Matt travels to Jonesboro, AR to give a presentation with Dr. Tyson Raper of UT Extension on his experience testing various popular biological products in his row crop system over the last several year. Matt will answer the question, do current biological products make farmers a profit or help with soil health?

Farmers need to hear more common sense straight talk like this instead of all the sales pitches that get shoved down our throats. Good job Matt!!

You were doing a great job explaining this to an novice You’re very good speaker must be in your natural habitat bacteria

"... Even dug up soil from the woods and put strips down with the manure spreader" that is a perfect test idea. You're on the same path I'm testing, "perfect soil" from decomposed hardwood leaves in a tea with Microrhyzal fungus and molasses dribbled in the trench ahead of the seeds.

Matt, if you are having a problem with plant uptake of potash, try potassium acetat sprayed on growing crop. research out of Michigan State on it

I think how much insecticide and fungicide A farmer sprays has a lot to do with Soil health.

Good presentation. One thought… Fungicides are nonselective. I struggle yield vs soil health. We apply fungicide to wheat for head scab every year and some soybeans that have a good yield potential. But I try to limit it as much as possible it’s hard to do with most seed treatments having a fungicide in them. Thank you for taking time to do these trials.

I believe foliar fungicides are far less harmful to soil fungi than seed treatments are. I avoid fungicide seed treatment whenever possible however in several crops it’s almost impossible to get without treatment. Foliar fungicides will not translocate down through the roots

Fungicides are selective, and seed treatments are a much lower use rate just on the seed, not broadcasted, contacting a very small portion of the soil. Just clarification, not good or bad.

Have you tried using compost? Especially compost made from wood and yard waste. It may be high in fungi. Lot of municipalities are composting their yard waste now. I heavily use compost from made from food and wood waste. Ive produced some very nice crops on high rates of compost but takes a lot of fuel and time to haul and apply high rates. That and odor can be an issue. Just be cautious of compost made from biosolds

That was an interesting talk. I did learn a little about biologicals that is something I have not tried yet, and really don’t think I will until they’re becomes more compelling evidence that it is effective. I do try to try some new things on my farm every year last year was fungicide on beans this year is sulfur in my starter mix for corn. I do think it is important to try things. Good talk you look comfortable up there.

I hope your starter is applied 2x2. Sulfur in furrow is absolutely not an acceptable practice.

Good presentation, I am concerned about the basic grasp on agronomy knowledge related to soil chemistry though. It’s pretty simple to understand why 50lbs of potash doesn’t equate to 25ppm K. Potash is 60% K2O, and is only 50% K. So 50lbs of potash is 25lbs of K. Soil levels are displayed in parts per million, per acre there is 2 million lbs of soil. So you have applied 25lbs of K on 2 million lbs of soil, you must divide by 2 to get ppm. 50lbs if potash is 12.5ppm. This is BASIC.

You seriously giving me a lecture on soil chemistry? It was a joke for the audience… Yes I understand what percentage of potash is potassium. I know how many pounds of soil are in a 6” slice. Regardless, applied nutrients will never raise soil test amounts by a corresponding number, whether trying to raise ppm in the soil or base saturation. I most definitely have more than a BASIC understanding of soil chemistry.

Fungi is key you want a 1 to 1 ratio for productive row crops. Herbicides can kill fungi.

I've often wondered if the herbicides we use have anything to do with the bacteria and fungi ratio? Do they feed the bacteria population in the break down proces? I don't know how you would prove it and we still got to control the weeds. Just something I've thought about.

They most definitely affect the soil biology. But to what degree positively or negatively, I have no idea
