This is my favorite song of all time as DMX is my favorite rapper of all time. I listened to this song constantly to understand where DMX came from with his raw energy and aggression in all he does. This was great storytelling in a song to cherish.

For anyone curious: that opening line "to live is to suffer..." is a quote from 19th century German philosopher Friederich Nietzche. I always thought it was cool DMX used that line.

The cool concept about this song is that everybody has been where this song has been. And you could actually be in that position now where you are slipping and you're falling and you can't get up. This song let you know that you can't give up, you got to get up and you have to get back on your feet so you can tear it up. And this song to me is one of the greatest songs of DMX has ever done. Everybody has been through this stage in their lives and if they haven't there about to go through the stage. And if he can get up then all of us can. And if you're reading this and this touches your soul, this message is for you. You may be slipping , you may be falling but you can get up.

I’m so glad that you got the point to this song. Right off the get go with they first line. To live is to suffer but to survive is to define meaning into suffering. Slippin is my all time favorite DMX song. His vulnerability, word play and story telling made him unique and legend. FYI Ruff Ryder’s Anthem was his least favorite song. He did cause he lost bet and wrote it in 15 min. As he said it was elementary for him. His word play and his rap skills are a lot deeper than that.

I get chills every time I hear this song, even after literally 1,000+ times. ❤️ DMX is King with the beautiful heartfelt religious songs. I love his catalogue. As much as I love his harder stuff. THIS & his prayers, Damien songs...they are ones that will touch your soul. 🔥❤️ Edit: That’s Ruff Ryders Anthem, many of his best songs aren’t necessarily “popular” outside of long time fans. Not that his bangers aren’t great too. ✌️

In my early recovery from my drug addiction this song helped me....literally helped me not relapse. Form the interviews I've seen with DMX he says this song is about his crack addition. When u are in active addiction u have mental breakdowns those 2 things always go together. Thats why u have to take care of your mental health in order to stay clean& sober. DMX is a poet

Clean version was all that was officially released, even on the explicit cd. Dj Shok (RuffRyders) produced it, and sampled Moonstreams, by Grover Washington Jr. Owners to rights of Moonstreams only approved use if it was a clean song. Later on some dirty versions were leaked. Some without the female vocals. There is one version that has all the words including, damn look how the rock got em. And one that has rock blanked out.

Classic. Funny enough the song is censored on the album as well, that was the only way the artist they sampled would clear the song. They would only clear it if it had no curses on it.
