Do Cobia taste good? Our honest opinion... (12LB LINE CATCHES BIG FISH!)

Welcome back to another video everyone! In this session we're fishing the close-in reefs off the Sunshine Coast (Mooloolaba) chasing a feed of snapper.
While we didn't find any snapper this day, we found some other delicious reef fish and had a tough battle when our Zman soft plastic got eaten by a big fish on 12lb braid! The Sunshine Coast inshore reefs are rough and gnarly, so pulling fish away from their homes can prove to be very hard at times.
Along the way we give you plenty of tips, as well as giving our opinion on the eating quality of cobia. Don't forget to comment your thoughts, opinions, and questions below!

Great vid Wil, thanks for posting another one mate, always look forward to seeing them. Can't say I've eaten a Cobia yet, mainly due to, not catching one, but I will and I'll probably just bbq it with lemon and butter in foil🤷. On a separate note, I've been learning different knots this week and what are your preferred knots for leader to braid and leader to hook. Mine are Alberto & Uni knot. 🍻👍

Thanks Flippa I appreciate it a lot mate!! I’m glad you enjoyed 👌 Hahaha that is definitely a fair enough reason for not eating one 😂 But it will happen one day! We couldn’t catch one for a long time and now all of a sudden we can’t seem to stay away from the buggers! The good thing is you get a decent amount of meat off them, so you can try it a few a different ways to try and find what suits you. Lots of people have been saying they are great eating, so you may love them! 👌 That’s good to hear you’ve been practicing some knot tying mate, it’s more important than people realise! Always sucks losing a fish or lure to knots breaking. For braid to leader I just use a double uni knot and I really trust it. I only use this up to 30lb leader though, because tying it with heavier, thicker leader makes the knot very big and bulky. For any leader heavier than 30lb I’ve started tying the dreaded FG knot, which definitely isn’t as quick or easy to tie as other knots, but it is definitely strong when done correctly. I will definitely look at the Alberto knot though and give it a test at home this week! If it’s solid and quicker to tie than the FG knot, I will start using it instead 👍 It’s always good to hear from you and have a chat mate, I hope you’re doing well and fingers crossed a cobia comes along for you soon! They know how to put up a fun fight that’s for sure 😁

Thanks heaps Cam! Yeah we couldn’t catch one for a long time, and all of a sudden it feels like they won’t leave us alone 😂 a lot of people have commented saying they are great so if you get the chance, give it a crack and see. For some reason, we haven’t been able to enjoy it like most people have 😅 Tight lines and thanks for the comment as always mate

Try honey soy and sweet chilli marinade and leave in the fridge for a couple of hours and cook on the BBQ, or pan but a little messy in the kitchen, goes pretty good

Thanks mate, marinating it actually sounds like a good idea! I’ll definitely keep that one handy in case we ever end up keeping one again in future. Would be good with other fish too I reckon! Cheers mate

Hey Will, That’s another great informative video. I haven’t eaten Cobia, so can’t comment personally. My neighbour got one just over legal size, and he loved it. I was surprised that you were using such light line and leader. I know lighter can get more bites, but we use 50lb braid and leader for bottom bashing and are still getting busted off at times. Also, just wanting to know, what weight was the jig head you were using on that soft plastic? Thanks!

G’day mate, thanks heaps for the comment and I’m glad you find the videos helpful! Yeah a lot of people have said that they absolutely love eating cobia, but the three we tried have all been average for some reason 😅 might need to find a few new recipes! In terms of using the light line - we use 20lb or 30lb mainline and leader when chasing snapper with lightly weighted baits, and this is enough to stop really big snapper most of the time. We rarely get busted off and we like to set the drag so they can run anyway, rather than going hard and pulling hooks. These 20lb set ups are usually enough when fishing our baits down near the bottom too for your basic SEQ reef species such as tuskies, grassies, maori cod, etc. But when we were getting smoked we probably should have pulled out one of our heavier setups to drop baits down to the bottom, especially since the spot we were fishing was extremely rough reef 😅 I think they were quite solid fish too. So that was just complacency on our part. If we ever head further north to chase reefies like trout, nannies, red throat, reds, etc, we’ll definitely be upping our tackle to 40 or 50lb! With the jig head weights, we try to use a 3/8th ounce in up to 35 or 40 metres, however sometimes have to go with a 1/2 ounce if it’s a bit windy or something. In deeper water like 60m plus we go up to a 5/8th or 3/4 ounce, although you want to try and go as light as possible as the snapper LOVE that plastic just wafting down through the water column. We also get plenty of hits while it’s just bouncing around in the rod holder though, a few metres up off the bottom too though. I think this fish was on a 1/2 ounce head in around 35 metres of water 👍 I hope this helps mate, sorry to throw so much information at you all at once! I appreciate the support on the channel. Tight lines! 🎣

Cobia .. try this .. I cook Cobia and Longtail the same .. cut the fillets into exact thickness steaks, very important ..cut the steaks into 120mm x 75mm x 30/40mm thick servings ....dry the steaks with paper towel..smear the steaks with Olive Oil and put aside .. get out Italian Seasoning, Garlic sprinkles .. Chilli sprinkles ..salt ..and chop up a big lot of Spring Onions. ... Dry the Oil off the fish and coat with the seasoning and put aside..you just have to experiment with how much seasoning, but start off with less not more.. ...just a smear of Olive Oil in the pan plus a tablespoon of butter ... heat the oil and butter to just before burning the butter ... in with the fish ... watch the white rise up the side of the steak .. as soon as it is up 6 mm, turn the steaks... watch the white rise up the other side of the steaks and chuck in the Spring Onions ... watch ... watch .. as soon as the whites almost meet ...off the stove and onto the plate .. [do NOT let the 2 whites meet].. drizzle the Oil/butter/Spring Onion brew over the fish and ... I am not a cook, but once you get into this rythm it is super fast from fridge to plate. I read somewhere that there is no bad fish .. just bad cooks ... chuckle.. we eat this for Smoko with nice toast and coffee. Truth is we dont fish for Cobia.. but getting one on the way home trolling, with stuff-all in the Box ...bewdy !!

Thanks for the great comment with an awesome recipe! Sounds good, I just noted this one down in case we ever keep a cobia again, I’ll give it a try. Would be good for other fish too 👍 Yeah they’re definitely a great fish to catch and have plenty of meat on them, especially if you haven’t got much else in the esky! Cheers mate and tight lines 🎣

Great video mate and yes you are right, Cobia tastes worse then spangled emperor. Can be ok when in fish cakes and the flavour and texture is drowned out by other ingredients. Fun to catch though!

Hahaha this comment gave me a laugh mate 😂 but yes from our experience I’d have to agree, it has been barely edible - not a good flavour at all in my opinion. The majority of people have said that it’s great though, so I don’t know if cooking it a different way would help or not. It didn’t seem to make a difference for us, and trust me we tried 😂 Definitely fun to catch mate!! And they release well too

Personal I've never caught a cobia will but one of my mates did and we cut it into cutlets and did it on the BBQ with garlic and other spices and it was quite good. But there certainly not snapper or or whiting if you know what I mean 👍

G’day mate, thanks for the comment! 🙌 That sounds awesome, I’m glad you enjoyed it! After reading a few comments it definitely sounds like you need some other ingredients or a marinade to add some flavours to it when it’s cooked. The fillets look so nice when you take them off the fish! They definitely aren’t snapper or whiting hey, those two species are hard to beat 🤤 Tight lines and thanks again mate! 👍

@willkitching

@@ryanjefferson5356 Yeah that could be it too hey! I know with kingfish it’s the same - they reckon some are awesome eating, and others are absolutely terrible if they carry some sort of invisible parasite in their flesh. It turns them to mush. It’s just weird that I’ve tried 3 now, different sizes, and they’ve been the same. I was really hoping they’d prove me wrong too! 😅😅 But hey as long as you enjoy them mate that’s the main thing hey. Maybe they are just better cooked/eaten a certain way too, who knows! 👌
