-Composer: Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich (25 September 1906 - 9 August 1975)
-Orchestra: WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne [WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln]
-Conductor: Rudolf Borisovich Barshai
Symphony No. 6 in b minor, op. 54, written in 1939
00:00 - I. Largo
18:53 - II. Allegro
24:39 - III. Presto
When Shostakovich was writing this symphony in 1939, the artistic atmosphere in Soviet Russia was in a transitional state. Though government censorship was still pervasive, composers were encouraged to write anti-German propaganda, at least until the period of the Nazi-Soviet treaty. When Germany invaded, of course, Soviet cultural bosses were forced to turn their attention to the war, and anti-German music came back into fashion.
Shostakovich had indicated his intention to write a choral symphony about Lenin in 1938, but would not get around to it for another 22 years, until the Symphony No. 12 (1960-1961). He undoubtedly felt compelled to write patriotic music -- or to promise to do so -- since he had already incurred the wrath of party censors with his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, which was banned in 1936. His decision to abandon the idea of composing a Lenin symphony instead of his purely instrumental Symphony No. 6 probably had something to do with fears that if such a patriotic work were greeted unenthusiastically by party arts officials, he might end up in a labor camp or cemetery with some of his less fortunate colleagues. Perhaps he sensed that Stalin may not have wanted all the glory and attention of the Revolution attributed to Lenin, and thus decided to steer clear of the idea for the time being.
In any event, Shostakovich produced a work whose gloomy and intense opening panel is counterbalanced by a pair of jovial and light movements. Put together, they are shorter than the opening Largo, and the contrast presented by their cheerfulness and wit gives the symphony a somewhat split personality. The main theme of the first movement is presented in the lower strings: it is a muscular, dark melody that is repeated in many guises during the exposition. A new theme finally appears on the English horn to launch the second subject group, and then the material is reprised, but in a much more compact way.
The second movement is marked Allegro and immediately takes on a playful character. While the music and orchestration sound like Shostakovich, the spirit of Prokofiev seems to hover above. Although there is some tension and conflict in the middle section, the impression left by this Scherzando is one of joy and good humor.
The finale, marked Presto, is exuberant, almost ecstatic throughout most of its duration. Even the subdued and brief middle section seems eager to hand the reins back to the infectious good spirits of the main material. The ending is one of the most joyous, colorful, and unpretentious the composer ever wrote. There is neither bombast here nor an extraneous note.
Shostakovich's Symphony No. 6 was premiered on November 5, 1939, and received little notice. Coincidentally, Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky, a product of the anti-German tendency then prevalent, also received its first performance at the same concert, garnering much acclaim. Some have conjectured that Shostakovich may have been fortunate that his symphony drew little attention, for Soviet censors might have singled out the tragic first movement as too cerebral and confusing. A typical performance of the work lasts just under 30 minutes.

The pain and loss in this symphony is quite vivid, yet I also find it somehow lighter and more optimistic than his other works. Obviously that's not saying much if you think of the 5th and the 8th. There's a romantic feel to it, even a feeling of the beauty of nature (especially in the long and delicate flute solos) and at times it reminds me emotionally of the long adagio from Mahler's 4th. The suffering feels less personal, and the relative light of the first movement is then fully released in the subsequent scherzos. This work is often at the bottom of people's lists of his symphonies, but I think it's quite wonderful, an overlooked minor masterpiece.

Highlights: 1:26 5:16 8:48 14:26 17:14 21:07 23:33 26:31 28:19 This symphony is absolutely underrated. The sheer contrast between the first, emotionally pulverizing movement and the sardonic yet jolly last two is shocking. The first movements has sickening lows and absolutely heartbreaking highs. The middle climax of the movement stands out to me, I think what makes me love this movement so much is the last 5 minutes of the piece starting from the horn solo 15 minutes in. It's incredibly powerful, sad writing, and it really surprises me that this work, just by the first movement, isn't more recognized along his other great symphonies. The last two movements are just plain fun. On their own they don't really stand for much - on the surface they're just catchy tunes (with some really interesting solos). But the fact that they follow the depressing first movement makes the writing that much more ironic and interesting to listen to. Overall, it's an incredible symphony that really deserves more praise.

@mason3845
@mason3845 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not exactly sure, but my best guess would be that since many symphonies have a slow second movement, with a typical symphony having 4 movements, this symphony's 1st movement is likened to that of a typical symphony's 2nd movement , as this symphony only has 3 movements, and its first is slow.

I also am a bit puzzled as to what is not to understand. Perhaps on purely musical terms it might be a little bit of an enigma, how these 3 movements constitute a single work. But if one considers the time and situation it was written, it is not hard to understand at all. But I also have to say that whoever wrote the introductory text in the video description did also seem to miss the mark. You have to be pretty shallow to describe the finale as exuberant and joyful. It is the same exuberance and joy that can be found in the finale of Tchaikovsky's 4th. It is fake. A facade.

It's a bit like the 6th is meant to be a "complementary twin" of the fourth symphony. The latter begins extremely emotional with the cry of thousands of tortured souls and ends eerie, hopelessly tragic. The Sixth however kind of tells how the story continues: It begins in a somewhat limbus/meditation-like state and steers visibly to an emotional state (in the final measures of mvt 3) as extreme as the beginning of no. 4, but on the very different end of the scale. It reminds me always of the end of G. Orwell's "1984"

If you watch Bernstein’s KZfaq video about this underrated symphony, he talks about the similarities to Tchaikovsky 6 - both sixth symphonies, both in B minor, both containing long slow movements. This symphony, S6, could be thought of as a continuation to T6, since according to Bernstein T6 is the first symphony in history to end on a long slow movement while S6 is the first symphony in history to begin on a long slow movement. There are some musical similarities too, such as both symphonies beginning with a slow theme in E minor.

Shostakovich must’ve had a thing against Eb clarinets because the solo in the beginning of the second movement is just stupidly difficult.

Listen to the Largo, (Mvt. 1)...the pedal F with the trills in both the Celli and Violas. Two flutes have the most bizzare of conversations. This is the music of the subconscious, the Unconscious and the comatose. How am I to pay attention to the latter two movements after being in receipt of the Largo? Apologies... I will try to concentrate here.

Unlike what everyone says, I feel this is not that similar to Unfounded Revenge. It was probably a minor I spiraton, though.
