Man I was lucky to see Roc Raida more than once live and he was such a chill guy. One time I saw him battle Lord Finesse in Toronto and Grand Wizard Theodor had a set during the after party. The other time i saw him in Hamilton Ontario and after the set I went on stage to talk to him and the manager of the place came up on stage and told me to get off the stage. Roc Raida told the manager to get off the stage and we kept talking about all things hop hop. RIP to one of the best Djs ever and a real nice guy.

Man that's how we usually are. Ron G, Clue, Jazzy Jeff, FunkFlex before car show a bunch... It was all love as long as you didn't do 3 things. 3. Start a fight that causes danger or harm 2. Interrupt us in a set especially to ask for a song played before or you asked for before. Top Number #1 thing. DON'T BUMP THE DAMN TABLES! LMAO 😂 I have stopped an entire party cause of that. Many have... That person gotta be moved far away from us!

I remember seeing Roc at an Executioners show with Common. Some cat in the audience brought his records and challenged him to a battle right there. He took the kid up on his offer and proceeded to smoke him although the kid was good. It was all love at the end but he gave dude a chance to shine. Much respect to a legend. RIP

Dude was smoother than butter and ruffer than sandpaper.. No dvs, laptop, his cue points are stickers ..this set shows not only his banging turntablistics but also his impeccable timing and knowledge of records. Around the 230 mark when he lets the mix go hands off and it mixes in at perfect tempo... Dude is a serious legend and he's one of the reasons why I started DJing.

Before the 44-7's, before skipless records, before serato you had to have the magic touch, even then the record skipped, even on this routine!

^ yes! This is interesting. It took a while before Shure started marketing them to Turntablists. I would like to know more of how the M44-7/G became the "standard" (or one of the standards).

^^ A few DJs in Europe, especially Japan were already using it for years in DJ battles. in the US- and from what I know....D Styles was the one who used them a lot and showed them to me. Then we told Q about it and looked all over Japan during our next tour and bought out every back stock of em at every DJ store we went into. Finally contacted the Shure HQ's in Evanston, IL and found a rep who slightly had to to something with them. We pushed them to revive the model and helped re build the phono line at the company. They've been down since then....RIP Jimmy Needlz..

I can always see the heart an culture of original New York city hip hop deajaying in his style. You can tell he was influenced and inspired by the original true djs of the time. He had great vibes when I dapped him up, a true legend. So sad he didn't have more time to enjoy his success.

The vinyl skillz are, to me, what separates the New DJs from the Old Skool. Cats juggling wax have, in my humble opinion, an edge up on those mix masters whose crates are 1s and Os. But please know my comment is only a personal observation and no way a slight on the AMAZING digital DJ we thankfully have making their own art

i dunno about the rest of Europe mate but Ireland (where I'm from) was on it just as early as the UK, about 81/82. For instance, Public Enemy played in Dublin in 1988, one of their first live shows on their debut headline act tour. Most of the big cities in Ireland had a hip-hop scene which included the music, the graffiti, the fashion and very importantly the dancing.
