"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

What makes them the most conservative Dem voters? Just because they don’t vote for progressives means that maybe there’s something wrong with how the progressives are campaigning. @@prestonrasmussen1758 I wouldn’t consider them as conservative as much as not convinced that more progressive Democrats will actually help them. The democratic party, regardless of what you think of them, have given Black people a seat at the table. Many Black voters (who are the base of the democratic party) may understandably find it odd when outsiders want to dismantle the one organization that they have some political power in. Also, regarding the Bernie voters point, I’m not sure if that’s true, but even if I take your word for it, it still doesn’t take away the fact that Black voters are the most reliable voting block for the party.

@@Shaheen767 It's logistically ridiculous to have a state that hasn't been won by a Dem since Carter the most powerful position. You want a state in the South to be the first primary, go with Georgia, which was won by the Dems in the last Senate runoff and a few presidential election, and it has a larger portion of black citizens than SC. Also, the entire conversation is 100% disingenuous, because it ignores why party lines exist like they do. It's true that the average black Dem tends to be more conservative than the average white Dem. But that's not because black voters are more conservative, it's because black conservatives still largely vote for the Dems, on account of the racist policies of the Southern Strategy, while white conservatives vote GOP.

I AGREE with the changes to the primary, BUT I think ANY changes should take affect AFTER 2024 to avoid these optics, but ideally I think the primary should be done in ONE night, like the general. And those crying about being "first" can fuck right off with that.

Why can't they just rotate? Like have 6 groups and group 1 votes Jan, group 2 Feb, and so on. Convention in July, and nominee has the rest of the time to focus on the General Election. And each year the groups shift forward in position with the previous group 1 now being group 6.

Saw an MSNBC clip interviewing Congressmen Clyburn who's the assistant leader of the Dems about the Presidents upcoming State of the Union address and he quoted Biden saying "Don't compare me to the Almighty, compare me to the alternative" and it struck me what an awful mentality that is. Firstly, religion needs to get out of politics. The US is not a politically religious country, like Islamic and Buddhist countries, this is a country where you are free to practice any religion or no religion at all. Secondly, and I understand this is an issue with other countries and is just an ideal but elections really should be used to vote someone in you agree with on policy and record not just because you think the other guy is "bad" in your eyes (although plenty of politicians should have criminal charges put on them but I digress...)

The question of which state would be best to start with is kind of difficult. You do want to have it be a state which is more diverse, but at the same time, you also want it to be a swing state, and also one with a smaller market so that well-funded (that is, corrupt & corporate) candidates don't have a huge advantage. South Carolina does fit 2 of those 3 conditions, and there aren't too many others that do. There are several other states that might fit 2 criteria, but none that fit all 3.
@prestonrasmussen1758

The point Kyle makes at 8:36 is very valid as I have experienced it myself. In my State in Australia, we have our State election at the end of March. I am a member of the left-wing Labor Party. In 2019, there was a vote of members to determine our parliamentary leader. From 2019 to 2021, the winner of that vote was undermined by the loser until she had to resign and the loser became leader unopposed without a membership vote. As a member I haven't forgotten that and will be voting accordingly. It's a little bit of a different situation though given Australia has ranked-choice voting for their elections and I can vote for a left-wing independent/minor party and number the candidates in order of my choice without worrying the right-wing candidate will be elected.

I don't care that south Carolina is going to be first now, but the "cover story" has some merit. A mostly white state has been going first and they set the tone for the election when it's a bunch of dudes in a corn field eating fried food to appeal to white people. Minorities largely vote democrat when they are engaged and are able to vote. Allowing a more minority diverse state to have more of a voice in the early state of the election is needed. New Hampshire and other states are mad b/c they are loosing some priviledge. And I recognize south Carolina is probably being picked 1st b/c of biden but the state order has been pretty shit for decades, long before biden got a leg up in SC.
