I believe they do get paid quite well in Japan. That and the sheer experience of playing in Japan I reckon is more than enough for anyone to at least consider it. Kubiak played in Japan as well and so did Kaziyski who is now a starter in Trentino so not even that bad for your career to go there I'd say :D

guessing it’s about salary and also injury, on the russian national team, he has to play Middle and the fact that most 7foot athletes easily get injured is a risk since international level volleyball requires him to exert more effort whilst here he can play as an opposite and take it slow, be given high sets and not make risky plays

he was middle blocker until london 2012 when he was swapped to opposite in the finals. he continued play a mix of opp and mb afterwards and now just plays opposite

He is Opposite, however in rotation 1 (Setter is in postion 1) while reciving outside closer to the setter is attacking from right side and opposite from left
