For DJing you need 2 Things. 1. Basic Skills: like Beatmatching (playing Songs together so the beats don't clash) and Phrasing (Know which parts of a Song match and how long they are) Modern Players can automate Beatmatching by using Sync (BPM will be matched and Quantize will put the Beats on top of each other) and can help you finding the Phrases by showing the wave-form, colors and time indicators 2. Song selection this is Key (you need to give the crowd what they want) Sure you can play the Top100 Charts but most of the time they don't really match perfectly. Everything else is the icing on the cake. If you master both normal people would not notice (and don't care about) any mistakes in transitions.
@dsquareddan
@dsquareddan 3 жыл бұрын
Also mixing in key is very important. You can nail steps 1 & 2 like you’ve laid out, but if the tracks are not compatible keys it will sound awful

@@dsquareddan what does mixing in key means?
@dsquareddan
@dsquareddan 3 жыл бұрын
@@aanallein5922 music theory. Not every song blends nicely with another because they are written in different keys. When you mix harmonically in key it sounds pleasant to the ears. When you don’t mix in key it can sound jarring and wrong, even if the songs are perfectly beat matched
@warker_de
@warker_de 3 жыл бұрын
@@dsquareddan Yeah mixing in Key is good but you should not totally stick to it. Detecting the Key of a song is no perfect science. I often encounter different Results in different programs. You should take it as another hint but if you say 2 songs with a huge Key diff match then it's ok.

TL;DW - yes. You basically press play, look for the next song, find the match BPM (usually automagically if you're using software and not vinyl), then you find the best place to transition to next song, then you make the transition. Not really making music.

I think this is short selling DJ's a little bit. Dj'ing can be pretty simple in some cases but not as easy as you've just made out. - The tracks need to be prepared beforehand and this can be easy (if you want to just cue in build ups and outros) but can be a bit more difficult if you need to chop and change the structure of the track for a particular blend. Waiting till the intro and outro to do every mix will be seriosuly boring for the audience (and you). - You also need to know how to mix while changing tempos. Its not a good idea to have an entire set stuck in the same BPM. - If you want to sound even semi professional, you will also need to learn how to mix in key. Music is art and is open to interoperation. So you can mix how you like. However there is simply no way you're going to blend a song in 12B (E Major) to 6B (B flat major) and have it sound nice without seriously messing with the EQ's and FX . - Song selection is also massively important. You need to keep a flow and the audience entertained. This will vary depending who the target audience is. - I also think its almost wrong to compare big 'DJ's' to club DJs because the big 'DJ's' are actually producers and the live set is just so the crowd can experience that connection with their music. These are normally well planned and orchestrated sets (sometimes it is just pressing play) but thats just because lighting, fireworks etc needs to be timed with the music.
@soundsokok
@soundsokok 3 жыл бұрын
You can transition a E major song with a B flat major song , it's just a mtter of selecting the right pivot note / chord . In this case, A and D# are common note between both scales
@Liam-qm9uo
@Liam-qm9uo 3 жыл бұрын
@@soundsokok Yep you can absolutely do that if you know the songs very well and they have similar pivot notes/chords. But my point was that you just can't randomly select any two songs, match the tempos and just fade them in for a smooth blend. You have to really prepare your music and understand the key helps this transition. I think its a little disingenuous to use a drum beat sample and just mix it with a song and say yep, that all DJs do.

Many skills now like DJing & music production are being integrated with AI which makes the whole process easier than before, this in a way degrades the art and the new generation are more and more using these tools and we are forgetting about the origins of the true art form where you practise for hours and hours. Put this together with the fact that we are all connected now thru Internet makes everything we do relative to someone else so now the is no such thing as being the best in your area as u can always compare yourself to others. The old school DJs will appreciate the art and perhaps the club goers who remember the good old days where the DJ would load up a vinyl on the decks.

People don't really care about real DJs because there are guys out there that just have a laptop computer playing one song to the next like Spotify. As a mobile DJ they are getting big dollars for this. Now you do have to have a understanding of different styles of music and know how to read that crowd. If you understand that you will be successful in this business. I started in 1983 and have seen it changed dramatically. Next up is AI
@dsquareddan
@dsquareddan 3 жыл бұрын
You are 100% wrong in that it’s “not possible” to play a set with lighting & fireworks not synced. Everyone at Tomorrowland uses ShowKontrol to read CDJ info at FOH. This allows the VJ’s, LD’s & SFX to see which track is coming up next, and to load their cue’s or sync the visuals to a deck with SMPTE. This really shows your lack of understanding on how things really work. Yes, there are some who do play a fully scripted set. But it IS possible to play a set from start to end with no indication how it’s going to go and for crew at FOH to play in sync to music. You’re talking about production crew who have done this for years. As easy as it is for you to beat match a song, they can press a button to launch fireworks on the beat. It’s not *that* difficult to play lights or visuals in time to music, and with tools like ShowKontrol available, it’s even easier and automatic than ever before

@@TonyMacaroni69_ lol. get used to it in production industry. FOH = Front of House, where the audio, lighting & visuals team is mixing the show. VJ = visuals, LD = lighting, SFX = special FX (pyro,cryo,fireworks,confetti). SMPTE is a time code signal used to sync multiple pieces of gear to an audio track. So when you play a song the lyrics show up on screen in time for example

I think that the scratch part is really treaky and involves a lot of skill and repetitions, Aside from that I think that mixing using EQ's which may sound simple can also require a lot of skills if you want to mix it so good, so people that doesnt know the records wouldn't even notice the transition. And I personally think that the best way to do it is with EQ's, or making a transition to the rest part of the song

As you pointed out, anyone can learn the technical skills in a few hours. And yes, the majority of Dj's just press play and then pretend to adjust things throughout the songs by randomly touching knobs and buttons on the mixer.
