I decided to make a short experimental video sharing some thoughts for people that are having a hard time finding a reason to allocate time for art due to not finding value in it. Speaking of art, while I have quite a few language learning videos lined up in the works, I'm also considering sharing my art progress from nothing to something. Anyway, thanks for watching!

"Art is not optional." - John Green, The Anthropocene Reviewed As an artist (who's been drawing semi seriously for the past 5 years), let me tell you: people do art for many, many different reasons, and all of them are valid. Sometimes those reasons will change over time. When I was really young, I did art because I was expected to - my mother is an artist, she sent me to summer art workshops, I was the "art kid" in school, etc. - and that led me to fall away from drawing for a while. Around five years ago, I picked up drawing again because I wanted to draw my favorite characters. Eventually I started learning more because I wanted to draw my own characters. Nowadays, I'm still drawing; sometimes it's to raise my voice for an issue I'm passionate about, sometimes it's to educate, sometimes it's to express. And all of these reasons are valid reasons to make art. So, whatever reason you (the reader) make art for (or want to make art for), do it! What matters most is that you enjoy doing it :) Unrelated, but I'm so glad KZfaq recommended me your channel!! Your videos are an amalgamation of my interests (art, learning languages, and Minecraft lol) and I think it's so cool :D

You and me both! The struggle of art, and doing something that has no "value" is tough. A lot of the things you describe are some things I have been thinking about for years. And it has just lead to dread. For some reason I can justify the idea of learning a new skill (language for an example) but just creating to create was a struggle. I tried to draw for years, but seeing how bad the idea in my head came out on paper always made me not want to do it. But I have now found a creative outlet in writing.

I was wondering how relatable this video will be for people, so thanks for sharing! And I can definitely understand that, drawing can be incredibly frustrating in the sense that it requires a massive prerequisite of "knowing how to draw" before you can truly unlock the creative freedom which drawing allows. I'm still struggling with this myself too. Glad you found the outlet through writing though! Creative writing is also something I'm thinking of dabbling with in the future.

As a high school student pursuing a music major, I was constantly thinking about pieces I should play or things I should compose that would be good for my music portfolio. But now, I'm more motivated to just put my effort towards something I actually want to do. Very eye-opening video, I'm sure if you keep up this great quality and effort, your channel will blow up soon!

I quit art about a year ago because I was frustrated on not being satisfied with how my drawings looked like. However, at that time, I think I forgot why I started doing art in the first place. Now, I'm back at the start, and I hope I'll have the mentality to go on with this journey. Thank you for the tips, as always! :)

Thank you for all your videos so far, I discovered your channel this morning and I had to watch all your videos in one go. I really like your format and content ! Drawing is an awesome skill but it's such a long journey to get at a satisfying level. I left my job 1 years ago to dedicate my self to drawing and I can finally draw the way I wanted. Now I will go back to software engineering but the journey was definitively worthwhile. Drawing is lot like langage acquisition, for a long time you are struggling and it's pretty much useless but after a tipping point you start to really enjoy it. For language the tipping point for me was 95% comprehension after that I just exposed my self to more and more content. And for drawing the tipping point was mastering the fundamentals, perspective, light, color and anatomy, after that you can do a LOT of things. Thank again for you video and I would love to see one of your video on drawing one day ;)

very glad I came across this video, I struggle a lot with allowing myself to create something. I write music, and while it's very satisfying to finish, there's always the thought that I could better spend my time elsewhere. I could do something practical like study, or browse the internet and get more serotonin. To me, art always has the undercurrent of competition, no matter how hard you try to ignore it. Some days its hard for me to listen to music because I'm ashamed of where my writing level is at, all while simultaneously not wanting to spend the time to improve. I guess that's something to work on.

I think that art and pursuing any skill with purpose and intent is inherently beneficial to society because it benefits you. A more content you is a more productive you, and the "time wasted" on the skill / art you pursue will build not only your skills and motivation, but lead you to apply what you learned in ways you'd never have thought of otherwise. That's my 2 cents on this topic.

Awesome video! To be honest if you are a person who worries about "wasting" time with art just remember that you are also "wasting" time when you are doing things like watching a movie or playing a game etc. Personally I'd argue that most things that make you happy are not a waste of time. What is the point in life if all you are doing is worrying about maximizing productivity and financial game. If you have the freedom to do things just for the fun of it, do it. You ve got only this one life to live so your time is way to valuable to waste on things you don't like.

I started playing guitar 17 years ago just for fun and I've been improving my skill quite slowly throughout these years. I am mediocre at best, but I'm happy. A serious motivated person could surpass me in only 4 years. However I prioritized having fun while many of the motivated people quit, because they stopped having fun and I find that sad.

I started making props from games, ts shows and anime and at the beginning, I often thought about "why do I make for example bat (lucille from wakling dead) when It does not have use. Instead, I could do ext... However, I kept making things I just thought it would be cool to make, nothing else. Even though I made a couple of small projects, all of them felt amazing during process and want to make more. And like you said, it's not that they don't have value. You might just think at the beginning they don't. But the value often appears in something you did not expect. Even when friends just say " Hey that's an awesome dude" it's a great feeling and its better than be stuck in your own thoughts doing nothing. Not only that you will learn new skills which will come in handy in many other areas. If you continue and like what you do, more like-minded people or people who find cool what you do will notice you and support you. Just keep making art if it's something that makes you at least a tiny bit happier than a boring job. We live in a digital age where people can express themselves like never before and there are hundreds of channels, pages or other social accounts that prove that even art on it's own after enough dedication will be worth it in the end.

I don't think I've ever connected with a youtuber as much as you. I am also learning japanese though I am very early into my journey (barely a month in) and I've learned to draw on and off for the past year using the same resource you've shown. I'm also planning to learn to code. But then I think, are all these things I'm learning even worth it? None of these things even pertain to my college major or even the job I plan to get. I've managed to resolve this issue by thinking "Fuck it, I don't give a shit if what I'm doing is useless, I just want to be a better person" Which is a huge thing for me because I'm a serial procrastinator. Looking at your channel is almost looking at a future version of myself. Which is surreal to say, but also quite scary as looking at your channel also gives me an almost tangible future that could just as easily be non-existent. Funnily enough, I plan to be a youtuber also, so I guess that's another link. Good luck on your endeavors, Livakivi.

Trust me I have no reason for learning Spanish (specifically Latin American Spanish but I do make some notes with some words that are different compared to southern American Spanish since Spanish in Mexico is slightly different to Spain Spanish. Kinda like Brazilian Portuguese and Portugal Portuguese) Sure you could say that some of my family members are fluent in Spanish (which is true btw since my mom’s sister speaks Spanish and my older cousin is learning Spanish. She speaks somewhat fluently but still working on it) but I don’t have a actual reason why I am. Maybe I’m just bored?

I essentially don’t have any hobbies because I find it hard to create something impractical. There is also a weird thing where if I’m not good at something to begin with then I don’t feel compelled to improve because it must not be meant to be or something. I’m kind of jealous of people’s passion for honed in interests and the sense of accomplishment they get out of it. That being said it feels more like I admire the aesthetic of having something to be passionate about and I’m not worse off or in desperate need for a hobby.

_"Learning a language just because you like it is a good enough reason…" If you had friends who were 65 or 75 years old, looking back at their lives, with some experience of personal tragedy and regret, perhaps they'd change your point of view --not that you'd discard your perspective entirely, but that it would (in some sense) change.
@Livakivi
@Livakivi 3 жыл бұрын
I assume you're talking about people regretting "just having fun" instead of doing something more productive or fulfilling with their lives? In that case, I am very aware of the value of every second that passes, and the importance of choosing every action very carefully for it to be as valuable as possible. By "valuable", I don't even mean valuable to you personally, but rather to the world. In fact, the following part in the video hints that you have to sacrifice your own personal experience entirely if you want to have the highest possible impact in the world. While this sort of a mindset can be really fulfilling, when you're not entirely logically consistent within it, actions which lead to questionable practicality such as art or language learning will cause a high level of dissonance, which is something I struggle with myself to some extent. That's the one of the reasons behind why I made this video in the first place.

By things having a “practical” value, you have to define practical. Practical can mean making money. And if you’re trying to make money, then art is largely a waste of time. But if we think abt it differently, we consume media, tv shows, books, mangas, animes, and all of these came about through art. These arw mediums of art and we go home from our work and come home to these things. Why? There is no meaning to watching an anime or show, it doesn’t make any money, its not “practical”. Yet even the most money oriented person or rather “practical” person will go and have some kind of thing he or she enjoys to do or watch. Now practical can mean adding value to another, and in that case art has an immeasurable practical value. Reason it is immeasurable is because, you don’t know how what you do affected another person internally that later translated into their behavior externally. Its not too different from love where its practical value isn’t apparent until years down the line. We earn money so that we have spouse we love. We earn money so that we have kids we love. Earning money for love has no “practical” or money making value. But it has the greatest practical value or value to others in an immeasurable way. We don’t know how raising our kids with love affects them. We would have to raise a separate set of kids without them to know that. Idk just my thoughts lol.

I have some videos planned in the future for that! But right now, I don't focus on speaking or output at all, I primarily focus on getting enough input in order to become as familiar as possible with the language, which will improve my speaking abilities as well. If you'd like to know more about why, check this video out by Matt: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7WlgMl92bGXpIk.html

Humans simply enjoy art. May it be paintings, music, poems, women, a sunset, landscapes,... Humans are designed to see the beauty in things. I believe that art is one of the only things that matter in life. There`s no real reason we`re alive anyways, and if art makes living enjoyable, then screw it, let`s all do more art!!

Not to get political but I feel like American society (and perhaps Capitalistic societies in general) beat the message of "Only skills with utility matter" into our heads
