Hello Road video - • DeLorean DMC-12 Review...
The body design of the DeLorean was a product of Giugiaro of Italdesign; to create the car, Giugiaro drew inspiration from one of his previous works, the Porsche Tapiro, a concept car from 1970.
All DeLoreans left the factory with body panels made of brushed stainless steel except for three cars that were plated in 24-karat gold as part of an American Express promotion. Painted DeLoreans do exist, although these were all painted after the cars were purchased from the factory.
Another distinctive feature of the DeLorean is its gull-wing doors. The doors could only have small cutout windows since full-sized windows would not be fully retractable within the short door panels.
When it comes to the power and drivetrain, the DeLorean was not really something to write home about. 0-60mph took around 9.5-10 seconds while the competitors of the time averaged around 7.5 seconds for the same sprint.
When you look at the power output, it makes sense since the DeLorean only generated 130hp and 153 lb-ft of torque from its 2.8L V6.
You could get your DeLorean with either a 5 speed manual or a 3 speed automatic.

The biggest error for the DMC-12 was indeed the engine taken from Renault. A modernize version with a modern turbocharged V or Flat 6 and suspension would be great.

Everytime I watch your videos I want to learn how to manufacture just so I can bring these designs to life. This car would be one of the sickest designs on the road today, not only because it's recognizable but because the generations who grew up knowing this car are still around to truly appreciate it.

Super cool. Imho, the only weakness of this redesign is that there's no memory of the triangular fake window in the sides. I think it would be lovely to see a version of this which features a redesign of this too: i.e. it could be dealt as a small depression of the surface with the old small black vent transformed into a side direction light. Congratulations anyway for this amazing job

It's better than the first one you did. I think you're still going to need to come back to this in the future. Modern cars usually have less front overhang. For a rear engine car, that is not necessary anymore. You should keep the 4 headlights, but make them slim rectangular LCDs. The rear side windows should stay. You're missing the upturned lower front style of the original. That could be brought down some with a shorter front overhang, but it is important to match the front and rear upturn along the bottom. In my opinion, you could bring the a-pillars forward a bit to add to the angular design.

With modern tech I imagine the sharp wedge nose of the Tapiro (sp?) might be able to have the headlights embedded right at the edge line, with some sort of transparent cover that follows the lines of the design, that may perhaps also double as an optical element to help achieve the desired shape and intensity distribution of the light beam.

I Like it. You did a good job on the chop without letting Knight Industries puke on the canvas. You went through a few of the same issues I had making a chop of it. GM absolutely raped this design in the 80s and used it on all of their cheaper cars, probably to mockingly cheapen DeLorean's efforts. There is the Chevy Monza, Pontiac Sunbird, Chevy Citation, and Camaro z28 all in that front end design that are identified as GM and NOT DeLorean. It was a direct piracy of the design while he was going through the legal troubles he was set up for, like rubbing salt in the wound.

Personally,if u want to redesign the delorean i would suggest ditch the gull wing doors and switch to Lamborghini doors. Ditch the stainless steel outside and just do a good rustproofing to the body, and powder coat the frame. Give ppl the ability to actually pick the color of the car. Give it a tuned v6,v8,or a turbo 4 cylinder. Maybe even a v10. Could be fun

I have a highly different idea, by changing the door base, into something of a Ferrari Enzo, which had a very different approach to the wing doors, alongside all other requirements, but make the car faster, and a bit more aerodynamic, by changing it to a 5 second acceleration 0-60MPH, and a 150 MPH max speed, alongside changing the car into an all-electric supercar. How I believe it should be done for the front and rear, would involve the front light(s), to probably be at the same area, of the original model grill, while the blinkers are actually in the headlight area of the model. The rear end would likely stay the same, but there would be a small in the middle, to meet competition, then blinkers are wider. However, all lights on the body, are likely LED lights, due to how long they can last, as much as the original model would stand many tests of time. The only difference I think can change in the front frame, is likely going to based on a Lamborghini Venino; which is also an iconic car, despite the small number produced. Either that, the present day Corvette, or a McLaren from the 2010's. Although Bugatti's signature grill in its hypercars would look nice, the problem is that it may be hard to produce, unless a light stream is used. To keep with the theme of the future, I believe that it might work, to actually use an idea from the Lamborghini Terzo Millenio; a concept car that features actual lighting on its rims, alongside the concept of the all-electric engines, lightweight frame, and sleek style, that would be used, originally for the future of racing. The only difference, in the wheel, is an optional neon ring, for areas that legalize neon lighting. The rims can also have customizations, using the classic rims, or by rim concepts commonly found on supercars. The decal is also optional, but there will also be more variety, on the decal; from curves, to the original stripe design.

The DMC-12 was likely meant to have the GM developed Wankel Rotory engine that was being developed for a Corvette. The engine would have been about as powerful a V8 at the time, but as cancelled do to a change of Gm Executive leadership and some F/econ and emissions hurdles it was deemed too expensive to clear, despite some insider statement saying GM had it licked. Given that GM would actively seek to cancel the Corvette in the 1980s, there would be no C4 Corvette, any efforts to expand on the Corvette and GM's performance acumen were swept aside. As a result the engine that would have fixed the DMC-12 performance woes outright was never built. And by the time GM did have an engine, the 3.8 OHV V6 which was as robust as the V8, DMC was out of business.

The design is very appealing. Just bear in mind that many countries require turn signals at the front, in addition to the sides. I think that the retro design fits well into modern times and deserves a comeback. Also, a slanted front glass for the lights will make it more streamlined, like the classical Citroen DS and Citroen SM models. This will also pause no cooling problems for electric conversions of the DeLorean, which are becoming trendy among owners.

I feel like the aerodynamics of the redesign would actually be worse than the original. If you look at the bumper of the original you can see a lip designed for airflow. If you look at the redesign, it has a lip too but has more of a just for looks feel to it and i imagine it's more like a brick. Could look somewhat better if it had more of a 88 fc rx7 front but have the headlights more where the running lights are on the original DMC instead of popup headlights.
