This is cool! All of my maternal grandma's children are represented by either their own test or 1 or more of their children have tested. All of her children are now deceased. We have almost 94% of Grandma's DNA represented and almost 53% of her mother's DNA represented. Unfortunately, the majority of them are not represented on GEDMatch. I manage the DNA of two 1st cousins and one my now-half brothers(they are identical twins). There are 10 more 1st cousins available for testing, but not all are willing. I haven't yet found any descendants from my great-grandma's sisters in my match lists. This still gives me hope on that 2nd great-grandma puzzle. Maybe some day! Thanks for a great explanation of this tool. Have a blessed day.

Although I have used WATO before, I didn’t realize that this tool existed. I have been slowly testing my family and think this will greatly help me know where to test next. This video was a great first tutorial cause I don’t know that I would have know where to start. I have several unknowns in my tree. I think this will help me identify who to test next. Thanks for making me aware.

I’ve been creating Lazarus kits at GEDmatch and this tool would be great for figuring out which ancestors I have enough DNA from to create a useful kit and which relatives I most need to persuade to upload there.

This was a very good demonstration on how to use this new tool. Andy always explains the hows and whys of tools that can seem complicated initially and he makes them feel more user-friendly.

A very interesting and useful tool, probably more so if you have a large fairly close knit family that don't live too far from each other, but for many of us I suspect this isn't the case. Also with certain parts of the family having fallen out with each other the closest people who haven't tested that might be useful aren't really an option to ask. The ones that might be useful looking at your chart I don't know personally, and don't even know if they are still alive so the only option of finding them is either genealogical research (which won't in most cases include living people) or when they test, which is of course of use in my research, but I can't really ask people to test who I have no relationship with in the real world. Basically isn't it obvious that the best person to test is the oldest person willing to test either from your own branch or from a different branch (as they will have inherited some different DNA from the common ancestor)? But who should test next is most of the time out of your control (once you've tested direct or very close relatives). I tested my grandpa on his 100th birthday (well shortly afterwards because we were all celebrating too much to have him spit in a tube), but all his brothers and sisters were dead by this stage, as was his wife (so my mum and her cousins are next for her branch), and asking DNA matches to help in the best of scenarios doesn't often work very well, it's a bit hit and miss, so it's difficult.

Using descendancy research techniques, you can actually find many of the living individuals who might be able (or might have already) taken DNA tests. While doing descendancy research, you may discover that your family tree has small generations making it nearly impossible to have success with DNA testing (my wife's tree is like this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/prB0nauYlpm1l30.html) Our, you might discover how your matches are related to you without necessarily contacting them. Many of the obstacles you list require good paper trail genealogy skills which my wife teaches on this channel.

I'm the youngest in my generation (and the only one who is likely to ever test), some of my half siblings have already passed away and it has been decades since anyone in my parents generation was alive. I have several matches but an unknown MRCA with them so it's always difficult to know who to approach, at best we are looking to try and establish a link over four or possibly 5 generations to the MRCA, along with the speculative nature of the MRCA we will never be able to fill a high percentage of the DNA of our descendants but using 1c1r's seems to be my best (only) option. I currently have almost no nails left as I'm chewing them waiting on a result coming through on Ancestry that could shift the focus of my research in a totally new direction. I wish DNA testing was more widely taken up in the UK but it is what it is and we can only do what we are able to.

You mentioned the dead cannot be tested. I have a substantial lock of hair from my grandmother who died about 1940. Can you suggest a way to get this tested?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics Жыл бұрын
You can test that, but there's no guarantee that the lock of hair or stamps are really your ancestor. So be prepared for confusion. Can you get DNA from stamps or hair samples? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sL-bfcacsNbLonk.html
