@@DnD_Daily Taking benefits of Ancestral Guardian debuff, I think it's best to make a range melee barbarian. A bugbear AG barbarian 3+/ Echo knight 11+ with a reach weapon can do melee attack 45ft away from the enemy (Echo 30ft away plus 15ft reach). With Rage/ reckless attack/ GWM, we can do great dmg like normal barbarians; With action surge and Unleash Incarnation per attack action, we can deal nova dmg if needed; With 45ft distance, the enemy can't get close unless it has great mobility or range attack, and will probably suffer Ancestral Guardian debuff. I believe this build is more effective than the barbarian archer build.

So, my barbarian rogue actually ended up going in a different direction using a shield and rapier reflavored as an agile spear using rogue mostly for the hit and run tactics with the mobile feat, bonus action dash, and unarmored movement making me a very fast with a 100ft dash. I ended up putting most of my ASI's into feats getting medium armor master, mobile, and the tough feat. I ended the build at 14th level with a party fully of ranged combatants other than myself.

Killer build man. If I may give my two-cents, I'm surprised you didn't go one dip into Peace Cleric before or after picking up your fighter levels. Emboldening Bond would synergies greatly with your 30ft range sweet-spot. Start combat off with Action to get the bond going, then use your Bonus Action attack with the +D4 to insure you hit a target. Also, the idea of a spiritual warrior who wanted to get a closer connection to the afterlife by becoming a worshiper of some deity still gives some good flavor to the character. Everything else you mentioned sounds exceptional, and this is definitely a future class I'd like to try out!

Honestly Rage damage bonuses are not a big deal. Having an Archer who can stay alive is a good thing. Heck I have played a primarily melee Barbarian and 20% I have ended up using a longbow. Any adventurer should have options for both melee and ranged, and should be prepared to be effective in sub-optimal situations.

I've always been surprised by the counter-intuitive synergy between rogue and barbarian. One class ostensibly looks dex-only and the other str-only, but it's fun to look for ways to make a str-based barbarian/rogue (great grappler). I'd never really looked for ways to do it dex-based (let alone at range), and this was pretty neat. Also, I love the flavor with Phantom you suggested at the end. I may have to try something like this some time.

Actually you don't need to attack with dex in 5e for sneak attack, you just need to use a finesse weapon and use strength - Ps. Reckless attack to get sneak attack 👀

@robertvanark1800 Жыл бұрын
@@calcymon89 I know. That’s why I felt it’s counterintuitive. With the rogue’s proficiency in only light armor, they rely on Dex for even a modest AC. Seeing Sneak Attack proc only with ranged or finesse weapons, my mind immediately goes to Dex, but you’re right. You don’t HAVE to use Dex with a finesse weapon. And yeah, Reckless Attack and Sneak Attack work nicely. They’re also really good grapplers. There are better ways to do it outside of core, but a 1/1 barbarian/rogue can grapple with advantage and expertise.

@@robertvanark1800 it is a great combo in that none of the abilities lock you out of using Str or Dex. Its why I hate that for other classes things are way more restrictive. A Str monk for example I believe does not work with most of your abilities. Or Dhampir only being allowed to use Con to do their bite attack so you cannot make it work with any class abilities.

@@robertvanark1800 personally I don't see them as counter intuitive I think it's more of a perception issue that people have with the barbarian. One of my favorite builds I've ever made was a 5lvl barbarian 15 lvls rogue that specialized in grappling. Having a +17 in athletics with advantage on grapple checks and then the grappler feat giving you advantage on your future attacks allowing you to sneak attack is just really fun.

I've been thinking of trying a Kalashtar Soulknife Rogue/Bear Totem Barbarian and playing the "Rage" and psychic blades as letting the Quori more fully take over the Human's body. It has resistance to all damage and does some nice psychic damage even if you use strength. Take the Barbarian to 9th level and save the sneak attack for if you hit that crit. It's also a nice build out of combat as the Soulknife gives you some good bonuses to skill checks, too.
@jugglejunk

Alternatively I think that taking the last 6 lvls in peace domain helps a lot. Communal hp, resistance to all damage, they take damage any time they hit someone that isn't you and you have a Channel divinity that works while raging. I'll be going metallic dragonborn (copper, cause least immuned) with the racial fear feat.

I built one VERY similar for a lvl 11 campaign but focused Strength and used thrown weapons like spears. Bugbear ancestral barb6/phantom rogue 5. Alternative build was zealot Barb 3/fathomless warlock x using thrown weapon (trident) and pact of the blade to smite from range and really entice them to come at me. Use tentacles to lock down and slow them as needed while buffering damage.

Steady Aim, if you take Rogue, means we can actually do great with an Elf by grabbing the Elven Accuracy feat instead of Crossbow Expert, but, that being the case, I would recommend the Scout subclass, so we can always have a reaction to move away from anyone who tries to close in on you.

For the support role I'd say Gloomstalker Ranger is also a good option for multiclassing, perhaps the best available. You already have the DEX and WIS, it gets you a Fighting Style for Archery, some out of combat healing with Goodberry, with Tasha's it gets you Deft Explorer for 2 extra languages and Canny for double proficiency in a skill (Perception or Athletics are top candidates), and Favored Foe nets you 1d4 extra damage on that one hit a round you need to hit, which you can concentrate on while in Rage since it's not a spell and it doesn't eat any action economy to compete with Crossbow Expert or Rage. And that's just from being Ranger. Gloomstalker then also nets you Darkvision to 60', WIS to Initiative, +10' movement on the first round of combat to better guarantee good positioning, and on your first round of combat you get an extra attack, which can make up for the bonus attack from Crossbow Expert being lost if you Rage on the first turn. Then being invisible in darkness against anything with Darkvision, which comes up very often in D&D, is incredibly powerful when paired with Ancestral Protectors since the ability does not require the enemy be able to see you.
@theknight1573
@theknight1573 Жыл бұрын
Hate to break it to you, but you cannot concentrate on Favored Foe or most if not all concentration without a spell abilities. The reason being that they all include the "as if you are concentrating on a spell". So concentrating on an ability is functionally exactly the same as concentrating on a spell and thus impossible while raging. Tho run this by your DM, cuz if it makes sense they might make an exception. Just know it also works for the enemy bandits haha
@joocebocks8610
@joocebocks8610 Жыл бұрын
@@theknight1573 Not true. Rage says "If you are able to cast spells, you can't cast them or concentrate on them while raging." It specifically specifies you cannot concentrate on spells, not that you cannot concentrate on anything that requires concentration. The Favored Foe ability says " for 1 minute or until you lose your concentration (as if you were concentrating on a spell)." The latter note is only specifying you can lose concentration in the same way you could lose concentration on a spell, not that you are concentrating on a spell. Favored Foe is a non-spell ability that can be ended early in the same ways a spell can, following the same rules for losing concentration as a spell would. The Barbarian ability does not state you lose concentration, or that you cannot concentrate at all, merely that you cannot concentrate on spells specifically.

@@joocebocks8610 i mean I agree with you. But I believe by raw, you are to interpret the "as if a spell" that all rules that normally apply to spells, also apply to those effects. Or that might be rai... but it has been a while and I admit I have not looked for a sage advice for it, so I might actually be wrong. And if you should see favored foe as a spell in this regard... that kind of also infers that dispel magic/counterspell could work and Im pretty sure that isnt the intend... Im going to think about it for a while but I think you might be correct and Ive been ruling it wrong

@joocebocks8610 Жыл бұрын
@@theknight1573 "But I believe by raw, you are to interpret the "as if a spell" that all rules that normally apply to spells, also apply to those effects." The question is in the wording indeed, but the ability does not say you concentrate on them as if concentrating on a spell, but rather that you can lose concentration as if concentrating on a spell. There is in fact a big difference between the two. The former would mean that you follow all rules for concentrating on a spell, whereas the latter means you follow rules only as related to losing concentration. The Rage ability is not a standard rule for concentrating on a spell, but rather a specific class rule that has its own specific rules, which specify that you can't cast spells or concentrate on them. Since Favored Foe is not actually a spell in any way, but merely its concentration can be lost as if concentrating on a spell, it doesn't seem to rule as written that Favored Foe should be affected by Rage. Even if you look at the specific rules, the normal ways to lose concentration are casting another spell that requires concentration, taking damage, and being incapacitated or killed. These are the rules that the Favored Foe ability is referencing. Interestingly the RAW also seems to indicate that Hunter's Mark and Favored Foe stack. The reasoning is that the basic rule for Concentration is that, "You lose Concentration on a spell if you cast another spell that requires Concentration. You can’t concentrate on two Spells at once." You don't "cast" Favored Foe, as it's not a spell, thus it does not qualify as a spell that requires concentration, but merely an ability that requires maintaining concentration. The latter point, "You can’t concentrate on two Spells at once.", says "Spells" with capitalization, specifying it's in reference to the Spells mechanic of the game, which again, being a Spell, and being able to lose concentration as if it were a spell, are two vastly different things as rules. This means you should be able to concentrate on two different things, so long as they're not both spells. However, you COULD in the last case rule differently on, "You lose Concentration on a spell if you cast another spell that requires Concentration." If you wanted to rule that " (as if you were concentrating on a spell)" qualifies as concentrating on a spell, while not actually being a spell, you could argue that casting Hunter's Mark while Favored Foe is active would cancel out the concentration on Favored Foe, since a spell was cast while concentrating. I still do not believe this is an accurate interpretation RAW, however, activating Favored Foe cannot in any way be construed as casting a spell, so activating Favored Foe should never break concentration on an already active Hunter's Mark.

I think a single class Path of the Giant Barbarian that max Dex, then Con and Wis as much as you can, might work well. Then get a belt of Hill Giant Strength to be able to grapple and you would fight with an oversized hand crossbow with +10 reach at higher levels. So that would be 3d6 + 2d6 + 5 , (Elemental damage) and you have 3 attacks. With Sharpshooter and Crossbow Expert, and possibly Fighting Style Archery. Takes 3 feats so better start as Variant Human or Custom Lineage. Equipment that you carry with you also increases with you, and oversized weapon is a thing in 5e. You have plenty of rage, and plenty of hp.

I was already leaning this way with a build I made around the Ancestral Guardian. It picked up Shield Master and wielded Spears. Ranger gives expertise in Athletics for those sweet bonus action Shoves. And if you like you can start out with Ranger and have advantage on those dex saves you are now proficient in. 9 times out of 10 this will work just as well as evasion. Anyways, I might go with this build instead as it seems a bit more survivable. Being on the frontline when that big bad really decides to press down on you can be tough. Like this the enemy can choose: Attack your allies and be hugely ineffective, or swallow those oppertunity attacks and attempt to reach you. I would personally go with Ranger because you could cast Longstrider on yourself before combat and have some Goodberries for healing yourself up. A 2 level dip in Ranger would provide you with 20hp in healing, which translates to 40hp if you are raging. That is pretty insane for level 7 or 8. Provided you didn't spend all your spellslots the previous day of course.

I have possibly a better Ranged Barbarian/Rogue build. For this, would build mostly the same, save for taking at least 3 levels of rogue earlier, (perhats at 1st for skills or second if you prefer the Barbarians starting HP) and focusing more on Strength than Dex. Reason being is due to the Rogue Subclass and what it grants. That being the Soulknife and their Psychic Blades, which are simple weapons with the Finesses and Thrown properties. Key thing to note about thes two properties, they both work for Sneak Attacks and neither require you to use Dex. So, you can sneak attack with a Finesse weapon, using Strength, and with a Thrown weapon, using Strength. Thus adding your Strength based Rage Bonus to damage along with Sneak Attack. However, it is a bit debatable how this might work with the Barbarians Extra Attack, though since you manifest a blade when you attack, presumably you could manifest a second with the extra attack than a third for the off-hand bonus attack. For those resistant/immune to Psychic damage, be sure to carry around a good collection of daggers, or if you have an Artificer in the party, have then Infuse a dagger with the Returning property. Note: An Artificer granting you Returning thowing daggers obviously nulifies the need for Soulknife and so free to take any other subclass in this case, or even take the dip into Artificer to give yourself Returning throwing daggers. End note: Added benefit of this build, if the parties main tank falls for what ever reason, you can easily jump in to be a back-up tank, using your Psychic Blades or throwing daggers as melee weapons. Maybe even throw some grappling in there for some Shanking Shenanigans.

I would probably skip crossbow expert for gunner [or just BA steady aim, BA disengage or provoke an opportunity attack to get a better shot], there's kind of a glut of free bonus actions already [entering rage, cunning action, steady aim, second wind°, some maneuvers°] that it's not worth the opportunity cost of taking a full feat for 1 more when the builds payload only depends on 1 hit. And not to be hypocritical but I think your first instinct for Mastermind was the right call here [granted it's a little less flavorful]. It doesn't cost you a feat like cbx, and phantom's main feature, the necrotic splash damage, is pretty unremarkable at the level it comes online and limited until rogue 9, whereas Master of Tactics can be applied selectively at will when relevant and without spending 1 of your 4 or 5 asi's. Similarly with the reaction economy, a big part of the goliath's power budget is in stone's endurance, but you only have 2 uses when it's most useful and later on you get better reactions [uncanny dodge, spirit shield, rogue sneak attacks*, phantom 9's Tokens of the Departed, some maneuvers°*]. Elven Accuracy + Steady aim is hard to pass up, especially if the other conditions for getting sneak attack are unavailable. The Shadar Kai subrace to keep the flavor on point [and a limited feature that will always be relevant], or you could go half elf flavored as a half shadar kai for an additional +1 to stats. Might want to get Sharp Shooter at some point if your dm is meticulous about applying the cover AC benefits. {* requires you to be wielding a melee finesse weapon when enemy provokes it, which is situationally feasible; ° presumes a fighter dip, I would probably go to 4 so you can ultimately get 5 ASI's]

How do you keep rage going? I'd hate to be that rules lawyer, but rage says that it drops the next turn unless 1 you damage or deal damage with (and this is most important) A MELEE STRENGTH BASED WEAPON ATTACK. So a bow or crossbow doesn't work. The only ways I can see this working is if we use our race feature (the old aasimar had a variant that also damages itself) or a racial resistance to fire damage and dousing yourself with expensive alchemists fire.

I love the idea, I've also explored the Phantom/Ancestral Guardian multiclass for flavor. Another way to do this is with a Thrown Weapon Fighting approach, which allows you to continue to use Strength for your ranged and finesse attacks - so you can recklessly throw your daggers with advantage - great for Sneak Attack or just landing hits, and you're less likely to get hit because of attacking at range. I think Echo Knight works great as a Fighter multiclass with this - another way to tank, a way to get opportunity attacks and Rage/Strength bonus damage without putting yourself in harms way, another Echo/Ancestor to role play, even more mobility, and an extra attack with Unleash Incarnation.
