In this episode, we take a look at Japanese Arcade cabinets often referred to as candy cabs.
These candy cabinets are found almost exclusively within Japan, and were rarely shipped outside eastern Asia. However, as the arcade hobby has grown, many have imported these systems into the US for preservation and collection purposes.
Some more well know Candy Cabs:
sega blast city
sega astro city
Sega Aero City

I think these are a great option to run emulation / MiSter / Jamma. I don't really understand the popularity of the Arcade1Up cabinets (besides for looks) that come with 4 games, when you have a control deck layout that can handle and play hundreds of games well.. If it's not original class arcade hardware, then get one cabinet to end all (well maybe most) cabinets!

I feel a weird sense of nostalgia for japanese imports even though I never experienced them when I was a kid. It’s like having access to an alternate universe. I definitely would love to have an Astro city or versus cabinet someday!

I got a Sega Blast City with a MiSTer inside and I absolutely love it. Definitely not something you can just casually get into at this point although unless you have deep pockets. I am restoring a bit at a time and can do the technical work myself and still pushing 4500 invested into it. This includes the cabinet, MiSTer, recapping, reproduction art/decals, buttons, looms/wiring, speakers and misc screws. A spare chassis, yoke and flyback transformers I have on hand also because in 10 years they are going to be near impossible to source. It's like restoring a classic car in many ways except for geeks.

Americans are more into dedicated design-cabs because they attract people more easily, especially when they look at the promo-artwork on the sides of the arcade machines.

Yeah the advantage of these is you could just swap out the board to change the game (or sometimes even a slot on the board) so you could quickly flood an arcade with the latest game then swap it out for either newer or older games after a couple of months when demand has trailed off without having to change any artwork.

What I love about candy cabs it's the universal aspect of them. They were never 1 cab dedicated to one game. Once the art of that game is on the wood cab it's that game cab only.

This probably seems remedial to long time arcade enthusiasts, but I just played a candy cade for the first time a few weeks ago. It was at a sweet barcade called LeaderBoard in Orange Park Florida. For me, it was cool just seeing / playing the thing I've always heard about since 90s gaming magazines.

Very cool! I think they're very practical and have a lot of applications. It's a shame they didn't adopt the idea or concept here in the US much. Although we might not have the unique designs and cabinet artwork we do, had they been popular, but I suppose that's speculation. Anyhow, thanks so much for watching!

Americans love Candy Cabs. Not only are they currently going for a premium ($2000+ depending on which Candy), they get bought up pretty fast when available. Fun fact though, I actually do have a wooden candy cab, its called the Neo Geo SCB-U4. Apparently pretty rare.

Contrary opinion: These cabinets aren't popular with businesses that would probably buy arcade machines in general which is why you don't see them around here in the US. If you have that kind of sit down space, a business is more likely to put in some casino machine instead. I love these cabinets myself, but I also think they don't make sense in many American commercial environments where standup works better for multiple reasons.

If I were to guess, it was probably American arcade owners who didn't want the candy cabs, because it would allow patrons to sit down. I think our arcades were probably more of a volume business, using the spectacle of having the machines to get as many people in to drop a few quarters into each machine. I don't know a ton about the japanese arcade culture, but it always seemed like they had more arcades, and often one company like snk or sega would own its own place, so maybe it was more beneficial for them to bring someone in, make them comfortable, and empty a bunch of coins into a machine in one sitting, kind of like a casino. Again, I'm not a great source, this is mostly a guess, but it might be worth looking into.

I like how they have its own theme and it's metal/plastic so it would last. I don't feel the same nostalgic feeling, but I really like them, but I would say the only thing I don't like about them are the cp areas are kind of small compared to some USA cabinets. I dig them, I played on most of the popular ones, they're rad!

I put together my own arcade kiosk with dual sticks, six buttons, trackball, and a front extension for wheel and peddles. Donkey Kong marquee on the top of it since it’s the most nostalgic for my childhood. Of course I built it for sitting. These arcades are actually preferable in my case. They could be a problem for taller people. Some of these people were sitting like Larry King to look at the screen.

I’ve been to Japan a few times and loved heading out after work each night and seeing arcades with candy cabs wall to wall. Sometimes they were all loaded with the current hottest game, so I assumed the arcade owners bought like a rolling license? There was also some connection with gaming and gambling. I would get bombarded heading in and having every employee hand me a slip of paper “this is not a gambling place, etc..” Meanwhile you could see Japanese players trading in pachinko balls for yen.

Ralph, the candy’s presence were bigger at sfge than last year. They are in fact 29”. JP/EU measure tubes by tube size (29” or 68cm hence tubes are “A68xxx) whereas USA measures tubes by viewable screen (27”). Look at a 19” k7000 and a Sanyo “20”-ez. Both are 48cm tubes. IMO candy cabs are the highest quality machine to play on and 95% of all games come from Japan meant and designed for these machines. Sitdown style began with space invaders back in 78-79 on cocktail cabs. It’s always been sit down over there.

It really bums me out that I can't see the Vewlix or Delta types in any modern arcade except the Rount 1. Most of the enthusiast market is hooked onto collecting and restoring older boxy cabinets and EXA-Arcadia is still doing it. If you go google or something on arcade cabs, you'll often see that there's people who develope the flat panel sit downs and ones like to Injustice were fairly popular. Still my idea would be a conversion from vewlix to a showcase type that supports tate switching and panel for up to 6 players. Just think Shredders Revenge AND X-Men!

I adore candy cabs, especially the Astro city and blast city. In the 90s my local arcade had more redemption style games, racing games and skeeball/basketball more than anything else. I’m not even sure we had a NeoGeo. My memories of arcade games were basically mortal kombat, Pac-Man, 1942, and galaga. I did play tons of home ports of arcade games though. So now that I want a real arcade machine at home, I want something different and interchangeable for many games I missed out on. I’m seriously considering buying one in the near future if possible. I know it’ll be a ton of work to clean and cost a fortune to get one, but something about them is alluring to me.

The three main issues candy cabs have is that they are all white with rainbow colors on the controls. It makes them look like toys. in the West we like more adult themed machines. The Vewlix solved that issue since they come with a more sophisticated look that makes them feel more adult. The second one is that they are clearly made for multiple games. in the West people like the idea of having dedicated cabs that are unique and have their own personality for each separate game. The third one is the one you mentioned, which is that they are made of metal and plastic, so not being made of wood makes it harder to produce considering the West is very limited in their resources to produce these type of goods without them being too expensive for the average buyer. Personally I love the Vewlix, to me they are perfection and I know I would love a Sega Net City if it came in black for example with grey buttons or LED buttons. The Egret ones , Blast Ciy, Astro City, Limbergh all look cool in my opinion but that's only because I love Japanese games. If someone is more used to playing Mortal Kombat or killer Instinct maybe a Capcom Mini Cute won't do it, so you have to understand that.

I wish the states were more open to these kind of cabinets. Not only are the Sanwa/seimitsu buttons and balltop sticks more accessible and intuitive, the cabinets are less claustrophobic and it’s more comfortable to sit down compared to having to stand up while you’re trying to clear a stage. The pizza joint closest to me has one that runs Super Street Fighter 2, and it’s still a blast every time.

I wish SEGA came out with a Bartop version of the Astro City Mini with a 19inch screen.

Na, they can keep them all in Japan as far as I'm concerned. A super tall US-style cab is where it's at, marquee visible from 50 feet away. Crowd gather round while someone finishes up a lifetime best on whatever game. Classic.

I have an irrational hate for candy cabs unfortunately. Back when I first saw them it was the Dreamcast era and I thought they were just pirated Dreamcast machines because they only played games that were out on the Dreamcast. Also because they just looked like a TV stuffed into a generic plactic shell with a stick and buttons. It was also the time when arcades were dieing off and I felt like these "pirate" machines were helping to kill off the industry. Thanks to the internet I now know that they were probably filled with legit NAOMI boards but the feelings still linger 🙂.

I think they are nice systems but just don't rub my nostalgia bone like a standard cab...but if I found the right deal on one I would be all over it

I can understand that, I don’t have nostalgia for them either. I think they’re cool though but I don’t have any attachment to them really.

I got an OK Baby cab, which is a Taiwanese candy cab. They have a lot of them in Taiwan. I bought mine thru a local arcade distributor. Its not quite as heavy as a wooden cab especially a standup one, but still sturdy enough for very heated Street Fighter play. my kids (almost 50 lbs each) climb on the glass and on top of the whole thing all the time.

They’re pretty neat and super versatile machines, if you end up getting one, check back and let Me know. Good luck on your search 👀👍🏻. Thanks so much for watching!

In the past I have owned taito egret, egret 2 and 2 atomiswave candy cabs. They are awesome, huge screens and super easy to swap PCBs in and out. I don’t see any home arcade companies making them in the future tho because people in the US have no nostalgia for them.

I would love a candy cab, but there's something nostalgic about the old US stand up cabs. But candy cabs are so compact and would work well in the home.

I'd like to play one just because of the larger screen, but I prefer the older cabinets when they were all unique. The older and crappier the game, the cooler the cabinet was. 70s arcade machines are nuts!
