Unless they seriously incentivize moms staying at home and husbands sustaining their whole family on 1 income, nobody is going to have more kids.

@daydream It's neither mandatory nor a maximum. They just give a subsidy to whoever has 3 kids and a fine to whoever has more than that.

@daydream In the previous 1 child policy there were many cases of coercion, forced abortions, sterilization, etc. The concern expressed in this video is more about pressure from the couple's parents in the case where 2 girls have been born but couple's parents still want a son to "carry on the family name", a traditional concern in Chinese culture, pressuring them to have a 3rd child. See question 6 at 11:59.

I want to share a story from a friend of mine from when I was attending Texas Christian University: We had a Government & History course together in 2015, so when the Chinese Communist Party ended the 1 Child Policy, she shared what it was like for her. She was from China & born in the early 1990s, but because of this her family was permitted to have 2nd child & 10 years later her sister was born. She told me how growing up there was some issues being a girl with so many boys around in a country that desired sons, as well as the issue of being so much older than her sister. Finally, she said she enjoyed hearing stories from American classmates who grew up with multiple siblings as if it was no big deal. From an outsider's perspective, it's obvious thay China having this 1 Child Policy as the norm for over 20 years has finally resulted in a declining population. Furthermore, because this policy has been ingrained in many Chinese citizens suddenly ending it & trying to encourage couples to have multiple children will be economic burden for many. Furthermore, in some parts of China the male to female ratio is over 4 to 1 so having a new generation of young couples solve this population problem will be difficult.

Oh yeah. She's an excellent specimen, a proof among coins. As she spoke about babies I couldn't help but imagine some for us, and probably the process of creating the babies as well. Her wisdom and external beauty is a super saiyan combo. Quite the gem; hope a gemtleman marries her.

@@Garbaz It really isn't. Both men and women imagine what kind of life they would have together and even what offspring would look like. Have you ever read...a book? People today are incrediby dumb. I don't know what chemicals you were exposed to, but they definitely affected your brain. I don't know her and I'm playing pretend time, what if. You know what pretend time is, little guy? At 5:10 THATS WHY THE PARENTS NEED TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES IF THEY ARE ABLE BODIED AND NOT EXPECT A FREE RIDE ON THEIR KIDS BACKS. PLUS THEIR GOVT CREATED THIS PROBLEM SO THEY NEED TO HAVE PROGRAMS OUT THERE TO CARE FOR THE ELDERLY TO HELP THE KIDS OUT ESPECIALLY IF THE AGING PARENTS CANT TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES

This is great because it really showcases the issue. Ageing population, and massive gender imbalance BUT very few women want more than one child, if that. The issue is money, but also gender expectations in the family context. It's clear the role of housewife is viewed as thankless and disempowered, and full of traditional expectations. The next issue is whether the government tries to overcome the problem by upgrading gender equality in society and making it easier to be a working mother, or tries to force women back into more traditional roles. So far, they seem to be leaning more toward regressive than progressive. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

the governments biggest problem is they just dont let nature run its course, the more you interfere with nature the more it will punish you for it in the long term.The last time they had a strict policy didn't turn out so well for them. This will have the same results.

The government overwhelmingly consists of old men, so I wouldn’t expect them to be feminist champions. The disastrous implications of the one child policy may force them to act in the end though

You’ve got it completely backwards, it’s because of gender equality that countries aren’t having kids. This isn’t just a Chinese problem but one all over the world. Back in the day a man could sustain a whole household by himself. But now women aren’t restrained to just being housewives and have the freedom of perusing careers we see the imbalance. Even in first world nations that offer maternity leave and mass payed time off for having kids people are still choosing not to. Because the economy isn’t able to support even two working parents on low income pay in various countries. Also why have kids when you need money do go on holidays, buy a nice car and enjoy the life you have without being tied down, that’s an issue plaguing many 20-30 year olds. Japan is having a much harder time with it, because when young people are working all the time and not socialising it means they’re not hooking up and having kids. Until global living improves I think most will opt out of having children.

I don’t think the government cares about “forcing women back into regressive roles”. The government of course will want women to progress, to contribute to the economy. The issue does not have to do with what the government views about women, but about the cost of raising a child and income.

Actually no, the most pressing issue isn't workforce, but falling birth rate. It is a huge problem.There is minimal progress around gender issues and the current President's attitude to gender roles is very clear. You only have to look at the lack of women in higher positions in the CCP to know that. It's also clear that the cost of raising a child is supposed to be in a nuclear hetero family structure.@@asves4536

as education level increases, the demand to enjoy a better standard of living also increases, people are not willing to sacrifice their quality of life just to have more kids. This is a common problem for all developed or developing nations. Unless the nation is willing to provide huge amounts of aid, there isnt really any incentive to go for more kids. Each kid probably cost few hundred thousands or millions to raise depending on where you life and how long you plan to support them for

I teach at a university in Zhengzhou. When I discussed this with my students when it first was in the news (I have 600), not one person said they wanted 3 children. It was one, two, or zero, roughly evenly split.

It's not really normal though. We live to reproduce. People who don't want kids, or few of them, are naturally the outliers (since they don't reproduce and there's fewer of them over time as a result).

@HOPE that’s not entirely true. Most of the people in the video besides one or two said they don’t mind the gender of their babies. In the new generation we rly dc either. If we “prefer” any specific birth gender it would be due to other reasons like I want to battle my son and teach him hard skills or literally anything else

What seems strange to me is that the pain of childbirth isn't commonly heard as a reason not to have kids in the US. Not that it's pain-free, of course. But is there something different in China? Also, I've often heard it gets easier after the first child, but don't know if that's really true.

You’ll be surprised, especially if the mother of the girl had a hard pregnancy they will usually tell that story more than the easier ones. This sticks to the girl’s brain and makes her think all pregnancies are painful, since most pregnant women want a natural birth (no painkillers) and some pregnancies don’t go well in terms of pain wise.

There isn’t much practical value, what gonna happen is that some people from extremely poor areas may have 9 or 10 children (there are families like that even today), while the more educated wouldn’t even want to have one. Plus, one child policy is such a gigantic failure, the government doesn’t want to make dramatic change, for face saving.

我老家就是南昌的，随手点开这个视频看到熟悉的地方，很惊喜，就一直看了下去。受访者真的还蛮有代表性的，女生们说的怕痛啊，费钱啊，不自由啊，公婆催生但是孩子最后还是夫妻的责任啊，都是我身边还有网络上很多女性的真实想法。至于那几个男的，只能说真实且恶心。江西重男轻女的“传统”到了这个年代还是这么严重呵呵……我不希望那些重男轻女的男人得偿所愿，也不希望有哪个不幸的女孩降生到这样的家庭，那就祝他们断子绝孙，后辈不孝，家财散尽吧哈哈哈。

Quite interesting topic! I did not watch every single interview but I am surprised environmental issues never came as a matter of concerns to have children. Lacking money to raise children properly is one thing, allowing them to live on a planet where life is still enjoyable and where people are not fighting against each other for access to resources is another one (on a more global scale)...

It’s ironic that the pollution in China is so bad, while the USA, with probably the cleanest air and high standards is forced by unfair treaties to pay the price for countries like China that are designated “developing nations” when they truly (at least in China’s case) are no longer developing nations.

@@janchristian514how is China not a developing nation? China is already very developed, true, but China is nowhere done developing. The US also is nowhere near the cleanest air. The US contributes to the air pollution the second most in the world. If you look at the air pollution per capita, you will see that the US has way higher pollution than China.

@@asves4536 You are right regarding pollution, I was wrong. But all developed nations have bad statistics regarding pollution. China has terrible air pollution. But China is among the ranks of the developed nations now, and should not get favored by UN mandates. Also, China is the highest in CO2 production, not the US.
