pat: a ruthless, emotionless sociopath. Savalas was OK, but he injected too much smug and smarm. As for Gray, I remember reading a review on Amazon saying that he came off more as a disgruntled waiter than a criminal mastermind. I concur.

He isn't seen again for 10 years so you could assume that. However, it transpires he is in a wheelchair in FYEO so you can assume he survived the destruction of the oild rig with serious injuries and decided to lay low for several years and then go after Bond when he least expected it. I believe his remains were found when a power station chimney was demolished.

Well, that's definitely YOLT. Although, to be fair, they would have had to make significant changes to the novel even if OHMSS had come first. It's a very good book but it's very dark and brooding. Bond spends much of the book understandably depressed and isn't paying much attention until he realizes that Dr. Shatterhand (his target) is actually Blofeld in disguise. The book also ends on a down note, with Bond having total amnesia, headed for Russia, and unaware that Kissy has had his child.

Bond movies use to have a great sense of humor now they are deadly serious. How about that torture scene in Casino Royale? My nutz were hurting too after I watched that scene. YIKES!!!

We often wonder if Bunt had been eliminated, as she is never seen again, but she was acting on Blofeld's orders so Bond would be more interested in him.

In the next James Bond Film, Blofeld should be the new head of Quantum.

@tinavjohn Confusingly, that's called "007 Theme", as opposed to the famous "James Bond Theme". It's used in a number of the Bond pictures when they want some old-school feel.

The Bond Girl from View To a Kill is the most annoying Bond girl ever. Jill St. John was fucking hot.

Enh, I've never actually read the books; when it comes to spy literature, I like the stuff by John le Carre. Though, YOLT is probably one of my favorite Bond movies from childhood, as I tend to prefer the ones that are more brazenly over-the-top and cartoonish.

@Darkstar263 Yup, couldn't agree more. Richards was crap, but she didn't manage to annoy me in the same way as Halle Berry. Berry's character was just infuriatingly smug. Crap Bond-girl-o-meter: [Better] - Britt Ekland (Mary Goodnight, The Man With The Golden Gun) - Jill St John (Tiffany Case, Diamonds Are Forever) - Tanya Roberts (Stacey Sutton, A View to a Kill) - Denise Richards (Christmas *sigh* Jones, The World Is Not Enough) - Halle Berry (Franchise Jinx, Die Another Day) [Worse]
