@@NikozBG you do realise that, in order to get started with crafting you need to do Just That; then do everything else on top of it. @@theenduriangamer5509 Most combat encounters are between 3-5 rounds, I don't know where you got your 100 dice rolls from. Also you have so many mitigation mechanics in 5e - the help action, luck, guidance, enhance ability, expertise, reliable talent, etc, etc. And this is the last I would say on that subject - if you don't like it - change it (talk to your dm or make the change yourself if you are one). @@theenduriangamer5509 Crafting has advantages and disadvantage just like in the real world. We all have the ability to make wine, but most people don't want to be bothered to do it when they can buy it for $5 at Walmart. But there is always a chance at messing up, dropping things, or "Gremlins". And if you want a powerful magic item, you can quest for it, buy it (Maybe), or you can try to craft it. And again good and bad things will happen. To think you make it perfect every time, suggests that you are a liar! But if you need things handed to you, because you can't handle working for it. That is kind of on you! I will say everyone here has great ideas. Stop trying to discourage that! I would suggest to you to play video games with crafting, but there is a chance of failure in most of those as well!

If you make use of some kind of inventory management, you don't need to arbitrarily make the parts expire. You could just let players harvest as much as they can carry. If they were to come back later, others will have looted parts, any soft tissue can be eaten by wild animals or start rotting and be unusable that way.

The Rune Knight has the fire rune that can by gained at 3rd level that has a passive ability with a slightly more awkward wording of "your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses your proficiency with a tool." instead of saying expertise, but it still doubles your proficiency. It was probably included because in d&d, giants are known for being crafters.

THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE A ROLE PLAYING GAME. Seriously man, I don't know why WotC can't even produce a tenth of the good ideas people like you bake in their mind, DnD5e is like a first draft of a real game, where they added all the stuff like "alchemy tools" and then totally dismissed any rules to actually use them, leaving just the joke of giving some classes the option to have proficiency in those, just to discover that there's no use to any of it. You made an amazing ruleset for something many players were dying to have in the game. In my campaign it's far too late, but I'm so happy for all those players who will have the option of using this for their fantasy harvesting characters ❤

@@Furyhound Sounds very reasonable. Every time I come up with new creative ways to use my current engineering skills in game. I have to sell the idea, but I know better than asking for all benefits without any mishaps or blunders! There should always be a chance of failure, and everything should require effort and reasoning to create! I would say quality could be how many or how big the bonus is. Or how long it will last before it wears off. And if you roll perfect, that should have some benefit as well! It isn't easy keeping things balanced!

@@tobybigham4196 the number of effects works like a mana system where the most basic ones only use one, these are things like +1 or magic missile with one shot per slot, the higher the level of the effect, the higher the slot count needed to even put it on. And the crafting is treated as a skill check, where certain items can enhance your rolls, like any tool has advantage for its given use. And enchanted tools add their enchantment to the roll instead of their attack or damage.
@tobybigham4196
@tobybigham4196 8 ай бұрын
@@Furyhound That does sound good. I like to think about charges on a wand like Magic Missile. For each quality boost, you would have more charges..... Is that something you would adopt. I just sent an email to my DM discussing this video, and printed off several copies for people to look at. I do like your ideas as well. I plan on suggesting if I could add an infusion for making specific tools that could add +1 to +4 to specific skill checks instead of an actual magic item. Since I am at lvl6 now, I am thinking that crafting should have a range of items considering how little it would do for each specific skill. Like imbuing worker tools! Nothing too imbalanced like imbuing spell foci!

I like 2nd Ed ideas for crafting magic items. Not only do you get components from creatures but also from strange areas or even concepts. Like the first tear of joy shed by an elven princess, a stone that has never seen daylight since its creation, a bottled idea etc. The more powerful the item, the stranger and harder to collect the material

Fun fact, this system is actually something that loot tavern, the makers who helped make ryoko guide, used before in both "heliana's guide to monster hunting" and "L’Arsene’s Ledger of Treasure and Trinkets". interresting to note is that the manufacturing flaws here are different than in the 'Heliana's guide' since that book introduced this concept. it also goes into a lot more into the concept since that book has some more rules on this concept, like rules for hiring craftspeople, optional rules like volatile components or damage rules for harvesting, and third form of crafing called 'forging', which is kind of like a combination of manufacturing and enchanting. the book goes really into detail on this, as well as recipes for srd items. Still i am excited for ryoko's guide, keep up the good work!

I 100% will be steali- uhh, I mean creatively testing some of this PDF material in my campaign. I feel like players making their own magic items can make a player more sentimentally attached to an item which makes giving up that item or that item being destroyed even more devastating. This ultimately adds and feeds into having immersion in a game. The players in my campaign haven't made any magic items yet, but with the harvesting rules and my own thematic mechanics I should be ready for it. Now all I need to do is the figure out how to deal with my Shepard circle druid breaking an encounter with 8 panthers pumped full of temporary hit points form the bear totem (maybe time for a fireball).

Adding to that, I like the following variance for potions; When gaining proficiencies in the Alchemist kit, Herbalism kit, or Poisoner's kit, you can pick up to 3 common magical potion recipes (at the DM's disgression) to memorize. For every player level you gain, having crafted 10 of your memorized potions, you gain 1 mastery level and are able to replace the number of dice rolled with twice the proficiency bonus on the table (mastery table is the same as any class). However, due to the nature of your craft, your potions will remain identifyable as the base potion with equivilent retail value. This means: ~healing potions will take the same crafting time, but maintain the same potentcy as the ones your DM might give you. ~ One cannot cheese the game by marketing this, as it would be a relatively common skill ~ This entices a player and the party to pencil in some crafting, and rewards players who want to pick up multiple proficiencies to play that alchemist. ~It also makes these kits feel more worth taking, as there is now a substancial gain to them.

A cool interaction is Artificer and it’s infinite bird combo. Basically, you make a spellwrought tattoo of find familiar, use it to make a familiar(now no longer consumes infusion slot), then add a spellwrought tattoo to your familiar with find familiar. You either can make the command word a hoot, or find/make a draconian longsword(depends on dm). You continue the chain, marking each bird sequentially with a number. Finally, you command the first bird to command the second bird to obey your commands and command the third bird to obey your commands. Then you go to a small village and slaughter the residents, getting your birds to harvest the commoner’s flesh and the flesh of any livestock/pets.

If you get a chance, I think it would be cool to cover two build concepts: 1. A Sorcerer with one of the following feats: Artificer Initiate or Magic Initiate. Use those feats to gain access to spells the Sorcerer normally can’t, allowing for some whacky combos (e.g. being able to Transmute the druid’s Primal Savagery cantrip or Distant cast any cleric healing spell that is touch-based). 2. Take any caster (even the Paladin) and slap on the Metamagic Adept feat. Which metamagic options would you choose for the various classes?

I was in a campaign in the 3.5 days that used this idea, and it was freaking awesome. Give us a reason for short adventures as a side effect of letting us make the custom gear we want? Perfect! The DM also used an optional rule (which I think was officially printed somewhere) about randomized cosmetic traits for magic items. It made magic items more memorable by giving you an idea how this specific Ring of Evasion looked, and it meant you might be able to identify who made an item by its appearance. My character ended up crafting Cinematic weapons and armor, which sparked excessively whenever they were hit. This also led to a hilarious moment after our fighter looted a Ring of Evasion with the 'Gaudy' appearance: "Why is the guy in armor wearing a drag queen ring?" [Fighter immediately paints the ring matte black]

This system makes the Artificer class specific Arcane focus the All Purpose Tool even better than it already was, since you can literally turn it into any crafting tool and you become proficient with it so you always have someone with the proper tool and proficiency. Huge lifesaver for me coming up on my new campaign. Players are all monster slayers part of an organization, so this'll save me lots of time.

I would be tempted to add some kind of bonus for rangers favoured enemies and harvesting bits

After the bastion system came out today for OneDnD, it feels like they need to tackle crafting next, or at least try to start.

I was actually toying with harvesting rules that are surprisingly similar to these. The main difference from mine is that the assessment check tells the players what parts of the creature are useful instead of contributing to the carving. Also, the characters would make separate carving checks for each part. But frankly, I really like your version too.

LOVE this system!! One small opinion i have is that the assesment check could be Wisdom based. For the simple fact that Survival is wisdom based and is often utilized at tables ive been at for body part harvesting. i feel there is a good way to tie the same ability score in for assesments if they have proficiency. Especially for classes like Ranger. Monster hunter subclass seems so ideal for this, but i can also appreciate that knowing creature anatomy doesnt always translate to understanding crafting viability, but just a thought.

Quirky items are the best... Handed out a defective Sunblade once, it was named Eclipse... On an attack roll of 5 or 15 (on the die, not counting modifiers), the blade fizzled out and needed to be turned on again with a bonus action as per the usual description. Essentially, a light saber that needed irregular percussive maintenance to reignite... This was in AL, and at a later game, one could hear from another table, "Dammit, 15!" "Well, that's enough to hit." "No, my sunblade turned itself off!" "What? Let me see that... who gave you this thing?" And I just raised my hand, "Yo. Problem?" And *both* tables, the unlucky wielder included, cracked up. :D

I’m curious if 1e was researched to help with these rules because it sounds related to stories from my father and his D&D days. I love these crafting rules.

Xanathar's says that you need arcana OR a tool proficiency, and a schematic, and a magical item from a location with a high enough CR rating for the rarity you want to craft (legendary item 19+). The item you need doesn't have to be farmed directly from the monster. The monster could just be guarding the item or attracted to magic at the location in some way. Here's a quest I had an idea for (some of it is more for flavor or to improve the quality of the item being crafted). A Rune Knight (with the smith tools) goes searching for a fire giant smith and impresses him with his skill and gets extra training in smithing. Uses this knowledge to craft better smithing tools and a forge based on giant knowledge. The fire giant gifts him with a schematic for a sword or armor. You travel to the site of an active dragon lair (or other relevant monster), kill the dragon, mine some ore that should be enchanted from being at a dragon's lair and grab a tooth or fang from the dragon (and maybe some blood). Take an extended amount of time crafting the sword or armor and use the claw or tooth to engrave runes onto the item on a daily basis and quench the item in the blood of the dragon. And (according to some of these crafting systems) at the end of this process, you have a plain item that you have to give to the spellcaster to enchant? How would the extra train and improved tools affect these systems? According to the rules in Xanathar's, all of these steps could just be part of the crafting process, and you should have a magical item.

Can’t wait to get the guide! Question, are there rules for upgrading items? Lets say i make a sword with weak essence and het the uncommon version, is there a way to upgrade it later to a very rare version?
