As a prior church kid what this video has shown me is Evangelicals are moving away from the word (bible) in which they claim to follow and creating a version of it to best fits their needs. Which isn't fair to nonbelievers, people should be rightfully informed on what they're getting into so they can make a proper decision. I am an atheist watching this, so take it for what it's worth. Some folks in the video wondered why LGBTQ+ people would often not feel safe in Christian spaces. But a lot of the time in the video is spent debating whether or how or why being LGBTQ+ is wrong. So, why would an LGBTQ+ person feel safe in a space where that topic is debated - is their existence wrong, or is it only that they choose to act on their existence? Put it this way: if there was a space where a LOT of time was spent debating whether Christianity is wrong, a mental defect, naive, or benign - even if they decide after all that discussion that it's benign, Christians won't likely feel comfortable in that space. Why? Because no one wants to be in spaces where their acceptance is constantly debated.
@authorjoannawhite
@authorjoannawhite Жыл бұрын
It's not LGBTQ peoples existence that's being debated. You guys exist (clearly and obviously). What's debated is whether acting upon a desire a person has that's wrong makes it a sin or simply having that wrong desire in the first place. The act of being with someone of the same sex is wrong and sinful. But so is adultry between straight people. So the debate in the latter case would be whether a person is wrong simply for having the desire to commit adultry and cheat on their spouse or whether its only wrong if they act upon that desire.

@@authorjoannawhite, Even with your clarification, I can understand why LGBTQ people would not want to be in Christian spaces. Let's do the reversal I talked about in my earlier comment. You are Christian and you are thinking about whether you feel comfortable in x space. X folks are having endless debates not about whether Christians exist, but whether it is immoral or wrong for them to act on their abberant faith. Not whether believing in Christ is wrong in itself, but whether acting on that abberant belief is worthy of condemnation. But yet, they tell you "You are safe here. We love you! We really do! You can't help being that way. We just don't want you to act on who you are at your very core." That wouldn't make you eager to be in x space, would it?

No one in the Roe v Wade part has anything to say about whether it was actually the correct legal decision for the Supreme Court to be making. They made it about their personal pro-life/pro-choice stances. The Supreme Court's job is to rule based on the language of the Constitution and the precedents it sets. They are judges, not lawmakers. If you want to talk about which laws should be in effect either at a state or federal level, that's a different conversation than whether the Supreme Court is making rulings based off accurate interpretations of what the Constitution says. People are consistently confused about this and I wish the media would do more to clear it up, rather than just continue to stir the pot and profit off the resulting chaos.

I wish there was a question on mission trips! I’d be interested to hear their opinion to see if they acknowledge the negative effects it can end up having on communities. As a former evangelical I often had quarrels in the church with what I now understand it as a form of modern day colonialism. Coming in and out of childrens lives so quickly can cause abandonment issues as well as poor self-worth due to the constant comparisons and rhetoric. Not to mention misconduct that can often happen with power/age dynamics. Even the more progressive evangelicals often refuse to acknowledge the white saviorism complex that occurs in their churches.

There are real missionaries that stay and live in these communities amongst the people for years or decades but those are few are far between. Most are quick week long trips which are definitely outdated and harmful
@JackSmith-ns1uq
@JackSmith-ns1uq Жыл бұрын
There are certainly harmful ways to do mission trips but thats not the majority. There are a ton of ways for the local church to support missions. The first is to help train and equip the people in that country/area so that they can do their own ministry. The second is sending out long-term missionaries and planting churches. For short-term missions (which is what you primarily referred to), you partner with missionaries/organizations that are already established wherever you are going, that way you can support something thats already well established within the community. My church does all of the above, as well as every church within our network. As for it being “colonialism” I find that comment curious as its usually made by people fully support (and often partake) in modern day colonialism which is pushing Western ideas onto other cultures via the internet/media. Because of the internet we dont need to travel to countries to colonize them with our culture/ideas, and so much of the world that doesnt share western culture ideology is significantly more poor, significantly more happy and also very late to internet/media. Because of that, primarily progressives look down on these cultures because they have much more conservative lifestyle views, primarily in areas of race, gender and LGTBQ. I certainly dont agree with all of those ideas (polygamy, incest, and sleeping with minors are also cultural things Ive seem in different parts of the world), but technically if you come into their culture and tell them to do anything otherwise then your colonizing them. And if you think “but thats our moral imperative” congratulations- your a colonizer :)

Why are you acting like Christianity hasn't been changed constantly since it's founding? The Bible is riddled with contradictions and provable changed texts to fit the mainstream belief at the time.

I like this, I wish to see this often cause this type of energy that these sets of Christians that are showing they know what goes on into the Christian community which is wrong and they have they own up to it, apologize and accept they have to change what goes on within there. I dislike Jason ngl cause he reminds me too much of my aunt that nobody likes to bring around to anything with how she acts

If you genuinely believe something is the equivalent of taking a life, you will fight to prevent it (I think 99% of people would agree to this). A lot of people who are pro-life believe abortion is exactly that. I don't think Christians view it as a religious stance but more so a fundamental stance, if that makes sense. Case in point, there are a lot of non-Christian pro lifers out there. I understand the frustration and/or confusion though, it's sticky business :/

Jason seemed like the only one who actually follows the word closely. The rest were injecting their liberal views into their faith as much as they possibly could. Why be apart of a religion if you're going to make it about yourself. Coming from someone who is irreligious. Just seems like a cop-out to blatantly disregard some of the teachings.
